Hey guys, here's the scoop. They weren't actually blood related. Lesley's father had someone switch the babies when Laura was born and Lesley was told she died. Amy's parents got Laura and raised her until she was 14 when Lesley found out the truth and got her back. Then Amy's parents both eventually died and Lesley and Rick took her in. So, technically, they were always raised as sisters but are not blood related at all.
Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know the part about Lesley's father. That is interesting, and the missing piece that makes the whole thing makes sense. Thanks.

I don't know how much detail was explained when all of this came out , but I do know that Lesley had an affair with one of her professors and I think her father feared that she wouldn't go on to be a doctor if she had the baby so he told her the baby died. I think,Laura may have actually been younger than 14 when it first came out. Rick helped her get Laura back and that's how they fell in love, which makes the destruction of them even worse. Why couldn't they just reunite them?
They actually were raised as sisters. I am not sure if they were both adopted... they lived together as sisters until Laura came to live with Lesley at about 14 I think... but I do not believe they were biological sisters come to think of it.
