If sounds don't work for you, like most NPC sounds and background ambience and music, you can go into the 'base source engine 2' GCF file and move Scripts into the Portal installation folder along with the other two folders you extracted in there.

It stops the portal sounds from working for some reason, but everything else will work perfectly. I'll have a look and see if something in the scripts folder conflicts with hearing the portal sounds.

The Portal gun fits this description. as we saw in portal we could only create portals on specific surfaces. It looks to me like we will get a portal gun but will have limited use of it. If you have payed attention to what I have written, there is a good chance that a portal gun will be involved in the next half life.
