I do understand why they are doing it cause there are a lot of freight trains that have K5LA's so they want to sound different most likely for track worker's so they now who is on the track at night so they no how quickly they'd need to move out of the way if they are on that track
This horn is pretty gross! The overplaying 5 bell, the bad 4a bell and bad diaphragm ruin it! It has a bad pitch! I really wish CSX and NS would stop sticking these BS horns on their new rebuild engines, and on engines that already have perfectly good horns. CSX 339 is an excellent example! It had one heck of a nice K5LAR-24, then they stuck one of these friggin' things on it! Why? Do they want their engines to put out such ugly noise pollution? Get rid of them....
Also forgot to mention, a few CSXT locomotives as well as the NS SD40E locomotives that are used for helper service on the Pittsburgh Line also have this horn.
Interesting horn... almost sounds like a cross between a K5LA and a P5... strange tuning on the bugles. But even so, it's always great to see (and hear!) Amtrak rolling through Lockport! This is a great close-up capture!
I've never heard a K5LA tuned that way before. In fact, has more of a "fouled" sound to it. And way too harsh. Don't get me wrong, it's a unique sound and neat in its own way, but I like the traditional "sweet" K5LA sound much better.
I learned that horn is a 3rd generation K5LA and AMTK 98 is the 1st ever P42 that have that horn, If I'm correct, that's what some CSX Locomotives are starting to use as well. Doesn't sound awful, but of course, older is better. Good catch, Nic.
SUPERB SOUND!!!

Nice catch, but I HATE those new 3rd Generation K5LA's. Its a disgrace to Amtrak and all railroads that have them. Good vid though there in Lockport.

I caught this engine yestderday, on Amtrak 19 here in Bham, ALA heading to New Orleans. I thought I would never see that engine, and nice vid.

To be fair, it sounds a bit like an E60P horn, if you think about it. Cool catch. :)

The horn has a cool sound, but the older ones definitely sound better. This K5LA sounds like it's trying too hard to be a newer K5HLL.
Nice video, though, I really enjoy your Lockport videos, especially the Amtrak ones!

Great job, as always!

I like it! It kind of sounds more like the K5LA's on the Dash 8's. Good shot!

@NWPhotographyDirect I know that even NS has them too. Amtk P42's 6 and 205 also have the 3rd generation K5LA.

@lawpar79 Yeah. As far as I know, AMTK 114 and 129 also have the 3rd Generation K5LA. And yes, NS and also CSX have them as well.

@NWPhotographyDirect I didn't know CSX has it, but I only knew AMTK and NS had the 3rd generation K5LA
