  • Could of filled both p/board patches with bonding with a bit of cement as an accellerator and reskimmed full ceiling, job done in 4hours.Everyone does it different so fair play to you.

  • I am curious, do you use an retarder in your finish coat? I use a mix of 3 parts lime putty to 1 part guageing plaster for the finish coat. I dont add retarder and I find that I can only mix small batches.

I do lots of repairs on wood lath and find that the reason for cracks are loose lath. I use a narow crown stapler to renail the lath. then make a slurry mix of structolite and paint it on the lath and margins to promote better bond and eleminate shrinkage. then lay up the scratch and brown

  • Wheres the scrim,he should of got a large snow plale, knock up a load of plaster, and in one hit, lanched it above his head at high speed..............its 10inchs thick, when that drys out,prob- in a years time,it could kill someone if it falls out the ceiling.

  • Every so called plasterer on here is a fucking critic, stop fucking bitching girls.

  • creo q tenia q usar maya de nylon primero y despues usar una regla y despues pulirlo pero bueno todos trabajamos diferente

  • clean that trowell, feeling sorry for it

  • FISHER PRICE MY FIRST PLASTERING KIT. JUST FLOAT AND SET IT WITH CARLITE AND THISTLE.WHATS THAT YOURE USING? AIRLESS PLASTER?? MACHINE PLASTER AINT IT.

  • good work!

  • has ready-mix plastering material asbestos in it ? - did it have asbestos in it about 40 years ago?

  • wheres the scrim around the patch(1 inch of existing plaster scraped back to board )no doubt wlii crack at some stage in future

  • @lilyla2000 Thanks for commenting. I didn't use scrim because the substrate is expanded metal mesh. The new metal I added was tied in very tight. There is an inch of special sand-less plaster. and then a half inch of lime plaster. the edges of the existing plaster was bonded. every thing was pre wetted. it has been three years and no cracks. In the old days no one ever used scrim, maybe metal, horse hair or paper. I did this repair as requested.

  • @lilyla2000 yeah he floated it out well but forgot to use drywall paper or mesh tape....what a bone head

  • you should hit the seems first!

  • ur the slowest most incompetent bastard ive ever seen plaster, well done

  • I think you would be better off putting the plaster on with a bass guitar

  • Thats funny! Wish I could just play bass and do plaster on the side. Play a plaster bass. bass coat!

  • In all seriousness if you are in the UK you know using dirty water will set the plaster off in half the time don't you? I would over fill it very slightly pull a small straight edge over it, very thin last coat just as it is going off and clean edges.

Dry trowel to flatten into existing plaster.

  • Why didnt you just rip the lot down re-board then skim the lot?looks like theres loads of patches that you need to skim

  • The home owner Only wanted me to repair an area that had been repair before. He wanted certain pipes checked by a plumber to be sure they where in good shape. also the ceiling was about 16x24 foot so the cost just to cut out and haul away the rubbish would have been twice the cost of patching. When I do a patch one can not tell where it is. Money well spent.

  • I hate to say it but you seem to be putting a lot of

effort into a small patch and overworking it, ever

    tried lime plastering?

  • Yes I am working it quite a bit. I was putting it on thick and I was working to get the air out. Also the repair is about 40mm thick in total. So there is a lot going on rather than just a small patch and a bunch of arm work. Oh one more thing, it was a time when I had become a little rusty from a slow spell. Thanks for commenting. I would love to go to the UK to see how you guys do it.

  • Its all in the wrist and you got it darggggggg

  • The shape of the patch reminds me of a state.

  • Yeh a right state!!

  • Plastering is my work too and I hate it. I have arthritis in my hands and my elbows and shoulders are fucked. My knees are buggered too. Pays the bills I guess, but I'll be dead before I'm 50. Should'a been a tree surgeon.

  • plasterings your work,,,,wots your hobby then.

  • I play bass guitar?

  • great work !! you should show one where you start from the very beginning, right when you start the demo on the patches.

  • dont you scrim your joints? and why are you playing with it get the fucker on

  • Im getting the air out. The mud is 2 1/2 inches deep with metal lathe. Area has been pre shrunk. I use concrete bonder as well for the existing plaster edges.

  • your pride and skills stick out like dogs balls mate.judging from your responses to questions i don't doubt that you would have taught many a young bugger how to REALLY approach any given situation plasterwise. one would hope they pass that knowledge down appropriately without all the yelling and screaming that seems to be so commonplace with tuition now days.cheers for the post

  • Thanks for you comment, I have taught about 22 guys as much as they could stand. Here in the the US the skill is being undermined due to ignorance and lack of willing workers. Sweat is shunned. Times are a little hard, but the work will come around. Good wishes, Daren.

  • good technique mate, very good , but is the compound gluey as buggery or what? i'm only asking because i've seen how viciously you boys clean your bayden powell with the hawk(bloody bayden- get off-take that) hahaha

  • Thank you, the first coat was pearlited plaster base. the second and third coat was blended lime. I like to give a day for the brown coat as to pre-shrink it. I try to work to lime coats a bit to get the air out of it so shrinkage is minimal. Concrete bonder helps. I like to keep the bade clean and yes is sucks when you just want to get the thing done. Take care and good wishes, Daren

  • Hey im just starting out, going to be going to school taking panting and plastering!!! As anyone would like to do is learn as much before they go into school for it. I like your video !!!

  • sometimes when people hear the good in a person ,for some reason they get a little bit of hateraide ( so to speak) in their blood. Keep up the good work man, that's from the heart. Your work is your blessing . THANK HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for the reminder, take care.

