Sadly, I only knew Fred Scott as the emcee of the last season or two of "Creature Features" (Sat nights, 8:30-10PM). And, he was positively _spooky_ with that deep, resonant voice...and the way he dressed.*
*Gray pants, blue blazer, and white turtleneck? Shudders! ;-)
I was a big fan of Fred, Sandy, and Soupy-- I don't think we'll see their like these days because the television medium has changed. Even if the shows were live, we'd look at them differently.
It's great to reminince about the old shows but their likes will not be seen again. I remember watching Soupy Sales and he was great. Lets have a big white hand, a little growl, and White Fang hello. Thanks for sharing.
I didn't see him, but it was the day at Kleins Soupy mentions here. There were people out to see him as far as the eye could see, and we heard that a riot had broken out and so Soupy wasn't going to show. There were kids running around with pies they bought at the local bakery to throw at him, I swear, people were nuts and everyone was so charged up...so funny he mentions it. Soupy was God to us kids everybody loved him - and ate what he had for lunch on the show...the coolest guy ever.
I am 54 years old born & raised in N Y City and this brought back so many memories also. Just great to see this. This type of thing is what utube is all about. Thanks so much for putting this up ! I lovewd the mouse and especially when white fang hit Soupy Sales with a pie when Soupy tried to con him ! LOL !!!!! Remember that ? b LOL!!!!!
I loved the Cueing up the video ON THE AIR!!! In TRUE Metromedia 5 Style!! Channel 5 was so run ON THE CHEAP!!! I'll never forget when our cub scout pack got a tour of the studios, and "Uncle Fred" asked us what our favorite Channel 5 show was, one of the kids answered "Technical Difficulties - Please stand By"!!!
I love the old live local shows. Tim Hollis's book "Hi There Boys and Girls!" about local kid's tv shows from around the country is excellent if you're into them.
I won a dance contest once in high school doing The Mouse and The Statue, both of which Soupy Sales taught me. But Sandy Becker was my favourite because he was so flexible. We loved Norton Nork and my sisters and I can still quote a lot of the old Norton Nork skits, much to the dismay of our children!
Interesting how Fred Scott was talking about his real-estate business - being as WPIX announcer Ralph Lowenstein later became VP of a real-estate firm.
Like all the other comments, we all have fond memories about these people, or should I say WITH these people. They became a part of us, and helped shape us and our society at the time... I almost feel sorry for the children of today... Their role models offer little value in todays society. I wouldn't trade the time I was born for anything! Thanks for posting this ;)
Great stuff. When I was a Brownie, or was it a Girl Scout...I was in the audience at BOZO'S show and Officer Joe Bolton walked through and waved at us. Now THAT was exciting to me!
Thank you for sharing this-These guys were my heroes and friends when I was growing up in New York back in the '50s & '60s along with Captain Jack McCarthy and Officer Joe Bolton on WPIX.
Kudos to SandySoup! I have wonderful photos of me and Soupy from a club date on Long Island he did (broadcast on A&E Biography). He was/is so approachable and generous, health situation notwithstanding. I saw Sandy in person as a kid (in '65)at Whites in Massapequa.
