different mentality.reality TV is looked down in the EU, the art world is super uppity in europe.you have to be able to paint well and wax lyrics about your own work , be able to defend and be able to promote it in your own niche. This show is not that bad cos there are a few things that I discovered there . I am an artist myself.
@port44life...Indeed! Abdi is very gifted and has a great, creative mind. Hoping he will continue to grow and experiment in his work. Wow!! And to never let anyone feel he is less because he was on a tv show. TV helped bring him to attention (a blessing in a world that closes the door in our faces so much-I'm an artist too), but his artist mind was always already there.
SOMALIA!!! Good to see the great side of Somali people amidst the ugliness that is portrayed about them today and historically. Great job ABDI! I hope your work and your life continues to focus on people and situations; example the Tuskegee piece, and helping your people in Somalia as well.... inshaAllah! peace
Congratulations, Abdi! I would so like to visit the Brooklyn Museum to see this in person! You absolutely deserve the win! Fabulous and compelling work.
Great job Abdi! I didnt think much of his last pieces at first, but it fell into place like a masterpiece puzzle. The 3 dimensional work and portraits left me thinking of all the meanings it could have on a monumental level considering the Haiti catastrophe and also on a less significant level of his sheer creativity. He deserved it.
it frustrates me to see such ridiculous responses like the ones below. as a viewer i would like to congratulate abdi. Yes he is young but still very talented. And i feel people have no right to judge his work/ imagination.....Unless they've also won a reality art contest!!!!
i can't believe such a mediocre talent has been deemed "the next great artist". they'd already made political allowances for jaclyn and the typical narcissism she played off as social commentary, but even her work said more than abdi's. his voice is contrived and boring. he has little imagination. he's less than brilliant.
Boo. He was one of the worst contestants on the show and I am absolutely dumbfounded by the fact that he won. This work is so terribly cliche, banal, underwhelming... I can't think of enough negative adjectives to describe it. How is uploading pictures to Photoshop, negating the colors, and then painting it as is some sort of artistic breakthrough worthy of 100k and a solo show at a world-renowned museum? Jaclyn or Peregrine should have won. Case closed.
@lessonsoftoday I understand why you don't think Abdi should've won. But Jaclyn, really? All of her work was self-centered and pathetic. I think Perrigryn should've won and I also think she will eventually be more successful than all of the other contestants as time progresses. Her work is original and it is also has the ability to get an emotional reaction from the viewer. That is what art is made to do.
@erinaphobia That is a really old concept of what art's function is. Emotions are kinda cliched seeing as everyone has them. Ideas is where art today is focused, ideas are the basis of conceptual art. A new idea can make a person think in much less limited ways instead of being left with emotional upchuck flowing in a loop.

HE didn't lay out his own work!? I thought this was a contemporary art museum not a local arts council.
