I brought 2 jugs of mobil1 at the same time and they both have different pour point rating? one said -47 and -42. they are both synthetic formula...before I switch to amsoil, whats is your answer to that?
Dunno why they tested a fully synthetic to a partially synthetic oil, however according to SAE viscosity rating system, should not matter what the oil is made up of, it should pour according to the # , so SAE 5W-30 is rated the same no matter what the exact motor oil makeup is. I use Mobile 1 in all my cars, but that VW had a hard time starting up, I wouldn't say it "Started with no problem" it took quite a few crankshaft turns if you ask me.
I would recommend Mobile 1 to anybody. I bought a 1991 Cherokee, and wanted to switch to full synthetic when I did its first oil change. I ran Penzoil Platinum the first time, and burned oil like noones buisness. Next change, I used Mobile 1. Never have I had a start up issue or hardly any oil burning since Ive used it. I've changed my oil with Mobile 1 for over a year now, and will probably never stop.
So how many of you have to start your car up in -40 degree weather, much less in an environment where you are exposed to endured lengths of time where the weather is like that overnight? Wouldn't it be better to have a test with a more realistic temperature for those who don't live in Vermont, South Dakota or Alaska? Not trolling, just want to make you guys think.
@slayerab sounds like you missing the point here dude, im from BC and i regularly get temps that cold.. theres more places you listed that get THAT cold, and pretty much everwhere in america goes to -1 or below atleast, the point here was, synthetic wont just protect you against -1, it will go all the way to minus 40, i like what they did here it shows its just not sub par, they went the whole nine yards. Just looking at that cold flow i know its good enough for my 944 s2.
Rember the sports commercials with that song "Anything you can do I can do better"? If that was how great Mobil 1 is then I would love to see them compare themselves to Royal Purple.
Mobil Super FE Special 5w-30 pour point is -51C. 5w means that oil passed -30C test, but did not passed -35C test. Pour point may be -100C, but oil does not meet -35C test requirements.
Ouch now I feel bad on all those mornings when I started my car and immediately took off when the temp. was below zero. Sometimes my car would even do a funny little whining noise and now I know why lol, BTW I do use Mobil 1 extended performance 5W30. I would like to see a cold flow test between Mobil 1 and Amsoil.
holy cow. If that Mobil 1 is considered good, I don't want to start my car at -40. I don't think that would flow through the veins of the engine very well. I wonder how Penz Platinum, Royal Purple, or Amsoil would do.
Well, if I lived in a region that saw -40 regularly, I wouldn't want either oil! While the M1 did indeed pour, it reminded me more of tree sap than motor oil. IMO, it would take quite a while for fluid that thick to circulate throughout the engine. How testing some of the 0w-x oils at the same temp?
Sorry, but this is biased. Comparing synth oil to semi synth is apples and oranges. Wanna impress me? do the same comparo for Mobil 1, castrol syntec, quaker state synth, ans see which pours fastest.
Comparing against semi-synth is like comparing against straight dino as far as viscosity.
They weren't saying "Mobil 1 is best" they were saying "Synthetic Like Mobil 1 is best" compared to Semi Synth or Conventional. Pay more attention to the wording.

@slayerab No, because that's the point of this video; to show how the oil performs in even the most extreme conditions likely to be experienced.

best oils are fully synth like redline, amsoil, royal purple etc . . . dont use castrol . . as its owned by BP . . . boycott BP

Oh please, as long as consumers demand cheap oil and cheap oil products, all of these oil companies are liable to destroy a given eco system.

comparing synthetic oil with synthetic blend is like comparing ufc fighters with boxers....ofcourse they are different!
And why choose -40 degrees??? (because that's the temp where the synth blend don't work and it does not lie about that either)

I prefer ROYAL PURPLE motor oil products. MOBIL 1 should do a test against ROYAL PURPLE. I betchu ROYAL PURPLE would outbeat their lab test.

That test still was not all that impressive. That Mobil 1 still looked to cold to "pump" There are two cold test, "Pour ability" and "Pump Ability".
Not all Synthetics are made of the same stuff, and some do better when cold and hot.
Thanks for posting this test.

My Honda RidgeLine starts better than that with a layer of Ice and snow in -30 degree weather. And use Motul, it's 2x better.

My Jeep starts better than that in -30F. Valvoline Synpower 5w30 and no engine noise at all.

World first fully synthetic motor oil in 1973 Motul...

Will a block heater really help this problem? Most block heaters heat the engine's coolant and not the oil.