  • so you dont get any problems with cracks? thats good. If i did that with gypsum multi finish without scriming the joint i would still expect it to crack at some point. Thanks for the reply. Dan

  • sorry i meant did you scrim the joint between your patch of what ever it is and the existing ceiling?

  • I used metal lathe and 35 mm of plaster. All edges where bonded. In short, not this time.

  • Did you scrim the joint between the new plasterboard and the existing ceiling? I would expect a few cracks if not.

  • why didnt you skim the hole ceiling the amount you put on for that patch

  • The home owners did not want it done. The ceiling, which the video does not show, was 16 ft by 30 ft.. I had three repairs to do. The other two where a little larger. I try to recommend not skimming over paint as much as possible. never do more work than you need to. the home owners wanted the repairs to be as close to the 100 year old plaster that was metal lathe and two sand base and one coat lime. By the way when they painted it, they could not tell where they were.

  • Hello every one! After the last comment, I feel that it was a little snobbish. I have been in plaster for 27 years. From apprentice to now. I have worked in the office of very large companies and have managed large services departments. I have seen all most every thing bad and good. I have completed over 25,000 repairs Plastered over 3,000 houses with different crews. I have blessed to have owned my business for 4 years. I make a middle class income and I don't care to make more. Thanks all!

  • $75.00 per hour! I charge 100-120/day or 12.50-15.00/ square metre here in the UK. So you guys are well paid over there. I might move to California.

  • Thank you for your comment. I own my own business with insurance for two million dollars. The work I do is mostly in houses that are 60 to 120 years old. The clients that renovate these houses or repair them Demand solutions. They are educated and do not like drunks or druggies. Plasterers and painters have a bad reputation. When I used to work on a plaster crew I made $ 15 tops. I only work by word of mouth. I turn down scrub work and give a card with a thank you! So my jobs are few but good.:)

  • So where are you located? I need some repairs!

  • I am located in virginia.

  • Aw, I'm in San Francisco. Know anyone out here?

  • Control is what I try to achieve. So that when I tell the customer what to expect, it happens. People will Pay for reasonable results if it appears to be crafted rather than beat into shape. Most of the jobs I get nobody wants. They require more overall thought. Fast is good for one coaters but smart make life better in the long run. Plasterers need respect, we make it all look good! Take care Happy New Year!

  • i wouldnt give you $5.00 working at that speed

  • Its not about speed. Its about the end result.

  • i agree, besides you did a good job in that time. In america what is the setting time for your plasters? over here in england two coats we say 3hrs to finish a gauge

  • Well Yates001, if I use a perlited base coat it sets in three hours. I speed that up with gypsum powder. Over metal I do two coats of brown. I let that set over night the wet it the next day to get good feel for the lime coat. I like speeding my mud up so that I can get a good shine on it. I found that if I can get it to set quicker it becomes stronger, less shrinking. I can make mud go as quick as i want but why go so hard? So to make a little more $ and not kill myself. Take the scenic route.

  • Thank you, I do take pride in spite of the low bidder contractors who call me. They really want plaster guys as temps. I charge $75.00 per hour and stay as busy as i want. I will be making more videos as soon as I get a new camera, old one broke and lost all files. take care and hope to show more soon.

  • nice to see some pride being taken in a job, nobody seems to care any more. Nice job

  • Sure looks good dude, just don't get why you won't put over the entire ceiling...any particular reason?

    Keep up that good work...

    Cheers, a colleague form holland..:-D

    Ed

  • Thank you Ed, this was ajob where the ceiling had a leak many years in the past. So the lime had burned the old paint, which caused peeling and minor loosening of the white coat in areas. The owner wanted to check the pipes before I repair the areas. He had me cut out where the pipes are.I used a mason saw then came back after the plumber advised. when going over paint, I always try not to cover more than I need to for fear of of the paint letting loose. Cost to the owner is a factor as well.

  • Damn dude, you are very good!!!

People don't realize the talent that is needed to survive with a trade... Don't listen to the pencil pushers, if you were in my area, I'd definitely ask you for work!

  • Thanks Carl, alot. Many folks think that tradesman are just idiots but old style plasters are almost all gone. I claim all the money i make. These repairs were metal lathe and three coats. The house was built in 1923 newport news va. have restored ten houses in three years, All where under 1940. Thanks again for the support.

  • was that a cash job? i hope u claimed gst lol

  • YOU ARE FUCKING USLESS

  • Thanks, I am sure you have made a huge effort to spell better.

  • ok...my brother uses my account but i'll just reply for him...what spelling mistakes did he make in his comment? jeez...that's the only comeback you americans have when someone cuts ya's off or tells the truth...It's fucking youtube. Ya can use text style writing instead full words as if it were a formal letter.

  • Whats with all the hostility. I just put video of me doing a plaster patch and wham. Its a patch, not a polical statement. I like Irish people. I think, from what I know that you as a country have been beat up for hundreds of years. by the way I made $1800.00 for the work in that house.

  • well i'm not a plasterer...my brother added that comment (i'm an electrician) but a lot of younger americans (computer geeks) always seem to come up with that response (learn to spell)...so i just get sick of that since his comment didn't have any spelling mistakes. (i usually recieve that response cause a lot of the time i use txt style writing)

  • we would say over board..much better job in the end yea?othyer wize add 1 coat of bonding to the old laths and 2 coats of skim 2hours later.job done £120 a day plus materials.
