I was an 80's kid through and through. Started high school in 1981 and graduated from college in 1989. Other than leg warmers, Ronald Reagan, and big hair (guys and girls), I thought it was a pretty cool time. This song was on one of many mix tapes I made; that particular one for dates. Had a turn table, a double cassette deck, later buttressed by a CD player. Borrowed friends' albums and their older brothers' albums. This album, however, I owned outright. Those were indeed "the days".

The Cars sure put out some totally awesome songs in the 80s and before that as well! :-D This song here takes me back to just jumping in the car with my friends on a summer day with the wind blowing through us and this awesome cassette playing while we drove the countryside! Man alive! Those were the days for sure! Days of youth full of being carefree and feeling so alive! Oh to feel that again with that innocence of youth. God how I miss it all! It just ended way too soon! :-(
juniebird80s I love your comments about this song, this song means a lot to me too. I was a teenager in the sixties & if I were to describe how I felt then, I could use your words because you say it all for me. I guess i'll miss those times forever too. Although we can never go back, listening to the music takes us back for a while, as long as we love the music, we will never grow old
I was 6 when this song came out. For years I had the vaguest memory of riding in the car near the airport with my family and hearing this on the radio. All I remember of the song was the chorus followed by where it changes at 2:29. I never knew the name or artist, just the "what took you so long" bit followed by the change. Every now and then I'd search for the song but didn't have much to go on. Holy shit, after over a quarter of a century I found the song!!!!
This song, this video, was only out done, by a new class. Nirvana. Ric Ocasick led to Kurt Cobain. I'm not sure if that makes sense. But in my head. These were my two favorite "actual" popular bands. Everything I have ever liked is so side edged.
Like a dream...don't wake me from the past...those days of grandeur.
To turn the years back for just one week...then just shoot me when it's done!
hehe...................
kidding of course. Heartbeat City is one of The Cars best...every song has it's place in life and this one reaches heights beyond what we remember of those wonderful 80's! xoxoxoxox♥wavetherock
This is one of those songs that makes you happy and sad all at the same time. The music carries such strong nostalgia -- it takes me back to times when life was so much simpler and more innocent. It's all very bitter-sweet: the memory of better days brings you a warm happiness -- then the knowledge that those days are gone forever brings a deep longing... a longing to fill an emptiness that can never be filled... and with that comes an aching sadness for what we all know we've lost.
@prtzllogic You just expressed the very SAME feelings I do every time I hear this song. Specially for me when back in 2005 I downloaded on cd, and listened to it over and over, I was living in the States very far away from home, family and friends, and this song brought me back to those times you describe, that stays in our minds 4 the rest of our lives, that innocense we experienced growing up in the mid 80ies
@prtzllogic it's strange that until now i never saw anyone put in words what i always felt when i listen to the cars..especially this song. takes me back to my childhood. reminds me of playing golf with my old man on saturdays as a kid...reminds of coming back from sumer holidays in france when i was 12ish. it was one of my dad's favourite albums. maybe i think about it more now coz he died last year. so when i listen to it now,i'm back in the 80's, with him in the car. bitter sweet,longing..yea
@prtzllogic For me it is a feeling of an aching sadness for what all my peers and I were expecting, but that never happened.
Given 20-20 hindsight of middle-age, we now see that what we had wanted at the time could NEVER have happened except for a massive shift in awareness that is only now beginning to creep in.
We were simple & innocent, and we were robbed of what OUGHT to have been.
@prtzllogic OMG finally someone came out & said it SO WELL. Thank GOD for people like you. Gives me just a tiny glimmer of hope. Dare I say...slightly restores my faith in humanity. Good days. If I only knew what was going to happen. The memories & my entire state of mind back then. Younger people: you'll see what I mean later on in life. My advice: "Rejoice in thy youth". How life flies by too damn fast. I would've paused time at around 1984 if possible & slowed it the f**ck down.
Even though I'm a 90s kid, my dad used to have this on cassette playing in the car all the time when he drove around at night. Loved it then and love it now - 80's music has this wonderfully bold feel you just don't have in most music nowadays. Reflects the magic of the decade.
