  • it'd be awesome if you posted a lesson video. youtube doesnt have one yet but a lot of people are searching, myself included, for it. you are the best cover i've seen

  • honestly my favourite cover of this song... you're incredible

  • as a big DYLAN fan i must say that ther is no one on you tube that even comes close to the brilliant guitar playing of BOB DYAN than you show here. GREAT JOB!!!

  • This is fucking awsome.

  • such a good cover!!

  • Hey! Nice!! And thanks so much for positioning for the camera so we can see both hands on the guitar. I am really struggling with that fourth finger for the G and the C (alt) chords. My teacher tabbed out a picking pattern for me. I'm making progress with it. I'm curious what you are using for a picking pattern. Any tips on controlling and strengthening that fourth finger? 2 years of playing without it, but it is a skill I want to learn. My high E string is plinking and my hand is cramping.

  • Dude...that's awesome! Thank you for being one of the few people to cover Dylan THAT SHOULD COVER DYLAN!! Man more covers please!

  • Love this song. Great cover! With all respect to Mr Dylan, I think your cover is better than the original. Strong, clear, confident picking. Perfect tempo. Your notes ring. I think your Scottish voice is a perfect accompaniment as well.

I'm trying to learn that style of finger picking. If I could play it a quarter as good as you do I'd be happy.

    Great stuff!

  • Jonn,

Better than Dylan! Guitar too loud though! Overpowers your voice. Great job. I'd buy it if you have it on a CD.

  • Excellent job young man.

  • very VERY well done sir!

  • fantastic!

  • superb! slowly trying to learn this song... practice makes perfect i guess!

  • man i am listening to dylan

  • man i am listening to dylan.

  • Hey man, love your cover (as one of the few on youtube) what chords do you use? and am i right that this is travis picking?

  • you know if there is a tutorial for the finger picking?

    niiiice song man!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would like to know which key your harp is?

  • Superb cover! I agree with "Deudeditus", this one is better with this kind of subdued emotion. Thanks for sharing.

  • Respect my friend, after searching for a good cover you're one of the first who stayed true to the finger picking, rock on!

  • Really like it!

  • I appreciate this very much so.

  • THANKS.REALLY USEFUL FOR LEARNING THIS BEAUTIFUL TUNE

  • Thank you for making this old Dylan fan really happy Jonn! Excelent playing, great voice...

And btw. thank's for the inspiration...! I play this one occasionally, but now I got a couple of new ideas and things to check out...

Got to grab my good old Martin when I can get away from work in a few hours!

    Thanks again!

  • EXCELLENT!

please oh please...could you break down your right-hand pattern please? or play it half-speed for one minute? Thanks!!!

  • any chance you can teach me how to play this song? :)

  • nicely done, bro. i usually hate covers of this song. they tend to be overly dramatic, which of course kills the lyrics. this one is good, though.

  • Excellent!

  • Most faithful cover version i have heard and seen. Thanks for sharing this ... what a beautiful timeless song it is!

  • Could you please tell me the chords for this song? Much appreciated :)

    Michelle

  • awesome

  • excellent

  • John, this video is so great!!!

Your play is very close to Dylan's variant.

    GREAT RESPECT from Russia!!!

  • Do you know any Davy Graham Songs? One of the most important people in the folk scene back in London 1960's.

  • Man!! Good cover!!

  • Hello Jonn-what's the picking pattern on the G chord? (low E )= 1 (high E)=6......Thanks for the help

  • This is great man!

  • just wanted to say sry i accidently hit 2 stars you deserve 5

  • awesome mate

  • You know, I Love to listen to You. I like what you said about your harp selection...nothing fancy...just good

  • top class. was playing you at work last night and today tried to track you down under john dalton. learnt a lot about physics and chemistry. keep up the great work JONN

  • hey! that interplay was inventive! A problem with this song generally is the similarity with the other one. I often get confused right in the middle of it, asking myself, which one am I actually playing? But herhaps you have better memory? :)

  • Hey man what kind of harmonica is that? I think I might have the same one.. You're great at fingerpicking man, really good.

  • Thanks irishprideyank,

It's a Hohner Pro Harp. I don't think that there is much difference in sound between the Hohner "Blues Harp" style harmonicas. I just take what Charlie, at Glasgows' South Side Music, has in stock at the time.

    Cheers,

    Jonn

  • That is unbelievable.

  • Glad you enjoyed it martyd871.

  • absolutely wonderful. I've seen quite a few covers of this song on youtube now, since i've been searching for a video that i can use to teach myself to play it, and i have to say this one is by far my favorite. thanks for posting this!

  • Thanks equality53000.

Make sure you post a video once you've learned it.

    Cheers,

    Jonn

  • Hi man! i hope you'r still active!

I was just wondering what are the chords you use? and what is the best way to grab them at that.

Lol asking your advice cause i like your cover! great job, good song.

  • Cheers BeastF00D,

You could find the chords in any web search.

See the notes below about how to play the verse. Best grabbed with the little finger of your right hand firmly anchored to the soundboard in my opinion. Others might disagree.

    Cheers,

    Jonn.

  • fantastic

  • Cheers luigicerro.

  • Nice one John. What's the chord shape you start the verse with, ie when you sing "sailing" ?

  • Cheers KingofRoath.

You can make it simpler if you like, by leaving the A string open and not using it. I like to alternate the bass strings E D A D because I think it sounds better, but I don't think it makes a lot of differance

    Hope this helps.

    Jonn.

  • Thanks Jonn, I've been playing this song for years, and never worked that out!

    Liam

  • Botas de cuero español, excelente.

  • Gracias hombre.

  • This was really lovely. Thanks for posting it.

  • Glad you liked it onlyc0nnect. One of my favourite Bob Dylan songs. Just the same, I've spared you a good few verses.

    Jonn

  • You are so talented and so lucky to be able to perform these masterpieces from possibly the greatest Dylan album ever. Thanks for sharing that with us.

  • Cheers GREATMUSICLIVESON.

It is a great album. People will argue with you for a week about whether it is Dylan's best or not though.

  • I enjoyed this, a lot.

  • Cheers littledroogie

  • Where did you find the tabs for this?

  • Sorry smartalex but it was a mixture of listening and making the rest up.

I'll maybe try to put down what I play soon.
