It's hard to find 50 to 100lbs of old clothes. I went to my local home depot and bout for $7 30lbs of insulation blower foam, it breaks down into chunks or pieces like cushion filling material. I used carpet padding as instructed and inserted 3x 10lbs weider plastic weight plates that I bought for $2 each at a local thrift store. Those plates are in the middle FLAT side towards the punching surface, surrounded by that mega-tightly packed insulation stuff. Fast, easy, perfect!
You can visit our web site immortal martial arts for more info on how to fill the bag. Generally, Goodwill will give you clothes they cannot sell. Any place like that would be a good place to get rags.
I have a filled heavy bag that is good for the moment, but later I'd like to remove the filling and fill it with something else so it's heavier. I've had it for quite a while and I'm not sure how heavy it is; but nonetheless, I'd like it to be heavier so I can get more knockout power.
The bag will hold around 80-90 lbs of rags but must be packed tightly and as the bag is used the rags will settle and more rags should be added. Also you can add 5-10 lbs of play sand wrapped in zip lock bags and then duck tapped. Hope this helps. Both the leather and vinyl unfilled bags can be purchased at immortal martial arts.com

My dad sew a punching bag using pvc but the material is stretchable. When I filled in and I measure it's about 90lbs and hanged it, the lower part of the bag got bigger and the upper part of it gets thinner and stretched. The punching bag got longer, what should I do?
The max weight that you should fill the bag is 100 lbs. The weight will vary depending on how tight you pack it and how many sand bags you add. As suggested in the video you should weigh the bag half full so that you can make any necessary adjustment.
i rolled up a length of carpet, slipped it into the bag and filled the center of the roll with small bags of dirt like this works well but i had to make the bags of sand myself, where did you purchase yours?
I suggest that you get some heavy duty medium sized plastic storage bags then fill it will play sand that you can by from the home store. I then wrap the bag with duct tape and place it in the center of the carpet padding and bag with rags stuffed around it. 3-5 lbs of sand per bag works well.
Great video. Can you explain where the carpet padding is placed in the bag. Is it inside the circumference of the bag from top to bottom or only part of it. If it is all around the inside of the bag how will you be able to press the rags as much as you can to the bottom. I think that the carpet padding will be on the way to press down the rags. Can you help?
Hi thanks for the positive comments. The carpet padding is made into a cylinder and placed into the bag against the inside of the bag. Then you will put the rags and any sandbags in the center of the bag so that the padding is on the outside of the rags and will protect your hands and make for a smoother striking surface.
A lot of rags can fit into the bag. also the carpet padding adds some weight. My suggestion is to add two bags of sand 5 lbs each wrapped in duct tape. Put these in the middle of the bag not bottom. The bag will also settle with use so you can add more rags/weight with use.
If you mean the top part, you would want to push down on the filler with your fist or a bat. I suggest slamming it down to help it to settle but after you use it for a while it will settle on its own and you will need to add a few more rags. The unfilled vinyl bags that we use are really tough, affordable and are being used in many commercial gyms and martial art schools. I personally use the bag I filled in the video for my combat training program, Delaware Combat University.

Excellent, useful info that's not covered elsewhere. Another bit of useful info would be methods of hanging a heavy bag in ceiling rafters.

I don't think the rags are heavy -.-?
