All I want to say is LOL!!!!! I think it is more likely to win the lottery than being independent from PRC. Remember, you are dealing with the second most powerful country on this planet.
Hong Kong will be wiped to dust in the first day of "Independence".
If China collapse (hopefully), Far east will be very peaceful and truly prosperous. There will be Independent Hong Kong, Manchuria, Inner Mongolia Tibet and East Turkestan. Rest of the mainland may choose a more human oriented regime like Taiwan. Communism will be history. Hong Kongers are brave and smart they should never give up idea of independence without bloodshed. Long live Far East's Democracy Heros.
@DavBlc7 And still have over 1 million Communist party members, largest party according to Guinness Book of World Record in 2010, as well as very good economics measures and good relationship with many countries of the world, no wonder many countries like my countries the UK ignore plead of dissents.
@seal201111 Not possible cos British empire now being replaced by the Commonwealth - Remember UN forbids any re-colonsation of former colonies already independent or return to legalimate mother country.
China have legal rights to take back HK and we British can't do anything legal to take it back. China also forbid any independence for any Chinese terrorities including HK like I told you before.
Here in Britain, it seems we are forgotten about HK and no news about it except protest marches.
@DavBlc7 There is no British empire anymore but the Commonwealth, i doubt china will be communist in 2047, and laws can change. But it's sad that an organization decides whats right and what's not.
@DavBlc7 We may discuss this after independence. India and Singapore are members of the Commonwealth without the Queen being the head of state. Joining the Commonwealth is a respect to the western cultural influence of HK.
@Yoshuayovel Well, you should set up referendum to let HK people decide whether they have their own president or the queen as their Head of State. Your'e right about joining the Commonwealth without the Queen.
However it will be very hard for you to achieve independence cos China will not let HK go as long as the Communists still ruled the nation - the party's top brass are still as hard-line as ever. They said HK is Chinese sovereignty since start of Chinese Empire ages ago.
@seal201111 or better as an independant country with the Queen as head of state cos UK will unable to take back HK under international law and UN Character forbidding re-colonization.
It should be a member of the Commonwealth and HK should take part in Commonwealth games again after long time not take part!
However I don't see China would let Hong Kong go as long as the Communists still in power.
This video is too over exaggerated. Hong Kong should stick to being a SAR, because if not, their ties with China will collapse. A lot of Hong Kong's economy is dependent on China. I believe that Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan should unite. We all should be one family. And hasn't anyone realize that China will become a democracy. It is changing slowly. Stop complaining.
The most important thing is that the Hong Kong people are able to enjoy their freedoms which they are. Hasn't anyone realized that during the British Occupation of Hong Kong, not a single time has Hong Kongers are given the opportunity to vote? Now, during Chinese Occupation, people in Hong Kong are able to vote in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. And taxed collected in Hong Kong is stayed in Hong Kong. So what is there to complain about?
@DavBlc7 The United Kingdom returned Hong Kong to their rightful owners. Britain stole Hong Kong from China in a war that Britain had a huge advantage over. It was unfair. Margret made a good decision. She knew that Hong Kong belonged to China. And what did the UK even did for Hong Kong. Nothing! except rule there. What is important is that Hong Kongers are happy. AND THEY ARE. Who cares if Hong Kong becomes a Commonwealth. Hong Kongers dont care. They just want to be rich and live well.
@BookRocky24 I know that but most Hong Kongers would prefer Taiwan (ROC) to take over HK instead of the PRC cos Taiwan is still legally part of China, hence HK people thought ROC is their rightful owners or wants the British to come back just to keep out the communists, which is very unlikely.
Some would prefer HK to became independent which also very unlikely due to China's stubborn refusal to allow them freedom.
Omg! it brings tears to my eyes and my heart is pounding. It was a scary moment when Aliens from the north is taking over us. I am with you HongKongIndependence!
Dissolution of Britain likely with SNP won Scottish election meaning they have enough votes in Scottish Parliament to create a Yes/No vote for independence within four years. Union flag down and replaced with Scottish flag.
The UK will eventfully be dissolved and replaced with English and Welsh flags. All Ireland reunited.
Hm... This clip said HK loss of demorarcy and loss of culture.. Actually at present both are still protected by basic law and agreements between Britain & China as well as between the US and China. Protests only allowed in HK but in China there is none!
Only very few has been harassed by the Chinese - the PLA is not allowed outside their barracks or HQ to harasses HK people. HK law and order same as British law still in use at present. After 2047 question mark???
@aslissigr or a republic within the Commonwealth but I think Hk people will have their say first. If they want Queen to be their head of state then so be it.
But it will not be a British colony again cos UN Charter doesn't allow that so it will be a Commonwealth realm with a governor general.
However it will be unlikely cos HK were declared Chinese sovereignty and the PLA will kill off any uprising or arrest anyone trying to set up an independent HK despite international outcry.
