  • 2:25 Best scene of the movie! That smile...oh god. :D I'm in love with Mr.Tinley.

  • I prefer the one shes dancing with; the one looking at looks like hes got more than looks on his mind. "A clergyman?" Theres nothing wrong with Clergymen; look at Edmund Bertram.

  • the blond weirdo looks like a pervert.

  • bahaha "I must give you one smirk..." Makes creepy elf face

  • Mrs. Allen, in her own way, actually gets who Mr. Tilney is rather than her husband. Sad that it was so important to find out who any young man was who danced with a girl in case of prospects. A real marriage market but for people of marrying ages, what else could they do? If they wanted to marry well they had to branch out from their own town so Bath was a big thing. They only had so many seasons to find someone. Imagine trying to put on your best face as quickly as possible.

  • because no scoundrel could possibly have a sister or understand muslin

  • @JaneEyre29 Obviously..... :)

  • oh, they had to be introduced first! lol - polite society. perhaps that is why i find this era so interesting. they are the total opposite of me.

  • lol she does have a journal.

  • Ewwwww, a clergyman??? bwahahahah, she would prefer a brigand, I know I would! lol

  • @aeo2608 Clergyman is kind of a traditional thing in Jane Austen

  • I love Mr. Henry Tilney! He is such a flirt! J.J. Field channels him well off the page!

  • I love this novel because of the humor the two main characters use - more pronounced than other Jane Austen's stuff. Yay!!

  • I love mr. Tilney..I always have to smile when he smiles..he looks so funny when he smiles<3

  • he understands MUSLIN, Mr. Allam. Yes, that changes everything!

  • He's Muslim?

  • @stevesanterre Muslin dear, not muslim.. tho.. me, i am muslim..

  • Henry Tilney isn't my favorite Austen romantic leading guy, but he's definitely an interesting character for Austen to have decided to write. In her other books, much of the time (though not always, by any means), men who came across so amiable and good humored at first, later were revealed to be no good, or to have been hiding something (whether it be something bad or not), so it's nice that she decided to write a character like that, who actually is as they seem to be.

  • I was wondering if anyone knows who the composer of the beautiful music is K and H dance to?

  • H:Ready? K: Yes. H:How long have you been in Bath Madam? K: Not long at all Sir! H: Were you never here before? K: Never Sir! H: Indeed! Have you been at a play? K: Not yet Sir H: Astonishing! Concert? K: No! H: Amazing! Now tell me, are you all together pleased with Bath Madam? K: Yes! I like it very well H: Excelent. Now I must give you ONE smirk, and then we can be rational again. LOL! I love their chemistry. Another amazing Jane Austen couple that I have fallen deeply in love with :-)
  • "He understands muslin!" Yeah, that's a good argument xD

  • Um Henry Tilney is hot hot hot and that other guy (I'm assuming John Thorpe) is gross gross gross!

  • rite..soo creepy!!

  • ...danced with one man and stared at by another, much more handsome...perhaps I don't keep a journal at all.

  • He understands MUSLIN!!!!

  • I ADORE the way Tilney smiles at Catherine <3

  • I can't help smiling when I see her writing in her diary, after she says she might not even have one. :)

  • I totally see Jude Law as Mr. Tilney

  • @cero90 Yes! I've just been thinking that.

  • AM I the only 1 who thinks that those dances they dance are so lame....in cinderela and other movies dances are so more romantic.....:PPP

  • It's Kitty!

  • He's eyes remind me of Robert Downey and his stature reminds me of Jude Law. What a combination of Holmes and Dr. Watson in a man! Such rarity! ^_^

  • "Indeed, Astonishing, Amazzzing, now tell me, are you altogether pleased with Bath madam..." Yes, I like you (Mr. Tilney) very well. "EXCELLENT." I love this man, where can I get one?

  • I love Tilney's smirk and his teasing Catherine while they are dancing. J.J Field and Felicity Jones have become my Henry and Catherine. I actually prefer this version to the 1981 one.

  • Mr. Darcy had a sister too

  • I like these adaptations, but they usually make the annoying people less annoying than they are in the book and more understanding (i.e. Mrs. Allen), and Austen was so good at creating unlikeable people that I don't like to like them, haha.

