it's not a romantic thing. i think the narrator represents this omniscient presence, the all-knower, the one who has the vision of past, present and future. this is a religious story-telling, bottom line. the message is one of predetermination and the narrator represents that, the guiding line throughout the story, the one who joseph turns to in order to interpret the meaning of events in his life

i don't think that joseph and the narrator were intended to have some sort of romance. i think it was more of a brother/sister type of relationship. like, in the end here where they look into each other's eyes, hold hands and reprise "any dream will do". i believe it was more of a "look how far we've gotten. thank you for sticking by my side." kind of scene and intention.

This is really a Hebrew story rather than a Christian story, although it is also certainly a part of Christian tradition too.

@sdbeconomer --well, it is definitely the Old Testament, however there is a list of over 100 ways that the life of Jesus and the life of Joseph parallell. In fact, it's not too far off the mark to say that Joseph foreshadows Jesus. And most Christians love the story of Joseph.