Personally I like John Signa. Signa 6 pack WLS Chicago circa '66. Heh heh sorry just kiddin Doubtlessly th song's true magic. Some find their way, all the rest - - - well Just ref, Google "john signa wls chicago" Should be spelled Cigna. The life & times of Planet Earth eh?
somebody just posted the link to this and so glad they did, had completely forgotten about it and such a good track, remember buying it on 7 inch vinyl back in those primitive times
I have to agree. The CARS made it so much fun. I love those days when go out with my friends listening to this song! IT was purely magic. It's just a "feel good song". The Cars rock!
This group wrote good radio friendly music that was sure to be played in CARS. How genius because now I remember all those wonderful cars I owned and rode in.
This album is one of the #1 80's classics of all times, and this particular track is it's most profound. Cautiously hopeful, upbeat, and dares to be optimistic. This was back in the days before the God damn bankers weren’t done using us.
i heard this song for the first time driving home...it was late at night...it was a warm summer night...stars in the sky with a full moon and the top was down, as always.
i drove and drove...past my my house and back into the warm night. i never wanted to stop; i never wanted the dawn to come. i only wanted the night; the highway and "Heartbeat City" on the radio...
I DISCOVERED THIS SONG TWO WEEKS AGO WHILE MAKING A COMPILATION.
WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG, LIVE VIDEO IS BETTER. I HAD NO IDEA RIC HAD IT IN HIM. IT HAS ACTUALLY BROUGHT TEARS OF SENTIMENT TO MY EYES. HERE IS REAL ROMANCE. TIMELESS. THANKS RIC,
I feel your pain, I too go back to better times with this playing in my ears but it really doesn't have to be all that bad. By that I mean... Don't let life get in the way, sure things have changed, but there are things you too can do to change things back to the better, can't fix it all or take away all the pain, but there is hope. I've had my share of tragedies, Gulf and Iraqi Wars and lost friends, but they wouldn't want me to stop living. Give it a shot, try counseling.
That incredible intro - what a design. So exciting and moving, you just want to get up and dance - how do they do that stuff? How did this not get a number one - huh? Thanks for posting just drives you crazy....
my favorite cars album, and in my top 3 favs in high school.. i said it before, but it's always the unknown songs or the songs that were hardly ever played that i love the most. This one is No Exception. In fact - i think it's one of their best.. I'm Not knocking the late 70's cars stuff - it's all good. loved all the songs though.. Very Underrated album.. lots and lots of memories here!
This is just one of those songs. I loved it back in the 80s and still love it. It has a certain mystique and mood about it. The Cars were a great band, one that is now underappreciated. This song is definately underappreciated...but that just makes it all the more better. I know it, most don't. Suckers on them!!
I will quote a line from my favorite movie "Field of dreams".....Sometimes we dont recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they are happening to us....We always seem too think their will be other days...Then in a flash they are gone"........The eighties were one hell of a time to grow up, Songs like this were maybe underappreciated while they were fresh and new...But boy do they bring me back......
I love, love, love this song...can"t get on my playlist...I got the cassette!! lol! I really gotta upgrade my songs to CD!!!!! grrrrr....!! only one of the best songs from this band!
This song is just so amazing! Always loved this song! Never felt it got all it deserved. It is one excellent song from The Cars. Takes me back to better days. This song takes me back to days of true happiness and innocence. I miss those days. My heart just aches for those days. What a time that was! Never to be forgotten! There was a magic in the air back then that you just cant feel today and that is a real shame. This song is pure magic in itself. Missing those days forever!! ♥♥
@juniebird80s Definately miss those days of innocence, cruising around with the windows down, tunes cranked, great friends just driving or going to find a weekend party!Live was great!
If we expose our youth to this type of music, they will eventually seek it out themselves. My 20 year old son and my friend's 17 year old son and his friends are a great example of this. Please do your part in spreading the good vibes!!
Just a great song from a great album. I remember listening to this song when I was about 13, on my dad's stereo system with some pretty high quality headphones for the time. It was magic.
@pontiacgirl73 If you @pontiacgirl73 on 80th years me it was possible to name that JawaBoy70 :-) There were then in the USSR such Czechoslovak motorcycles JAWA , at present not the fast and reliable .А time it was valid gold thousand nuclear missiles hung over our heads both in the USA and in СССР:-) Us in the USSR then prepared for war for the world, with the whole world :-) But despite it we fell in love and had fun as well as all people in the world, including under this song.
This is the finest track.