  • i think she was having an orgy

  • oh look! 8 people have horrible taste...either that or they missed the "like" button

  • "He has a sister!" haha

Because when you have a sister you must be a good person :)

  • @GegoStuff or available......as the case may be ;)

  • The level of adorable in this movie is too much to handle. Agh! Just look at them smile!

  • the intense staring is so creeptastic....

  • Ugh, Mr, Tilney, why you no exist?

  • I love watching Jane Austen adaptations because the films are wonderful, of course, but the comments are so nice and civil! No trolls, no insults, just nice girls and guys swooning over quality programming...purrr...

  • Love that dance at 15 secs.

  • Is it just me or does anyone else remind Mr Tilney of Jude Law?

  • @jenberja definatly

  • @jenberja I had the same feeling all along

  • MR TILNEY EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Definitely my favorite Austen hero.

  • "...Why not?" Mr Tilney is lovely!!

  • Mr Tilney's got Lee pace's face and stature with Jake Gyllenhaal's smile and attitude. Lovely!

  • he understands "Muslin", Mr. Allen!

  • "I imagine he likes what he sees." "What? Do you mean me?" "Why not?" I absolutely adore this film.

  • for goodness sake mr. allen, he understands muslin

  • What a weird way to get aroused...

  • Their first dance is my favorite part of the whole movie I can't help but grin with her at his teasing

  • The only instance in which I can say I enjoyed the film over the novel. Not to say I didn't care for it! I did. I believe JJ Feild is largely to blame for my favoring the movie. He breathed life into Mr. Henry Tilney! Dreamy, dreamy actor with an infectious smile and pleasing voice. /melts

  • I prefer the dancing back then at parties then the dancing at parties today =)

  • "Astonishing!" "Amazing!"

    God, I love Tilney.

  • "...danced with one man, and stared at by another, much more handsome..."

Much more handsome?!? I don't think so!

  • @AVBKansas ya your right!

  • Nice dream.

  • I love Catherine

    she a rlly special character ! <3

  • Mr. Tilney is remarkably charming and attractive despite the fact that he is looking down on the world in general.

  • i love henry's smile!! too cute!!

  • @bekahlu well her name is carey mulligan, she was in the wall street movie, an education, and the 2005 p&p movie (as mentioned below)

  • @bekahlu she played as Kitty Bennet in the movie Pride and Prejudice (2005) :)

  • ahh to live in those days....

  • I'd enjoy getting all dolled up for something like this, just for fun. I'd have to leave the dancing to others, though. I'd just like to watch. And drink punch. And eat some dainties. And chatter in a fake british accent!

  • "Northanger Abbey? Is it haunted?" Love it.

  • The actor that plays Henry Tilney ........I want him,hes absolutely adorable. ( drool!)

  • Mr Allan is soo funny, Mr Tilney is soooo adorable!!

  • i dont rly c the hotness in mr.tilney........ maybe its the less-than-good quality. :/

  • oh how i wish there were more men like Mr Tilney today in our world!!!!!! The world would be a better place hahaha!!!!!!!!!! ^_^

  • Mr. Tilney makes the most amazing expressions when he wants to. :)

  • Mr Allan is such a tease :D

My favorite character so far xD

  • Oh how I love his smile...

  • Mr. Tilney makes my heart smile!! :)

  • While I adore Mr. Darcy, I always thought Captain Wentworth would have my heart forever but Mr. Tilney is just so...swoon worthy *sigh*.

  • I used to think I couldn't love any Austen man as much as Darcy.....Oh how I do hate to be wrong :)

  • Finally! Someone dancing Childgrove (or any English country dance) properly!

  • @Lyricfreakful yesss!!! indeed :)

  • Catherine some what irritates me, but I think I'll learn to like her, it's only the third part...

  • I have felt like Catherine in my life. I am also the eldest of four, and viewed anyone over the age of 21 to be 'quite grown up' and never saw myself as such until just recently when I realized one afternoon that I was, in fact, 23 and 'quite grown up' myself.

  • Ah yes, Mr. Tilney (sigh) I love how playful and happy he is. And that crooked little smile paired with that smolder thing he does with his eyes... now THAT would make any girl weak at the knees ; )

  • Henry Tilney is the definition of amazing :)

  • i prefer this version to that of the book

  • "I must give you one smirk and then we can be rational again." Does anyone else melt? :) Henry Tilney is amazing.

