I really don't like how much Carrie waves around her arms when she's using her powers. That makes it look like "magic" instead of telekinesis...a very minuscule difference, I suppose, but I think that's what makes it so powerful in both of the films. She's causing all of this destruction while standing perfectly still.
I find the real problem to be the shortness of this scene and the finale. I feel it would have been more powerful including the destruction of the whole town. Also, if mabye you could actually see who is getting killed. The Lazers...Just why? I just cant wait for the revival. They are going to do everything right, I just know it.
@WizardofOzFan123 Just saw the revival on Tuesday. Sadly, they did not do everything right and this scene was a particular disappointment. There were many improvements to the show, but it still wasn't a great musical unfortunately.
Musically, this has lots of potential. The song is powerful and portrays the right emotions. Very effective. Its really the visual that fails. The set reallly makes no sense and the special effects were used poorly. If the set looked more like a gym and there was a better visual of Carrie's power, it very well could have worked. I'm definatly for a revival.
I itch to restage this, recostume and redesign the whole prom and especially this. I'm sorry, it just does not work. I also like better the movie/book in which Tommy tries to defend her from the mockery but is hit on the head by the bucket and knocked out. It shows him more as a decent guy, which was King's original intent and a much more sympathetic character, than trying to escape to Sue does and makes his death -- accidentally at the hands of two women who loved him -- really tragic.
@kaijumovies96 This is true. Incredibly Terry Hands, THE SHOW'S DIRECTOR also had no idea what a prom was. He had also never directed a musical before. Kinda explains a lot doesn't it?
I think he collapsing roof/ descending enormous staircase is the best technical effect and set piece in that show. It's awesome but u really cannot ignore the truly terrible production design of the show.
Barbara Cook was almost decapitated by the moving set. I think you can hear it happen at 4:05. I believe this accident convinced her to quit the show.
This has to be the most spectacularly awful set design I've seen in my life. Why was everything done in a giant mirrored box when realism would have been even more powerful? Like in "And Eve Was Weak" or the other songs in the White household? I now understand why this show flopped. The score is beautiful, the cast is talented, but there was no way to overcome such strange design.
I think the mirrors were to make the flashes and lazers show up more. although they could have just used more lazers, i guess. I personally like the lazers, but they needed different positioning or something. and while it was the climax, the instrumental part could have been cut a bit, i think. I mean i like it, but it could lose your atention easily, i think. just my opinion, though. I wish i could see the full musical, though.
@writingsketch I feel like there are more reasons than that. Just for example, the fact that they never bothered to explain Carrie's powers, leaving everybody in the audience not familiar with the movie/book baffled.
@writingsketch A musical like Carrie begs to be theatrical and suggestive rather than realistic is where it's at. The beauty of suggestive staging elements in theatre is they actually end up achieving a more compelling sense of reality in their evoking of a given setting, as they nudge at us and we fill in the rest via imagination. The problem with this ridiculous set of visual cues before us is they aren't strategic in their approach and suggest many things--sensory overkill.
@writingsketch they used the mirror box to emphisize that there is no possibal way out for the actors in the scean not even by running off stage which i think is a lot better than having a bunch of doors just slam shut
It's supposed to be Sue, the one who has her boyfriend ask Carrie to prom, but isn't allowed to go to prom after doing so because you had to have a date.
And, yes, those are supposed to be the stairs of the school, but the bigger implication is that Carrie is collapsing the roof of the gym on the participants.
So, Carrie powers are: 80s lasers show, blinding fireworks, give her costars stomach aches, make panels move up & down and pull a big staircase out of nowhere (?)
Epic fail and I love every minute of of it!
Thanks for sharing. I read so much about this musical and finally seeing it in all its glory has leave me speechless.
Hey did anyone else notice that when Carrie gets dumped with the blood, Tommy gets dragged upstage by two guys? Then when Carrie's singing, it look like they're beating Tommy up in the background.
Also when Billy runs onstage, Sue follows behind him, runs up to Carrie, and then slowly backs offstage.
Well right after the blood is poured a couple of the boys drag him up state and in the mirrors you can see him fighting to get to her (rather lamely)... Then once the destruction starts at the very beginning he can be seen up at the scrim that random falls, trying to get to Sue (You can actually her Sue cry 'Tommy look out' or 'get out'... Something like that) And then he is the last person Carrie kills, he crawls onto the platform at the end and she kills him
Ooooh, wait... Maybe it is Chris... The body frame does look kinda small...
and now that I rewatch it... near the end (prior to Billy jumping onto the platform) i'm pretty sure Tommy and maybe Gardener are at the scrim with Sue and Carrie 'shoots' whoever the woman is and Tommy picks her up and heads of stage... But I think Carrie then 'shoots' him before he can make it
I´m not sure but to me the one crawling on the platform after Billy looks like a female shape.. I think you´re right about Tommy and maybe Gardener, he seems to be trying to reach out to Sue before making his (failed) escape..
you should do "the destruction" but broadway version, that would be interesting. also, in the broadway version, do you know if they used more pyro-tech in this scene? cause i saw some footage of fire in "and eve was weak" that wasnt there in the stratford run.
@RadioCityChristmas And where exactly do you think they could get the insurance to have explosions in the audience? Do you have any idea how dangerous/how much of a liability that would be?

I don't understand why Carrie was raised on a lift. Is to give the allusion of Carrie rising off the floor?
