The Chain Reaction was Steven Tyler's first recording band, and the band's first 45 (single) was "The Sun"/"When I Needed You." It was released on "Date Records" {part of CBS [now Sony] Records} in 1966, and produced by Richie Gotteher.
"The Sun" was recorded at CBS studios, starting on August 25th, 1966. The recording of "The Sun" took three weeks because Steven wanted it to be perfect. "When I Needed You" was recorded in about fifteen minutes on September 9th, 1966.
You should read his self biography "Does the sound in my head bother you?", it's all there folks! And he was the lead singer in Chain Reaction, also known as the Strangeurs where he was the drummer.
The day that Columbia, Sony, Date and Verve Records figure out what this Song IS about - will be the day of THE Miracle DEI Movie, and the beginning of FREE Energy
Hey Grendelmonster8u, I don't recall anything about ST holding up the recording, although that's entirely possible. He was/is definitely very ambitious, which probably helped get him to where he is today! I remember the Chain Reaction playing a concert at my high school in CT, where they were the opening act for either the Rascals or the Kinks! So whoever was managing them, was getting them into some good venues!
Hi you youngsters! Yes, it's Steve Tallarico singing, I knew him way back when, when the Chain Reaction/Thee Strangeurs used to play at a disco in Westport, CT (in the basement of an ice cream parlor, fer gawd's sake)! I believe we're talking 1966??? This was released on a 45, flip side was "When I Needed You".
@cindystal I read that Steven held up their time in recording this b/c he wanted to get it right. Is that true? I'm wondering why b/c it doesn't seem like a complicated song. It's a sweet song, really, even though it sounds kind of corny; a bunch of the hot British bands had corny songs in the mid-60s besides.
It interests me b/c I didn't know about this ST period, they got a couple of 45s & it's evident that ST had driving ambition despite controlling? There was a lot of good music then.
It's Steven singing, you can tell. It's 1966. It just sounds like yet developed vocals, which wasn't uncommon for 60s singers anyway. It's a sweet song that would be good for kids, as with goofy Beatles songs like "Yellow Submarine." It has a nice melody. It's pretty obvious that it's ST on the far right - stylish scarf, shoes & hair!
Steven Tyler was the drummer when the band were called The Strangeurs and then became the frontman when they changed their name to Chain Reaction. You can clearly hear that this is Steven Tyler 's voice, and like many have said, his voice back then was higher and with a softer tone, just listen to some early Aerosmith :0)
He was the lead singer and drummer for a while in Chain Reaction. I can tell it is his voice. Listen to early Aerosmith and you'll be able to tell too. He's just going for a softer tone here but it is his voice. You can really tell it's him at 1:10 when a little raspyness comes through. Their keyboardist sang backup.
For all you saying that its not Steven because it doesnt sound like his Mama Kin, Movin' Out, One Way Street voice it is him. He changed his voice during the recording for the first Aerosmith because he was nervous and he didnt think his normal voice was enough.
i think his voice sounds different here because he was just starting out, and had to get used to his singing voice and find himself. it's not tollorico, tylerico, or any of that. his name is STEVEN VICTOR TALLARICO!!!
Well... screwing up a name like that is very easy to do. Anyway... You can't really say that Steven was at the time of this recording ( which I had a copy of, by the way...) was new to the business. This record was made in 1966 or '67. Steven had local bands going back to '63 that I knew about and before that he played drums in his father's... I guess it was a small Jazz onsamble ( Sp...? ) at their ski resort in New England. His Mother father and Grandfather were all muscians...
Top: Ray Tabano I think ( not sure ) ... Lower Row: L-R : Probably Henry Sneidermanm ( not sure ) Next: Didn't know his name, Played a Gretch guitar very well but wasn't much into the "Hippie" image, very tall and was with Steven for a very long time. Next: Probably Don Soloman, played organ and was with Steven for a long time too; left: Steven
Bottom: Seluki dog. ( in the Afghan family... we had one too...! )
I'm not really a big fan, but I knew Steve Tollarico ( that's his real name ) in the days that he and his buddies made this record and I had a copy of it in 45 rpm. Sure that's him...
Yeeaaah, the funny things is that i saw an interview where he was laughing at himself singing this song "It comes once a day...." it was during the rock'n roll fantasy camp.
ya steven is most deffinatly the singer. im doin a report on Aerosmith, nd in this vid i'm watching, they said tht he fronted Chain Reaction. nd u can tell tht it's him. 4 those of u tht say he wuz the drummer, he did play the drums. tht's part of how he got started. so ur half right, but in Chain Reaction he wuz the singer.
o, nd btw, it's not Tollarico or Tylerico, it's Tallarico. ThomasDeLello wuz the closest, but thn again, he could've made a typo......just lettin ya'll kno.......
No. He had another drummer at that time. He drummed for the "Strangeurs" and some of them moved over to the CR. when they merged with the Perry-Hammilton line-up. They booted Tabano ( he was an ass hole ) and got Whitford and became Aerosmith. I am from Yonkers and knew Steven and Ray.
You didn't know him... I did...! Do you know why Perry and Hamilton booted him from the Airosmith lineup...? I'll give you a hint... he was an ass hole.
Yes... he was an obnoxious f*ck. He would borrow money from you and put you off constantly when you tried get your pay back. He was one of those guys that seems to have just a little too much testoscerone in his blood. You couldn't trust Ray Tabano. The proverbial Italian "Wise Guy"... if you know what I mean.
This song is catchy, but it sounds like a kids' song. It almost sounds like something from Sesame Street. As the harmonica intro begins, some character with a cheesy grin says, "Hey boys and girls, now we're gonna learn about Mr. Sun! He comes around once a day!"
