There are some very simple Linux distributions, e.g., Ubuntu-based distros. The same people who prefer Windows for its "out of the box" value probably also pay for antivirus software and use IE because they're afraid of messing up their computer by downloading another browser. The one and only advantage Windows has in my opinion is in the area of compatibility--and WINE takes care of most of those issues.
@ElasticGiraffe Thats true but windows has the better Drivers if you look on that performancewise. If Linux would have better Drivers i would Use it only
Windows is best for Gamers. Mac is for Hipsters and/or ppl that don't really know how to use computers and want an extremely easy to use system. Linux is for computer guys.
@martenLij Its hip to use Mac OS X. Its not hip to use Linux. People that use Linux are often thought of as geeks. I am a Linux user. I am using Mint on this computer. My girl just asked me, "Is Ubuntu also Linux? cause I thought it was called Mint". I had to explain to her about distros. Most ppl don't know anything about Linux n dn't really want 2. I had one dude ask me how much Linux cost. Most ppl don't know nothing about Linux. Its not the cool thing to do. That hat belongs to Mac.
i remember using mepis (debian based) when i was a pc noob. I really liked the desktop and all the editing programs like gimp. I would like everyone's input on the newest best linux os (i know there are allot of them.) I use a high end gaming pc so my only limitations are that it cant be a ppc version. I am very technical and computer savvy aswell, i do installs for a living.
I like the feeling that I don't use the same operating system that senior citizens or little kids use (Windows). I want the full customization of a Linux distro. Arch Linux FTW!
windows only works oob if it's pre-installed on a computer. otherwise it's driver hunting weekend for you. os x does, but not because it's far more superior, rather because it's fine-tuned to specific (mac) hardware. try installing it on a pc and you'll see what i mean.
from a consumer point of view, os x is the winner. from a corporate or gamer point of view, windows is the winner. and from a diy point of view, linux is the winner.
that said, i use linux, and i tend to like unix-based os's.
In many ways I think Windows is more stable. I've had Linux freezes but never a freeze or BSOD in Windows 7.
Plus every time I use 3D effects in the desktop I get video play freezes along with desktop freezes. I use the recommended driver and all plus my graphics card isn't even that advanced (Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE). But it still shouldnt have those problems.
Whenever I'm running Windows my desktop and video play is always smooth.
@BigBobsh2o Which distro did you use? Because I had lots of trouble with windows in terms of freezing. I had a laptop and I have no idea why but it seemed to troll me every time I booted up because windows often stuck at the boot screen. I reinstalled it several times including drivers, checked the hardware and still it just stopped booting after boot screen. Then I installed ubuntu 10.04 and it worked without crashing for 2 and a half years. Well programmes crashed sometimes but not the os.
It's really just a matter of drivers. If someone could figure out a way to organize and develop a one stop shop of device drivers then you'd see Ubuntu or OpenSuse take off as they offer freedom on a level Windows simply can't. It just seems the Linux community is so disorganized that this will never happen. People will continue to be frustrated and lets face the facts 99% of PC users would blow a headgasket if they were asked to use the command line.
I see you having a good time TRYING to be showy.
"If I want software, I program it myself" *scoffs* I ain't even gonna bother commenting on that. It's pretty self-revealing of the person's character and intentions.
@DarkShadesOfGrey I actually have only used Linux mint once, and it wasn't bad at all :) Soo many distros to choose from. Ordinarily, I have my laptop installed with windows 7, Backtrack 5 (used to be four), Ubuntu 11, and a few repair Cd's built in so I don't have to worry about carrying a repair flash drive everywhere if I get a virus. Do keep going with linux :) ultimately, I prefer distros with a reconfigured gnome to kde. Also, backtrack cracks secured wifi passwords :)
@ginito - I am truly sorry that I said something that was true which automatically made me a retard because you didn't like it. Sorry, again. /End sarcasm
@DarkShadesOfGrey I agree to that, as I know the vista I had worked well, as I maintained it. however, it's almost like linux, you have to be the kind of person who can use it. As I said, i repair a few computers, and when somebody comes to me i have a joking bet with myself that it's vista. 90% of the time it is :). I switch between windows 7 and Ubuntu 11 (cool Ubuntu, with compiz and everything :) on my laptop. And Vista faster than ubuntu? That's impressive of vista :D
You merely discussed how Windows is an easier-to-use OS compared to Linux (for the average joe). The argument discussed does not reflect the claim made in the title; the title is misleading -- define "Better".
Chris, how familiar are you with OS design? At the minimum, you should mention some specific features in Windows that is superior to Linux. Perhaps you could also talk about your background on this topic.
@PhoenixOpenProject How typical of humans to be curious about other people's abilities and background. It is the nature of the psyche - to be competitive. "Just watch the video and enjoy" You sound like you're real satisfied with his comparision. What else did he offer besides saying Windows is easier to use to claim it better? As for asking him about his background, well... I don't know what kind of videos and quasi-techtalks you've been watching but in any REAL discussion you'd hear the person mention about their experience on the topic. And how about you stop trolling?
