I was at the Bus Stop chicane in the trees during this race - the first GP I went to. It turned out, Senna went in for wets exactly at the wrong moment - 2 laps later, the rain abated, but it wasn't until lap 24-25 when the first guy (Boutsen) went in for slicks.
Great driving though - it took a lot of work for the first 5 to pass him on their wet tyres.
I'm on this vid!! Take a look at the Union Flag with Mansells Williams on it as Senna exits the Bus Stop and pits.. That was mine! The gizzer smoking under the brolly was my Brother..
I was replying to your comment where you wrote that Barichello was far off Schumacher at Imola 2005....and I wrote that in Australia 2005 Schumacher was nowhere Barichello aswell as in malaysia
I wanted to state that he was not free from mistakes. this was just one (of indeed only a few) examples. either way, it
has never been proven true that benetton used this traction control and senna's spin @ interlagos wasn't due to this traction control, as it happened when steering into the corner.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
senna's great, but senna failed to gain any points in the first two races of 1994 season. his retirement at interlagos was his own fault. it was dry, and he spun and stalled the car.
Indeed but that happened due to his win-or-nothing attitude. And he was competing against a car which was illegal. Benetton was secretly using a traction control which was forbidden for 1994.
Benetton used illegal devices in 1994 and got punished, though not severely enough. You can blame that cheating scum Flavio Briatore, and now it seems he ordered Nelson Piquet to crash last year in Singapore to bring out the safetycar after which Alonso magically happened to pit at the same time and later won the race for Renault (Flavio Briatore)
yeah, i don't doubt about it... but SCUMacher cheated too. it was just pathetic the way he "spun" in monaco...
ow... spa has a very long lap. it means that when it's raining, some places are wet, while others are dry. so, we can't say it was harder driving the car in slicks or not... but Senna's skills in wet conditions are indisputable.
Monaco '85: deliberateley blocked driver's qualifying time to stop them from getting pole.
Estoril '88: tried to push Prost into the pit wall.
Estoril '89: closed the door in an extremely aggresive manner, trying to intimidate Mansell from trying to overtake. They both crashed out, but Mansell for was disqualified for no reason.
Suzuka '89: wrecklessly tried to overtake Prost. He then asked the marshalls for an illegal push-start when he saw Alain had retired. Would have wrongfully won the championship if he hadn´t been disqualified.
Suzuka '90: rammed Prost off the track at over 160mph, secured the championship that way. Even admitted it was revenge, in case you miss the point: mediated foul!
1stly it was by no means a wreckless overtaking move. Prost turned in way too early for the car. 2ndly, Senna asked for his car to be pushed into the escape road (rightly)!!! He managed to get it started in the escape road, therefore he could have never been DSQ from that.
The marshal's gave him a green flag to get back on track and he went on to win the race brilliantly...
Balestre needed any kind of excuse to DSQ Senna and give Prost the title.
schumacher won... btw, search senna cheating at youtube. then search schumacher cheating. give a super tricky benetton to dick dastardly. Ford sucked at 92. benetton and schu are both cheaters.
but... schumi was a great driver. he wasn't better than senna at wet. SENNA KICKED ASSES !!!
Senna had champion team mates like Alain Prost,Damon Hill and Mika Hakkinen, and also proven winners like Gerhard Berger, who won several races before becoming his team mate
Schumacher had Martin Brundle(never won a race), Patrese(in his 17'th season and too old), Verstappen(never won a race), Herbert (didn't win before joining Benetton in 1995), Irvine (won nothing before joining Ferrari and nothing after leaving them), Barrichello (won his 124'th start)
Senna wasn't murdered. He certanly didn't know that the material of the piece that cracked was a different material than the other half because i don't think he would feel safe enough to carry on. It was an accident that was covered up just because it killed the BEST F1 driver that has ever set into a f1 car. I worship Senna. He has always been a person that i look up to for motivation, perseverence and strength.
Yes you may think it was a mistake to drive on slicks in the rain. This is the nature of professionals, take risks. I think he could handle his traction.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am convinced that he made a mistake, but many people will never believe that he could. Why not? He made many mistakes in his career. I have listened to and read endless theories about why, or how, he could have crashed on such a 'simple' corner like Tamburello. No-one other than Ayrton Senna and me know what it was like to drive that car, through that corner, in that race, on that day, on cold tyres. Damon Hill
I agree- I always thought that scientific approach to 'prove' that the car lost traction from bottoming out was pure bull- the car would have spun, not gone straight on
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To say that "Schumacher is just a good driver", clearly illustrates your biased perspective... Any one racing in the F1 circuit is a "good driver"... Yes, Senna was a great champion, but so was Schumacher... Did the guy not win 7 championships? don't be stupid, FranceskoGiuiell...
The difference was that Senna could extract so much more from far inferior equipment. His 1991 World Championship is testament to his extraordinary ability. Schumacher was great, he just didn't have that extra magic that Senna could produce. I doubt very much Schumacher would have won 7 titles had Senna lived on.
Senna: Beat Prost in the same car ('88) Beat Prost's powerful Ferrari ('93) Beat Mansell who had a powerful Williams (1991) Won 5 races and finished 2nd in the '93 World Championship with a crappy Mclaren Ford V8.
how about that he average drivers as team mates too?
it also was in their contracts they were number 2's, and whenever they did race him like Barrichello did in Austria in 2002, he was forced to let his super skilled team mate win....
Senna beat Prost in the same car in 1988. Prost was the must successful driver of all time in 1988 with 28 wins.
Can you 12 year olds stop bickering and just enjoy these two people for what they are. Schumacher is the most successful F1 driver of all time... no questions asked. It's fact... cold fact.
But Senna was the fastest driver of all time bar none (not Jimmy Clark, not Schumacher, not Fangio, no one), and would perhaps beaten Schumacher had he lived.
Quit acting like fools and realise comparisons are futile and don't solve a thing. Senna is a man of the heart, Schumacher a man of the brain :)
i think Jimmy would have given Senna a serious serious run for his money.. I was brought up on the legend of Clark, being dragged round a gravbeyard in Dunnes for ages before finding his grave in a remote corner... and you know what it said.., "Jim Clark - Farmer"...
How you can say,who was fastest?Clark never drove Sennas Mclaren, nor Schumacher or Fangio, nor Senna and Schumacher drove the old cars of Fangio and Clark competitivly in their racing years...you cant say that, they were in defferent eras
The 1992 Williams was head and shoulders above anything else in the field. It was like David and Goliath when Senna tried to keep with the Williams. Just when you thought no team other than Willams will win a race, along came the best Monaco battle ever and Senna victorious!!
Where was michael's at Donnington in 93....nowhwere to be found close to Senna,,Michael was a good wet driver, because the rest of the field was so bad it made him look better. Senna would have blown him away just like he did when they did race in the wet together
More importantly, where was Michael's traction control at Donnington in 93? That's right, not there, because his car didn't get TC until later on in the season. Therefore I would say that Senna had a slight advantage in that race.
I can agree with you on that point, but, tracktion control doesn't prevent you from going into a corner too fast and sliding riding off the road. AndB) Senna is my hero and he made plenty of mistakes ok? I miss him as much as anyone, Bump or broken this or that, Yes it was an easy corner. He was trying to take on a lot, for that car to be fast he had to be on an edge that no one else can understand in that car not even Damon Hill. Let the man rest in Peace
Please, I have nothing but respect for Senna, however I just felt the need to point out that it was not possible to compare Senna and Schumacher at Donnington 93 due to the traction control element.