The funny flip side to this is that Aerosmith did record a version of the Sesame Street song, "I Love Trash" which sounded raunchy, sexually charged, and hardly anything like the original, even though the lyrics were not changed.
He did do drums and he sang to. He had a micro on his drums, read there biography. He started aerosmtih and he did not want to be both he just wanted to sing out front where he belongs.
he became lead singer of aerosmith not chain reaction. He left chain reaction and then was going to be a drummer for aerosmith but they found joey kramer so steven took lead vocals of aerosmith. This is not him singing lead dosent even sound like him. All early aerosmith records his voice is much deeper, then these vocals.
In 1967 my brother and I used to play this song over and over Rapson's Bar juke box in Portchester; was the only place we ever heard it. We tried to buy it from the bartender; he would'nt sell it...I recall it was on a yellow label. Good song.
His mother came to school to defend him because they were grooming him for show business. Then he had drug-bust legal trouble and they wouldn't let him graduate because of it and that's why those pictures never go into the yearbook.
I first met Steven in October of 1964. Soon the Beatles came over to do the Ed Sullivan Show and right away Steven had his hair long before anybody else did. I would have been in the same Graduation class as him if I haden't left the public school system in the 5th grade. Anyway... The photographer for the yearbook made him pin up his hair and he didn't loke that. He defiantly shook his hair loose and had trouble for it.
This is rare...I remember when they came out with this on a 45 rpm record and I had a copy. I knew Steve Tollarico, I am from Yonkers. I haven't heard this since '67...! It's a good song.
He was extremely popular in high school... He was a self promoter who stood out in the crowd and made it his business that everybody would know who he was and what he was doing. That's how he would get the clubs and venues filled. Everybody at the Roosevelt High School knew and talked about Steven and his antics. His parents backed him up. His band got to play openers at the Westchester County Center at least twice that I know where the big names would perform. Not bad for a local band...eh...?
In the autobiography Steven said he went through hell in school and had to down alchohol in the morning just to help him deal with it. Was he teased at all?
I don't know about his alcohol, but I will tell you this... Steven was very high profile and very well liked throughout his high school years. Anybody who knew him then will tell you that. I can't imagine that what he "said" in that autibiography is true but I will tell you this... Steven was the kind of guy who was "on Stage"... even when he wasn't on stage if you know what I mean and everything he did was done with a lot of exaduration and drama...
[ part II ] that is just the way he was. His alcohol story I suspect was B.S. Steven, in his high school years was definately cultivating fame even if it was only on a local level. He wanted all of Roosevelt Highschool to come out to his local gigs just to boost his drewing power before the club owners... Wha I am saying is... He was "Crazy"... like a FOX...!
I think it is Steven singing, I thought it said so in Walk This Way (the book). He changed his voice for Aerosmith's first album cuz he didn't like it.
Anyway, thanks SO much for uploading this! I've looked all over for it ^^
@ViviOrunitia1111 Hey, I think Steven played the drums in this band. That's what I've read somewhere xD doesn't sound like his voice, but he was a lot younger and it's another type of music so maybe it is him. I don't think so, though.
@TheRamblersBluesRock Everywhere I've read & in the Walk This Way book, it says he played drums with the Strangeurs & then only lead vocals w/ Chain Reaction, plus he's referenced working on this song. His voice is deep enough here & LOTS of mid-60s singers' voices changed for their late 60s early 70s stuff. My question is if he's playing the harmonica, which of course he knows how to play.
me gusta esta cancion, por cierto steven tocaba la bateria pero tambien cantaba en algunas de las canciones y en 2 de las que grabaron, esta cancion y la otra es 'you should have been here yesterday'... en "when i need you" no canta steven, pero en las otras 2 sip
oh perdon steven canta en "Ever Lovin' Man" y en "The sun"
en "you should have been here yesterday" no estoy seguro porque no recuerdo bien esa cancion, pero las otras si las tengo y se que quien canta es Steven, se nota claramente ademas por el registro alto de voz que steven tiene.
Oh, sorry.I tried to identify if it was his voice or not,but I couldn't!! Are you sure it's him singing?? I heard this song so many times that I can't tell anymore XD
Please, if you have more information, it would help a lot!

Actually, I believe Steven did sing these songs. I remember reading it in Aerosmith: Walk This Way and on a few Aerosmith dedicated sites.

me gusta esta cancion, por cierto steven tocaba la bateria pero tambien cantaba en algunas de las canciones y en 2 de las que grabaron, esta cancion y la otra es 'you should have been here yesterday'... en "when i need you" no canta steven, pero en las otras 2 sip

oh perdon steven canta en "Ever Lovin' Man" y en "The sun"
en "you should have been here yesterday" no estoy seguro porque no recuerdo bien esa cancion, pero las otras si las tengo y se que quien canta es Steven, se nota claramente ademas por el registro alto de voz que steven tiene.

Oh, sorry.I tried to identify if it was his voice or not,but I couldn't!! Are you sure it's him singing?? I heard this song so many times that I can't tell anymore XD
Please, if you have more information, it would help a lot!

From what I understand he was the drummer in this band. This doesn't sound remotely like him.

I recognize the harmonica, but that isn't Steven singing is it?

No, Steven doesn't sing in CR, he plays drums only.
