Well, the cineasts did, like me and (probably) you. Children and average movie goers do not know 2001. These people think HSM, Harry Potter, Narnia, Dark Knight, etc. are the only great movies on this planet. This is not a kid's movie anyway, it's too artful to have entertainment value for a younger audience. This is a masterpiece and the the homage with HAL/Auto is just fantastic. Also the main theme "Also sprach Zathrusta" is played.
