:O I have 3 chickens and 1 rooster. My rooster is a buff orpington just like your chickens xD. We used to have 4 chickens before we had Rufus "My rooster". It was my fav. one that got killed by my dumb mixed breed small dog.
When I was young we used to have hens and chicks in our yard. I grew up becoming expert in learning their signs and different sounds they make and interpret what they mean.
What a nice creatures, and your hens look great too.
Watching this video has to be good for your health. If more people would watch videos like this, the need for antidepressants would plummet. If more people owned chickens, there would be less war.
I am wanting to get some buff orpington chicks in july, are they a good breed? do you recomend them? I used to have rhode island reds growing up,and my husband and I want our daughter,(And another on the way,due christmas day :)to experience the country life with chickens :) Thanks Jess,
thats amazing that you an let all your chickens, chicks and cockerels out together and they dont fight, or pick on the chicks. i could never trust my chickens to do that when i have chicks. great video.
btw I've a question . do all hens get broody ? you see ,I've heard that some special colors or breeds don't get broody ever during their life though they keep having eggs . eh ? is it right ?
Podchef this is fabulous. I may need it in my coming struggle with city hall to make chickens legal here. They busted me two civic elections ago, but the person who thought she'd make points didn't get re-elected.
Wise comments.
There's a group in England who arrange adoptions for battery hens when they reach week 52. Instead of slaughter they get picnics in back yards. Some last as long as 7 more years.
AWESOME.. I Love it... looking for this video i came across the horrid things that happen to "factory" chickens, I will never eat chicken again especially KFC.. is organic raised humanely?
Some organic chicken is raised humanely. Some is factory farmed.
The best thing you can do is go to your local Farmer's market and speak with anyone selling chickens there. Ask them how they raise their chickens. Pasture raised chickens are the best option. Free Range doesn't really mean all that it implies.
Many producers raise nearly, as-good-as, or "beyond organic" products but just don't want to or can't afford to pay for the "Organic" standards labels and inspection.
My Bantam Rooster LOVES watching this video and crowing in response to the other roosters in the background... he seems so happy. This is how we entertain our little friend on rainy days in Hawaii!
The whole point of that part of the video--if you watch closely--is that the momma hen is breaking apart "her" food for her babies--no chick starter necessary. After all what would chickens ever have done without LandOLakes or Cargill. . . ?
Chicks raised this way thrive. I've been raising incubated eggs, and hen brooded clutches for years--there's a big difference.
The silly hens raised a joint clutch, which they had both sat on in the same nesting box, together. Now that the chicks are grown they're still looking after them together. . . .

Yes. I am sure if you look in the area there are poultry clubs and others who can give you advice.

So did the two hens both have her own clutch? Or were they raising them together?
