What I was saying was that the American fleet went to Antarctica to train and expected hostile conditions and possibly hostile forces. In other words, they (the Americans) went prepared for anything.
Why? Didn't the Soviets have submarines in those days? 1947? They were a World Power. and no, I am not talking about what attacked the fleet, but only why the US mounted such an operation.

And with Soviet submarines lurking around undersea in those days, anything was possible. Hopefully, if not the governments, then at least the people of the US and Russia are more willing to trust and work together today.