I care too much? (about...?) What makes you think I give two shits bout you? Rather what you really should do is "fuck off and stop" being dumb, irrevelant, and inane.
@shaneuk666 that was exactly my thought. Just because someone has put windows on a computer so that it will (in theory) work right out of the box doesn't mean installing windows works ootb. Gah. ever.
On average Ubuntu Linux linux install in 20-30 minutes, maybe less depending on spec's. 8/9 - 9/10 times all drivers will be working automatically. On the other hand Windows 7 can talk an hour or more to install, again depending on spec's and most of the the time you will have to download and install drivers. So for an easyer and quicker set-up id go with linux
@BobsAwesomeCannel You're kidding. The first Mandriva 9 install I did took around 4.5 hours on my laptop (which has 2 GB DDR2 RAM dual channel and a TK-55 CPU). You put standards too high. We don't all have i7's. Fucking freak.
@0x28 I have a laptop with a AMD 300 single core 1.6ghz and 1gb ddr3 ram and it installed in under half an hour. So you just have a messed up laptop. Fucking dope :L
I agree through disagreement. I just like to listen or read about OS "wars" and such, but I don't like or want to participate in them. I use windows, it's good for what I need it for and I'm happy. I tried Linux, I didn't like, I don't use. I don't think It's worse. I just don't like it.
Linux is temperamental and high maintenance, but the lack of viruses, the fact it's free and faster makes up for this. I run Mint 11 but there are some things I need Windows for (like syncing my WP7 phone) so I run XP on a virtual drive
I like Windows because of the "it just works" factor. But that's just due to business practices of monopoly strong-arming (driver developers, Netflix, video game developers, etc), and not because of technical superiority like Linux
They are both great Operating Systems. Linux is fast and has no performance issues. It can be easy to use once it is set up. I like how Linux is free and you can share it. Windows is to expensive and you can't install in on more than one PC without more than one Product Key. I use Windows as my daily driver. It is also great.
I just got out of Ubuntu. I sort-of enjoyed it, but it's extremely underwhelming in the ease-of-use market of today. Let's face it: The software center is small, sometimes convenient, but sucky. I didn't like Windows but HAD to go back because I NEEDED my software back. I don't like EVERYTHING being done in a command terminal, and I'd like it if I didn't have to worry about something as simple as shutting my computer down.
Linux and Mac OSX are all based on UNIX while windows is based on C99. Linux and Mac are extremely similar. So lockergnome is just another mac fan preaching about their fucking OS and related OS'es how its "so much better" than windows. You gotta stop making these comparison vids bro......
@xskydevilx It is just a kernel, but when you package it together, it's an OS. Kernel + Userland = OS. I also agree with Linus on the naming. The distro maker gets to name their distro. Therefore I have no problem with omitting GNU from GNU/Linux, and just calling it Linux.
Hello everybody , i am confused , i got this error all th time , flash player crash , whenever i wanted to see a flash video on both ff and chrome , to be honest i am sick of having this problem and i looked on the internet for solutions but never get it works , note this problem comes when i read facebook videos ( only the long ones ) i need help ,note i am running windows 7 32 bits.many thanks in advance :)
To be totally fair, I never really include Viruses as an argument against windows because if Linux becomes Number one then it will suffer as well. Ubuntu for me works better then windows on my hardware, Debian works more efficient on my old HP Compaq Persario 6000. Because of the internet, I fail to see how X os is better then z os. Today, it comes right down to user agreements. do you not mind dealing with drms and Cd codes, or do you want to be able to do whatever you want with the software?
@wooka64 In the end, choosing an operating system should not be like choosing your Religion or political party. use what you want to use, and don't act Superior because of your choice. Windows,Mac,Linux Fanboys are all equally annoying. they act as if they are saving your soul if you switch to their preferred operating system. again I say its not that serious lol.
@SayonaraProduction Oh boy. Even I would buy a mac after vista. I repair computers on the side of school, and do you want to know the number one problem? People still have vista. Networks crash, file permissions go crazy, viruses install before the operating system pulls up the task manager, bloated, and no software made for the average joe can speed it up. ever. Enjoy your mac :]
Much of Vista’s criticism comes in the form of “XP is better, and it is. I'm not a Mac "fanboy" but I can see why so many are, and why the feeling with Microsoft for the majority of "alpha geeks" is boredom.
Windows is configure to work for you if you buy it at the store. Linux depending on your distro may or may not be. With Linux you need to know your hardware before installing but they have live CD. Windows owns about 90% market so hardware drivers not a problem. Their both good it just depends on preferences and what you are willing to deal with. They both piss me off differently, but Linux gives me more freedom. Windows gives me more games. The Deal breaker fro me is the DRMs in windows.
And the final comparison is each Operating System is better at doing different things. What a fucking revelation. "The average user prefers Windows over Linux", wow no shit. Thanks for your insightful thoughts Chris -_-