  • @GaaraIsSmexyful Not only did I melt, but I also believe I might have giggled a bit like a school girl

  • @GaaraIsSmexyful OMG, I don't believe love exists anymore and I'm down right cold but that totally made my heart melt and made my face smile!

  • Very nice acting, I can feel as though these characters are more believable than other Jane Austen characters who are much refined. Well done!

  • I am only fourteen minutes into this story, having never read the book nor seen the film, and I am already head-over-heels in love with Mr. Tilney.

  • Please, does anybody know name of the song, that start at 0:10????

  • I like the relationship between Henry and Catherine.

It is much more playful than any other Austen relationships

  • I like those little 'gothic romance' scenes they show. Who hasn't let their imagination wander like that now and then? ;)

  • mmm I dare say that she is like Darias sister, Queen, who say "oh please don't fight for me" with a smile (Daria is a MTV cartoon that I really like)

  • He looks a bit like Jude Law :)

  • @anniexan yes, Jude Law mixed with Lee Pace from Pushing Daisies and that new movie where Owen Wilson plays the voice of a dog....

  • @LeahRT Oh you're right. I was wondering who else he looked like :D

  • Henry understands muslin that is completely enough for Mrs Allen xD

  • i love wen henry does that smirk!! <3

  • wow.. he reminds me so much of jude law :) <3

  • xD her fantasy is running around freely xDD it is sooo funny to look at the things she is thinking of xD her own, little and absolute funny stories xD

  • Ah, Henry Tilney ♥

At last, an Austen man who isn't depressed, severe or ridiculously moody! :)

  • What's with everyone wanting their own Edward Cullen nowadays?????

Henry Tilney is what it's all about!!

  • i wish people still danced like they did back then... everytime I watch an austen film I always can't wait for the ball scenes because I just love the way they dance in groups like that! I would so love to dance in those times!

  • @chipmunkkk3 you can still do that:) i was in england for one year and there were so called "barndances":) they were quite similar and it was so much fun!XD

  • @chipmunkkk3 have you ever tried contra dancing? You should, if you live in the us--it was based on english country dancing and was brought over here by settlers.

  • 2:09 The blond gentlemen is a creepy troll.

  • I wonder, how is it in all of these movies that the girls (who come from very modest backgrounds) know ALL of the dances. Did they all learn these dances regardless of their station? I ask because I honestly do not know.

  • @armageddonff This answer was given below by "beevan19" : "They learned the steps as children, and you put them to many different types of dances. no different than learning a jig, a barcarolle, a prelude etc".

and i'll add that in some plain familys were the parents considered it important enough they wold hire a dancing instructor for there children, but of course not in all familys, some were just too poor. in higher classes all children laerned to dance as well as other social practices.

  • I like Henry! He is so funny and he's different from most of Jane Austen's heroes and I like Catherine Morlan too!!!

  • well,well....so you do have a diary, you little sly lass...

  • I reckon Mr Tilney is the sort of guy we can hope exists in our world. Certainly there ain't no Darcy's anymore sniff.

Catherine is just adorable, she's so likeable.=D

  • This is one of my all times fav movie.....the only book i really like from Jane Austen sigh gosh i really do wish that i lived during that time, everything was soo poetic....(sigh) ...lol

  • @blacknwhiteworld Me too. And so polite!

  • Bah, forget Darcy! I'll take a Tilney any day.

  • if only we held balls such as these...oh what i would give to be able to relive this era...but damn Catherine for dreaming her to be such damsel in distress in every fantasy scene.

  • Mr Tilney a scoundrel?! he understands MUSLIN

haha like a good taste in clothes settles it lol

  • @vivimaze yeah! and a sister! lol

  • their dances were walking and skipping in a pattern(lol!), but they are nicer than ours.

We have the 'soldier boy' dance...

    -_-;

  • haha i totally laughed at the smirk part during the dance.

  • I think that these movies also give a very romantic air to what actually might have been a very stuffy smelly room...the reality of those times wasnt as awesome as they portray in these movies...however I do wish I was there! hahaha

  • yeah, sweaty crowded and hot, with excessive perfumes would be slightly nauseating but I agree, wish I was there lol

  • who is that creep giving her the stank eye??

