@jtwidmer Yeah, except for the fact that rap is poetry and not music. To be music, a song needs more than just a beat; it needs melody which rap does not provide. And as lyrics hold no musical value, rap cannot be called music. Also, metal is the genre with by far the most concentrated musical talent. So why would you even bother with other genres if you want to listen to consistantly good music.
@Gattstaichou1 Metal has certainly got an amazing amount of talent, maybe not as much as jazz (Pat Methany, Al di Meola, Paco De Lucia, etc) but its certainly incredible. However, I honestly think that to say 'in order to be music it has to have x y and z' is a huge mistake. take melody, ok what kind of melody? because rap certainly has melody in the samples. And the rapper talks without melody, but a lot of metal guys scream without melody as well. (old Cannibal Corpse for instance).
@jtwidmer Yes, jazz probably is more talented by average player because jazz players are more likely to have actual training, unlike most screamo bands, but until I see a guitarist better than Yngwie outside metal, metal wins. About the melody, some samples are good, but not if they're repeated for 3 minutes. Depth and variety are needed. A song with only a chorus and a 4 chord progression is not good unless the singer is great with vocal harmony. And yes screaming rarely adds melody.
@Gattstaichou1 You really should check out Al di Meola. Amazing. See though, this is what I mean, at first it was just melody required to qualify as music, now its a certain depth/variety you're saying is needed. Ok, well who decides when there is enough depth/variety? How many separate parts are needed in one song to have it? BTBAM, Sikth, those guys have like 20 parts per song where as AILD has say, 6 or 7. So is one more 'music' than the other? Of course not.
Respond to this video... And I think its a bad idea to say who is better than the other guitar wise. Yngwie is amazing sure, but he bores me after a few songs. Buckethead, Satriani, Eric Johnson, John Scoffield, Tom Morello, Danny Carrey, Larry Carlton. All these guys I enjoy way more than Yngwie, even though they don't do 6 string 2 octave sweeps all the time at 250 BPM. i just think its a bad idea to decide which music to like based on difficulty and complexity.

@NixonTragedy I watched the whole documentary on AILD several times and Tim said himself that he did the cleans on Shadows are Security because Clint's voice was not powerful enough for the studio.

@jtwidmer Yeah, except for the fact that rap is poetry and not music. To be music, a song needs more than just a beat; it needs melody which rap does not provide. And as lyrics hold no musical value, rap cannot be called music. Also, metal is the genre with by far the most concentrated musical talent. So why would you even bother with other genres if you want to listen to consistantly good music.

@Gattstaichou1 Metal has certainly got an amazing amount of talent, maybe not as much as jazz (Pat Methany, Al di Meola, Paco De Lucia, etc) but its certainly incredible. However, I honestly think that to say 'in order to be music it has to have x y and z' is a huge mistake. take melody, ok what kind of melody? because rap certainly has melody in the samples. And the rapper talks without melody, but a lot of metal guys scream without melody as well. (old Cannibal Corpse for instance).

@jtwidmer Yes, jazz probably is more talented by average player because jazz players are more likely to have actual training, unlike most screamo bands, but until I see a guitarist better than Yngwie outside metal, metal wins. About the melody, some samples are good, but not if they're repeated for 3 minutes. Depth and variety are needed. A song with only a chorus and a 4 chord progression is not good unless the singer is great with vocal harmony. And yes screaming rarely adds melody.

See though, this is what I mean, at first it was just melody required to qualify as music, now its a certain depth/variety you're saying is needed. Ok, well who decides when there is enough depth/variety? How many separate parts are needed in one song to have it? BTBAM, Sikth, those guys have like 20 parts per song where as AILD has say, 6 or 7. So is one more 'music' than the other? Of course not.

Respond to this video... And I think its a bad idea to say who is better than the other guitar wise. Yngwie is amazing sure, but he bores me after a few songs. Buckethead, Satriani, Eric Johnson, John Scoffield, Tom Morello, Danny Carrey, Larry Carlton. All these guys I enjoy way more than Yngwie, even though they don't do 6 string 2 octave sweeps all the time at 250 BPM. i just think its a bad idea to decide which music to like based on difficulty and complexity.

If a metalcore song has noble,or even doctrinally sound lyrics, Christians today think it must be OK, since no one could ever communicate sound doctrine in a way that is ungodly, right? Wrong. God, through Paul, commands pastor Titus to teach CONDUCT, (attitudes & actions) that are FITTING for sound doctrine. Metalcore music glorifies rebellion & anarchy. The music–not just the lyrics, is in your face, aggressive, & loud. Is a medium that reflects anger & rebellion, glorifying to God?

@xRushBlade I'm christian, but now I believe in no church such as catholic or protestant, I simply believe in God and Jesus. I'm not the best son God has, but neither am I the worst. Metal is just a form of expression, and it can be used to glorify a deity. I personally like the lyrics but I don't let them get into me, so I pretty much listen to Black metal, death metal and metal core without a problem. It's just my PoV really.

Whats up with people hating on Rap music over here? And for the measurement, the music on tv you hear is NOT rap. That is called POP music. And with those I mean people like Drake, Lil Wayne and other bullshit musicians.
Real Rap music stays underground just like real Metal/Rock. Just be open for other music styles and don't stereotype one genre because an artist on TV claims to be making Rap music. Me for example, I can enjoy EVERY music. Metalcore is my favourite, but Rap is my 2nd.