If Linux had a wider/better support for my hardware (ATi/AMD drivers), games and software - I probably would switch to Linux because it feels a whole lot nicer than Windows to use. Until then I just stick to Windows on my PC and use Joli OS (a great cloud based Ubuntu distro) on my netbook, and every other flavour of Linux in VMWare.
I use Linux and Windows. Windows for me, is primarily for gaming, Linux for everything else. I prefer Linux. I don't have to o to the store to buy software, I have thousands of programs available in my package manager. The average user prefers Windows because that's what comes preinstalled on their machines. And if you ask me,Mac OSX is the far better choice for novices, over Windows or Linux.
I used both of Linux and Windows, in UI, Windows is more clearer in font and window border process. In Linux you can do whatever you want but you have to know a code of Terminal which I don't :(
Out of the box is a bullshit argument try doing a fresh Windows install from scratch on some box that you have no idea what specific hardware is "In The Box." You might start by making a very big pot of coffee because it going to be a long night!
@TheRanblingjohnny Yup. When I install a Linux distro, 9 times out of ten every piece of hardware works, out of the box. No searching around for drivers.
people buy microsoft not because they wanted but because it's sold pre-installed in the computers you buy, I am sure that if everyone knew about linux the stats would be different specially in countries of the second and third world where people are still using the computers that people already threw away in the first. Linux is lacking marketing that's all but since there's no profit, there's no money for publicity. And since there's no significant market there's no major commercial backup.
I like Linux simply because it's open-source. I love open-source. Linux(an its software) is free, altough I could pay for it. And Linux is lighter. I like Windows too, it's not tto bad neither. I have both OS's installed on my PC.
Saying it works out of the box is disingenuous. You are talking about preinstalled. Yes there are vendors selling preinstalled Linux systems. The installation process on windows has gotten better but Linux tends to detect and have drivers on disc more often than windows
@LordDrachenblut Installation is just one component of "just works". Even there, Linux still has issues... for example I tried to install a recent version of Ubuntu, and the installer wouldn't give intelligible information on destination drives/partitions (speaking of which, that whole interface is far too "much" for an ordinary user)... the solution was to wipe "residual" raid information on the disk(s) (no longer raided) that Windows was smart enough to not get hung up on.
Linux is better then Windows When it works. ( emphasis on when it works. ) But finding a Linux Distro made after 2007 that works 100% is kind of a challenge. Linux seems to be getting More and More sloppy of a system all the time. i am a huge Linux fan so i hate to admit it but i am loosing faith in Linux. and after looking at the direction windows is going i am kind of loosing faith in windows as well when little i had to begin with. i was a big fan of snow leopard though but not OS XLion.
windows is better than linux because face it, the more money you pay, the better things you get. linux is good, but only for a small range of people. windows applies to everyone.
@dudeproductions100 Each OS has it's pros and cons, something that really only the user of the OS knows about. It's the user that judges what is good, or better.
e.g. "the more money you pay, the better things you get."
This statement is far to broad to be accurate, for example, OSX Lion only costs $32, and one could argue the software it gets is better than Windows.
Now I admit it's not exactly a far comparison, but I'm just trying to highlight how your statement is wrong.
Linux is so underrated, it's used primarily in embedded systems, commercial servers (apache, etc). That's why people don't hear much from Linux. I tend to think that it's much more flexible than Windows in many ways. Ever since I started college, I learned lots of things in Linux that I find much easier to manage compared to Windows. However, they both have their drawbacks, let's just end it there...
@Chrisevil Depends on what you're using to rate when you say "underrated". Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. I prefer Solaris over Linux, but only because I have different wants and needs from other people. So saying it is underrated is a bit vague.
To the average person, the advantages of Linux aren't necessarily useful, so it's not really fair to say they underrate Linux. It's best to avoid that sort of thing and just say each OS satisfies different wants and needs.
@iDoiStuff OS is made for a certain thing. Running a computer period. If someone is a modder, linux. If someone is an avradge user, windows. If your a media junky, OSx(not a apple nerd, but desent example).
@lockergnome i like them, i use all of these operating systems, but its nice to see the comparisons. I've never really cared of the difference between them.
There are some very simple Linux distributions, e.g., Ubuntu-based distros. The same people who prefer Windows for its "out of the box" value probably also pay for antivirus software and use IE because they're afraid of messing up their computer by downloading another browser. I didn't like Windows but HAD to go back because I NEEDED my software back. I don't like EVERYTHING being done in a command terminal, and I'd like it if I didn't have to worry about something as simple as shutting my computer down.
Windows, welcome back to my PC.