  • I just fell in love with Mr. Tinley...

  • northanger abbey...

    'is it haunted?'

LOL.....catherine just SENSED the substance of the things:D....

  • I have to say, I indeed like Mr. Tilney more than Mr. Darcy. Oh dear me! LOL.

  • As much as it hurts me to say this i like mr.tilney better than i like mr.darcy. o god what have i come to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ah i love this novel. and YES, tilney is GREAT.

  • "He understands lace...!" LOL

  • I wish people still danced this way, it looks really fun.

  • I know, now it's all "bump and grind"...yuck.

  • Some groups are springing up that do!

I've done it. It is super fun!!!!

  • Henry Tilney is very good looking. i like his character more than Darcy and Wentworth.

  • i just finished reading the book today. Henry Tilney makes me want to melt.

  • @bleep111 He DOES make me melt! so...frickin'...seeeexxxxyyy....

  • what did isabella whisper to catherine?

  • i love this scene:) and the movie too...i've just finished the book today and it's amazing too. i love jane austen's works:)

and jj is so adorable...just like mr tilney:) his smile...oh good...*melting on the floor* im in love with him...seriously:D

  • YOU LIKE MR TILNEY MORE THAN DARCY??? THAT'S...THAT's... I just have no words for it! Shame on you!

-Please don't be offensed, I was just kidding xD

    P.S: srry 4 bad English

  • I've never met a pastor like Mr. Tilney.

  • Comment removed

  • tilney and catharine are so adorable :)

  • I love his "smirk".

  • dancing looked so fucking easy back then, no rhythm necessary.

  • Your card not already full?

You mean you had to prearrange a dance?

Very unique way of doing things, i like it.

  • Women had dance cards..if a man wanted to dance with a lady..he had to arrange for her to put him on her card.

  • LOL, that's kind of like "take a number"

  • how does everybody know how to dance? is it some kind of instinctive knowledge or were there square dance teachers that traveled up and down the country?

  • Unless somebody else has answered you. They learned the steps as children, and you put them to many different types of dances. no different than learning a jig, a barcarolle, a prelude etc.

  • Does anybody know what is the name of the tune that begins in 0:10?

  • @elishlomo It's called Childgrove. It's a beautiful tune, isn't it?

  • @ultimavaraThanks a lot, yes it is an amazing tune, soft and tender. god bless.

  • I love watching this kind of films. This film is one of my favorite. Please write if you have some addresses of similar films. thanks

  • @zaljubljenka I love it too, Here are some of my favorites, cpoy and paste the way i wrote them:

Sense And Sensibility - Part 1/14

    persuasion 2007 part 1

    Jane Eyre 2006 Episode 1 Part 1

David Copperfield by Charles Dickens 1/18

Jane Austen's "Emma" part 1(Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong )

    enjoy !

  • yes you MUST watch Persuasion. Captain Wentworth is so handsome :)

  • cool

  • pride and prejudice, emma 2009, mansfield park, to add to the list below

  • This is just about one of the greatest Adaptations of a Jane Austen novel. It really keeps you watching and the cast are nearly perfect.

  • oh, if more men were like Mr. Tilney. he's just so adorable

  • I do love the actor they chose for Mr. Tinley because he not only is hot (my opinon) he is also relaxed and makes her laugh.

  • perhaps this is the most funny novel by jane austen...

  • i love her books

and the movies based on them

  • Dancing in circles...

    Great...

  • their dialogue while they're dancing is so funny!

  • Mr Tilney reminds me of Ned from Pushing Dasies :)

  • This is a good adaptation, but they cut some of my favorite lines! In the book, when Catherine says that perhaps she doesn't keep a journal, Henry replies "Perhaps you are not sitting in this room, and I am not sitting with you. Those are points in which a doubt is equally possible." Catherine's line doesn't really fit without Henry's answering joke. And they cut some other hilarious lines from that conversation, too.

  • i find it strange how two young people could not speak without being somebody introducing them. consider a popular modern form of meet someone is rubbing up against them hehe

  • 2:36 cutest smile ever!

  • This movie is adorable.

  • anyone else agree that henry Tinleys voice is like heaven?

  • definetly

  • @Lyricfreakful henry tilney is the man!! his voice is like silk:D

  • @RonWorshipper aye it is. :)
