What bugs me the most is that if I get a T-shirt stamped with that spider symbol, people will mistake me for a Prodigy fanboy, instead of an actual band fanboy.
After so many years, and so many listens, this is still one of my favorite songs. Geordie's finespun lead, Raven's punctuating bass, Big Paul's robust rhythms and Jaz's lucid declamation will always keep this a cut above the rest!
I always liked that K.J. pulled ideas from Native and Celtic culture. A thinking man's punk band.
Notice the Celtic tattooed priestess in the video for "fire dances".
This was real, in some tribes these women had great power as they would ritually stab the king when he became too old to sire more children. They were said to be tattooed from head to toe. Jazz knows his culture more than most do.
Jeremy "Jaz" Coleman (born 26 February 1960, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England) is a musician, composer, singer-songwriter and record producer. He is notable for his vocal contributions to post-punk/metal/industrial band Killing Joke.
@bizznych The Orb was mainly Alex Patterson, who was one of Killing Joke's roadies and a friend of their original bass player ('Youth') before The Orb was formed. He isn't Jazz's brother!
What a brilliant band! The '80's produced so many great bands that Killing Joke sometimes got lost in the scene. They never really got the credit they deserved.
i love their messages and videos!!! if there is anything like this now... meaning any new bands that sound like this and have a message and make videos like this! (not necessarily just this particular song just like killing joke pre-pandemonium stuff like "the eighties") please someone tell me! : ) i need new REAL music! e.mail me!
Killing Joke along with some other bands (The Stranglers come to mind) truely forged a path thru the muck (of punk and New Wave) and came up with gems like A New Day, Eighties, and their magnum opus Love Like Blood (all with great accompanying videos). Very little today matches up to the primitive, visceral, and raw atmospheric sounds.
The old method of combining stock footage with staged footage. I beleive that Devo did that first in their 'Beutiful World video ( or thats the earliest video I've seen to use it anyway ). Some of the stock bits were very well chosen and cool, like of the animal wildlife, the ancient statues and that animation with the witch, those were all awesome images wich realy complimented the music well. But other bits I'm not so sure about, like the two little japanese children and the plane flying.
They are goegraphic formations, man made, that are visible only from high altitude. The tech term is geoglyph which means ordered formation of earth (dirt). What makes them so interesting is that they'e been carbon dated to some point 150 yrs BC to 700 AD. The fact that carbon dating, which is usually rather accurate (give or take a half century), fails here leads to debate over the existence of life not from our planet. Whoever thumbed me down - get bent.
No. I do not say that because I'm trying to be rude; I say it because research - to my mind - is the best way learn something new. You can 'wiki' it if you like or search the web. Once you see the photos you will recognize instantly the symbol on that guys (don't have a clue what his name is) shirt.
Flying Christ!? You've got a keyboard, right? Do a frickin' google search or check out the Guiness World Record website or ANY other research-based site and search for NAZCA lines. I said wiki 'cause it's known and yeah - as a teacher I'm REQUIRED to know that Wiki is not a valid source, I don't let my students cite it ever. Christ you're like a sophomore on a power trip.
With all DUE respect, I don't think someone who lists Nickleback and Corey Hart in their favorites has any business trying to define what was cool in the 1980s.
This is a very nice tune, its a shame the sound its not the best. :) Brought me a lot of memories though.

Jaz Coleman was very good in this video also. Not only is he a damn fine vocalist but he's also very emotive. A real presence.