Mac is better if you're a designer
TurkiyeCumhurbaskani 2 months ago
@TurkiyeCumhurbaskani
Not if you design objects like, cars, furniture and consumer electronics.
And there is no graphics design either, that you can do any better with a Mac, than with Windows.
I am a designer.

Linux and Mac OSX are all based on UNIX while windows is based on C99. Linux and Mac are extremely similar. So lockergnome is just another mac fan preaching about their fucking OS and related OS'es how its "so much better" than windows. You gotta stop making these comparison vids bro......

Linux is just a kernel, not an operating system.
xskydevilx 2 months ago
@xskydevilx It is just a kernel, but when you package it together, it's an OS. Kernel + Userland = OS. I also agree with Linus on the naming. The distro maker gets to name their distro. Therefore I have no problem with omitting GNU from GNU/Linux, and just calling it Linux.

but MacOS is better than Windows (it just works!) and linux is better than MacOS and Windows is better than linux, so which is really better?
howie399b 2 months ago
To be totally fair, I never really include Viruses as an argument against windows because if Linux becomes Number one then it will suffer as well. Ubuntu for me works better then windows on my hardware, Debian works more efficient on my old HP Compaq Persario 6000. Because of the internet, I fail to see how X os is better then z os. Today, it comes right down to user agreements. do you not mind dealing with drms and Cd codes, or do you want to be able to do whatever you want with the software?
wooka64 2 months ago
@wooka64 In the end, choosing an operating system should not be like choosing your Religion or political party. use what you want to use, and don't act Superior because of your choice. Windows,Mac,Linux Fanboys are all equally annoying. they act as if they are saving your soul if you switch to their preferred operating system. again I say its not that serious lol.

