  • I feel i had a different insight into the event and the media's role. The problem lay in the preconception that it would never be cancelled, as quoted by several of the organizers on the thursday before (when they were flood borrowdale ed out of) and because of this they had no concrete contingency plan.

I don't doubt that all the competitors could cope with what was thrown at them. after all i was out there too. it was bad weather some of the worst i have seen in 30ys of living in the LD.

We live in a media hungry world and we all have to be prepared to work with it, its a tool that can be used in which ever way you like, but if you don't use it it will do what it likes.

I interviewed mike at gatesgarth on the late afternoon, hoping and praying he would give a good sound bite that would say all is ok, everyone is prepared for this weather. and we know where everyone is and all will be fine. if that had happened, it would have gone to a late story in the news.

I love the outdoors and want to see everyone enjoy them, but after 12 years of teaching flying i also see the flip side, if you organize an event you have to plan for all eventualities and accept that things will not always go to plan.

In future don't hide or shy form the media have a strong solid line of communication and a neat well prepared statement, after all, all that time and effort was put into preparing for the weather, put a little into preparing for the media too

  • Like many people, I suspect, I've been pretty disgusted by the media feeding frenzy over this story. I hadn't heard of the OMM, but as a hill walker myself, fully and quickly understood that the news reports had, quite simply, got the wrong end of the stick.

Much kudos to all those who had the spirit and gumption (not to mention the fitness) to take part in a event like this, and commiserations to those who came back to find their cars under several feet of water!

  • you cant beat good advertising .you watch record entries next year. have there been many good weather Karrimor/OMM weekends, think not my hubbie loved them.

  • When all the hoohah dies down, this years race will be the one that people will want to say about it: "I was there when...".
