I prefer the one shes dancing with; the one looking at looks like hes got more than looks on his mind. "A clergyman?" Theres nothing wrong with Clergymen; look at Edmund Bertram.
Mrs. Allen, in her own way, actually gets who Mr. Tilney is rather than her husband. Sad that it was so important to find out who any young man was who danced with a girl in case of prospects. A real marriage market but for people of marrying ages, what else could they do? If they wanted to marry well they had to branch out from their own town so Bath was a big thing. They only had so many seasons to find someone. Imagine trying to put on your best face as quickly as possible.
Henry Tilney isn't my favorite Austen romantic leading guy, but he's definitely an interesting character for Austen to have decided to write. In her other books, much of the time (though not always, by any means), men who came across so amiable and good humored at first, later were revealed to be no good, or to have been hiding something (whether it be something bad or not), so it's nice that she decided to write a character like that, who actually is as they seem to be.
H:Ready? K: Yes. H:How long have you been in Bath Madam? K: Not long at all Sir! H: Were you never here before? K: Never Sir! H: Indeed! Have you been at a play? K: Not yet Sir H: Astonishing! Concert? K: No! H: Amazing! Now tell me, are you all together pleased with Bath Madam? K: Yes! I like it very well H: Excelent. Now I must give you ONE smirk, and then we can be rational again. LOL! I love their chemistry. Another amazing Jane Austen couple that I have fallen deeply in love with :-)
"Indeed, Astonishing, Amazzzing, now tell me, are you altogether pleased with Bath madam..." Yes, I like you (Mr. Tilney) very well. "EXCELLENT." I love this man, where can I get one?
I love Tilney's smirk and his teasing Catherine while they are dancing. J.J Field and Felicity Jones have become my Henry and Catherine. I actually prefer this version to the 1981 one.
I like these adaptations, but they usually make the annoying people less annoying than they are in the book and more understanding (i.e. Mrs. Allen), and Austen was so good at creating unlikeable people that I don't like to like them, haha.
I love watching Jane Austen adaptations because the films are wonderful, of course, but the comments are so nice and civil! No trolls, no insults, just nice girls and guys swooning over quality programming...purrr...
The only instance in which I can say I enjoyed the film over the novel. Not to say I didn't care for it! I did. I believe JJ Feild is largely to blame for my favoring the movie. He breathed life into Mr. Henry Tilney! Dreamy, dreamy actor with an infectious smile and pleasing voice. /melts
I'd enjoy getting all dolled up for something like this, just for fun. I'd have to leave the dancing to others, though. I'd just like to watch. And drink punch. And eat some dainties. And chatter in a fake british accent!
I have felt like Catherine in my life. I am also the eldest of four, and viewed anyone over the age of 21 to be 'quite grown up' and never saw myself as such until just recently when I realized one afternoon that I was, in fact, 23 and 'quite grown up' myself.
Ah yes, Mr. Tilney (sigh) I love how playful and happy he is. And that crooked little smile paired with that smolder thing he does with his eyes... now THAT would make any girl weak at the knees ; )
xD her fantasy is running around freely xDD it is sooo funny to look at the things she is thinking of xD her own, little and absolute funny stories xD
i wish people still danced like they did back then... everytime I watch an austen film I always can't wait for the ball scenes because I just love the way they dance in groups like that! I would so love to dance in those times!
@chipmunkkk3 you can still do that:) i was in england for one year and there were so called "barndances":) they were quite similar and it was so much fun!XD
@chipmunkkk3 have you ever tried contra dancing? You should, if you live in the us--it was based on english country dancing and was brought over here by settlers.
I wonder, how is it in all of these movies that the girls (who come from very modest backgrounds) know ALL of the dances. Did they all learn these dances regardless of their station? I ask because I honestly do not know.
@armageddonff This answer was given below by "beevan19" : "They learned the steps as children, and you put them to many different types of dances. no different than learning a jig, a barcarolle, a prelude etc".
and i'll add that in some plain familys were the parents considered it important enough they wold hire a dancing instructor for there children, but of course not in all familys, some were just too poor. in higher classes all children laerned to dance as well as other social practices.
This is one of my all times fav movie.....the only book i really like from Jane Austen sigh gosh i really do wish that i lived during that time, everything was soo poetic....(sigh) ...lol
if only we held balls such as these...oh what i would give to be able to relive this era...but damn Catherine for dreaming her to be such damsel in distress in every fantasy scene.
I think that these movies also give a very romantic air to what actually might have been a very stuffy smelly room...the reality of those times wasnt as awesome as they portray in these movies...however I do wish I was there! hahaha
how does everybody know how to dance? is it some kind of instinctive knowledge or were there square dance teachers that traveled up and down the country?
Unless somebody else has answered you. They learned the steps as children, and you put them to many different types of dances. no different than learning a jig, a barcarolle, a prelude etc.
This is a good adaptation, but they cut some of my favorite lines! In the book, when Catherine says that perhaps she doesn't keep a journal, Henry replies "Perhaps you are not sitting in this room, and I am not sitting with you. Those are points in which a doubt is equally possible." Catherine's line doesn't really fit without Henry's answering joke. And they cut some other hilarious lines from that conversation, too.
i find it strange how two young people could not speak without being somebody introducing them. consider a popular modern form of meet someone is rubbing up against them hehe
2:25 Best scene of the movie! That smile...oh god. :D I'm in love with Mr.Tinley.
