While Katatonia is not quite my cup of tea just yet, I did see them live last night in San Diego opening for Opeth, and they played an amazing show. The show is making me like them a whole lot more.

This song in particular, too, they rocked the shit out of it. Thumbs up to Katatonia!

Saw Katatonia in King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. A tiny venue in Scotland. And I would never even have known they were even playing if I hadn't glanced at a page in my friend's shitty magazine full of indie emo scottish bands!

Engel, then Katatonia, then Paradise Lost. All in the tiniest little venue. Awesome!

katatonia and opeth have almost NOTHING to do with eachother musicwise. that comes from a guy who loved katatonia for almost ten years now and never managed to like opeth except their acoustic melodic stuff. opeth's guitar sound is a pain on my eardrums, and the melodies, they are just too progressive for me. katatonia is darkness and sincerity on every level. and man, they have their own sound. listen to brave murder day, mike sings yet the music has nothing to do with opeth

I just wanted to say that I strongly urge anybody that listens to Katatonia and has not picked up there latest album NIGHT IS THE NEW DAY to go out and buy it now! It is truly one of the greatest if not the greatest Metal albums I have ever bought! I literally do not have the words to describe the pure Amazement that this album holds! simple Words like BEAUTIFUL, TRANSCENDING, BREATHTAKING, and STUNNING! almost dont do it. Ive never gotten such Chills! Ive never been so addicted to a album! \m/

This band has a nice atmosphere, but the song structures are just too typical and predictable - the way their songs alternate consistently between bridge/chorus/verse. Perhaps I'm too use to prog nowadays. I think Anathema is better.

Another good band in this similar style is Poets of the Fall, they're really good. Remind me a lot of a mix of the calmer Ozzy songs with Katatonia. Look up Carnival of Rust.

Opeth and Katatonia have some similar sounds because Akerfeldt and Renkse have been best friends for many, many years. They have similar influences, and they have worked together on various projects. Instead of comparing the two, simply recognize them both as fantastic bands.

I just recently found out about this band. I happened to catch the middle of "Forsaker" on the metal channel. I was instantly captivated by the vocals and the pure trance of the music. It immediatly reminded me of Opeth. So i got online to check them out and listen to more songs. Then i came across the song "July" and was blown away. Then found out Mikael Åkerfeldt had performed on 2 of the bands albums. And there singer plays bass in Bloodbath with Akerfeldt. MIND BLOWING MUSICIANS! \m/

@FallDownist I listen to Bloodbath, Mr. Akerfeldt is a BEAST! I'll listen to anything with him in it. I'am a Opeth fanatic. I know Jonas plays bass in the band also wich is Awesome. One band with 2 of the greatest vocalist in Metal in it. Fuck YES! could you imagine if Jonas or Mikael did a song together on either one of the bands future albums as a guest vocalist. I think it could be one of the greatest collaborations in metal history! And NIGHT IS THE NEW DAY is Metal album of the decade! \m/

@lambofgodsc On a side note i know Mikael did guest growling vocals on 2 of Katatonia's early albums. I strictly mean If they were to do a collaboration now all these years later with both bands and vocalists being much more matured and grown in there musical experience. and to have them both just do clean vocal singing, and at parts Harmonize together. Just to hear them both do that in there current state as musicians would be amazing. Just one Great 12 minute song!
