I like her playing. But, I wish that at least once or twice in this performance that she would look at and acknoladge the other musicians playing along with her. It's like she is saying I'm playing and if you can keep up withme then good for you but I will not play with you. You can see their pained expressions throughout the entire lenght of this video.
Thjis makes this video hard for me to watch as often as I would like.
I don't think she realized the distortion was going on with the veena . She would not have agreed to it. She, along with Smt. Rugmini Gopalakrishnan are some of the last great living older generation of veena masters....
The distortion is not from the recording. The violin and percussion are clear. The distortion is from the amplification of the veena itself. She must have heard it that way.
Thank you for this gem! Would like to add for the benefit of your viewers that kalpakam mAmi is playing a rarely performed varNam, "samukhamunu," in nATa rAgam, aTa tALam, composed by vaDivELu in praise of svAti tirunAl.

vaDivElu is one of the Tanjavur quarter, if I am correct.
what a brilliant varNam, and well, I am not even qualified to comment on maami's delivery of the same. I am way too mortal for that.

Yes! And none less than muddusvAmi dIkshitar called him an "EkasandhagrahI": someone who can grasp a song by listening to it just once!