after vista, i purchased a mac ;)
SayonaraProduction 2 months ago
@SayonaraProduction Oh boy. Even I would buy a mac after vista. I repair computers on the side of school, and do you want to know the number one problem? People still have vista. Networks crash, file permissions go crazy, viruses install before the operating system pulls up the task manager, bloated, and no software made for the average joe can speed it up. ever. Enjoy your mac :]
sam11182 2 months ago
@sam11182 Thanks ;)
Much of Vista’s criticism comes in the form of “XP is better, and it is. I'm not a Mac "fanboy" but I can see why so many are, and why the feeling with Microsoft for the majority of "alpha geeks" is boredom.
SayonaraProduction 2 months ago
Windows is configure to work for you if you buy it at the store. Linux depending on your distro may or may not be. With Linux you need to know your hardware before installing but they have live CD. Windows owns about 90% market so hardware drivers not a problem. Their both good it just depends on preferences and what you are willing to deal with. They both piss me off differently, but Linux gives me more freedom. Windows gives me more games. The Deal breaker fro me is the DRMs in windows.
wooka64 2 months ago
One word drivers
If you retain older hardware lets say this beautiful scanner.. nothing broken with it yet. Windows 7 drivers for that old thing.. hahahahha no way.
Linux? Oh yes ever since 5 years ago it has support for it.

it works for me that matters right
Happy it tends to stay clean and well only requires 3 reinstalls [due to hardware issues]
Windows.. mmm I guess Vista killed it for me! Maybe 7 is very stabile and very secure.. I guess. You know.. this ubuntu thing works.

eventfularse 2 months ago

And if you ask me,Mac OSX is the far better choice for novices, over Windows or Linux.
waynefoutz 2 months ago
I used both of Linux and Windows, in UI, Windows is more clearer in font and window border process. In Linux you can do whatever you want but you have to know a code of Terminal which I don't :(
staffersteward 2 months ago 2
Out of the box is a bullshit argument try doing a fresh Windows install from scratch on some box that you have no idea what specific hardware is "In The Box." You might start by making a very big pot of coffee because it going to be a long night!
TheRanblingjohnny 2 months ago
@TheRanblingjohnny Yup. When I install a Linux distro, 9 times out of ten every piece of hardware works, out of the box. No searching around for drivers.
waynefoutz 2 months ago
people buy microsoft not because they wanted but because it's sold pre-installed in the computers you buy, I am sure that if everyone knew about linux the stats would be different specially in countries of the second and third world where people are still using the computers that people already threw away in the first.

Kerns0Phoegon 2 months ago
Saying it works out of the box is disingenuous. You are talking about preinstalled. Yes there are vendors selling preinstalled Linux systems. The installation process on windows has gotten better but Linux tends to detect and have drivers on disc more often than windows
LordDrachenblut 2 months ago
@LordDrachenblut Installation is just one component of "just works". Even there, Linux still has issues... for example I tried to install a recent version of Ubuntu, and the installer wouldn't give intelligible information on destination drives/partitions (speaking of which, that whole interface is far too "much" for an ordinary user)... the solution was to wipe "residual" raid information on the disk(s) (no longer raided) that Windows was smart enough to not get hung up on.

Why is Linux better than Mac OS X
KOLTON545 2 months ago

MonkeyThatIsLuminous 2 months ago
it all depend on what you need to be able to do and how you are willing to get it done
shawnygz 2 months ago in playlist Hauls, Freelancers, Target, and Windows vs Linux
Chrisevil 2 months ago
@Chrisevil Depends on what you're using to rate when you say "underrated". Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. I prefer Solaris over Linux, but only because I have different wants and needs from other people. So saying it is underrated is a bit vague.
To the average person, the advantages of Linux aren't necessarily useful, so it's not really fair to say they underrate Linux. It's best to avoid that sort of thing and just say each OS satisfies different wants and needs.