If u guy hate the communist then that's understandable but denying ur are chinese just sad. If feel sorry for anyone that have ancestor buried in China, have chinese name, chinese culture and speak chinese but deny they are chinese. China have 1.3 billions people we don't need traitors like u guys.
If that's what you think then most Americans should call themselves German because most America are of German ancestry. 'Hong Konger' is an identity shared by people of different ethnic groups so Hong Konger =/= Chinese; it's also an identiy defined by the HK culture which's similar but different from Chinese culture. Hong Kongers're not denying that they're 'Chinese' ('people from China'), because they're never from China. You deny something if it's true and you say it isn't.
p.s. The flag you showed is that of a British overseas territory.Hong Kong does'nt need to be anyone's bitch,or ride shotgun, with your size and wealthyou can sail the seas as a truely sovereign city state! If the Maldives can be independent why not HK?
@JeromeLeong Okay,I meant east turkestan, sorry for the typo,I though normal people would get what I meant! About Singapore, why do you think they have such a disproportionate armed forces? I think it is more than just Malaysia. Are'nt they in a higly strategic position in the malaccas? China has its eyse set on them too.remember HK is in south-east asia that did'nt stop the PRC from usurping it.Thats why Singapore is heavily armed.
HK would get independence only when the mainland gets democracy...or maybe not,who knows? It is not just HK,Macao,Taiwan(the rich cousins) but also Tibet, inner mongolia and Turkmenistan that need independence from PRC/China.
HONG KONG must become an independent country, as a commonwealth realm like canada and australia. 我地一定要趕走中共....中國人請滾回中國, 香港係屬於各個民族既香港人!! 支持香港獨立, 重返英聯邦!!!
@lungkk I don't think China will give up HK so easily, China have plan so I thought, in case HK want to be independant which China forbids in 1984 treaty.
China had declared HK Chinese sovereignty terrority which means the PLA would have to be called up to defend it. The plan would have called for declaring of martial law, suspending basic law and more PLA pouring into HK despite international outcry, just like they did to Tibet ands Xinjang - HK people don't want that.
@lungkk HK TV showed Chinese police and PLA put down uprisings in Tibet and Xinjang. It seemed to put HK people off uprising cos they want peace so though they want freedom for HK, they seems to have gave up plan for independence.
The PLA will stay strong for many years due to more money pouring into government fund that helps the PLA so the USA claims. British want trades with China so not likely to help HK people.
Independence seems a long way away withe the PLA in control.
@lungkk Well, China had a plan how to put down uprising or rebels who want HK as independent nation as seeing it is illegal under Chinese law even if it is peaceful.
@lungkk Well, China had a plan how to put down uprising or arrests rebels who want HK as independent nation as seeing it is illegal under Chinese law even if it is peaceful.
@lungkk Well, China had a plan how to put down uprising or arrests rebels who want HK as independent nation as seeing it is illegal under Chinese law even if it is peaceful.
Arrested rebels would be taken to Chinese prisons where they would be sentenced to a long term under Chinese supervision.
@lungkk Well, China had a plan how to put down uprising or arrests rebels who want HK as independent nation as seeing it is illegal under Chinese law even if it is peaceful.
Arrested rebels would be taken to Chinese prisons where they would be sentenced to long terms under Chinese supervision just like in Tibet and Xinjiang.
I'm a Hongkonger and I always admire the Rhodesians who had the courage to decalre an unilateral independence from Britain despite international objections. If only we had the same courage, we could have defied the Chinese long long ago and would have been free from Chinese oppression. Long live independent Hong Kong! God save the Queen!
@douglastytam Well, the Chinese have a law passed some years ago when Taiwan threatened break away from China. it forbids any independences on any Chinese Sovereignty terrorities. The PLA and HK police have orders to put down any uprising should it occur. The law also allows suspensions of basic law and put up martial law until uprising is put down.
HK people don't want that so have no choice but to live peacefully under Chinese rule.
Hong Kongers don't have choice but to live peacefully under Chinese rule? So you're suggesting that Hong Kongers'd rather have an unstable society full of violence? Please don't put words into Hong Kongers' mouths. I don't whether you're a Chinese or a pro-Chinese Hong Konger, but I've noticed that you've followed me all the way from another video to here and start arguments with me; whether you like it or not - Hong Kongers generally dislike China and the Chinese.
@douglastytam I am not a Chinese nor a pro-Chinese Hong Konger but I am a Brit living in UK but I was only following facts from inside the UK, HK and China. I know HKers don't like China but surely they're Chinese by hearts.
I also looked at history and for most of it before we took it over, it belonged to the Chinese and Mongol Empires and most HK settled in from China.
I would like HK to go back to Britain or gain independence but the problem is that the Chinese government won't let HK go.
Hong Kong culture and Chinese culture are similar but different; that makes Hong Kongers distinct people from those in China; also, Hong Kong's a multiracial territory with ethnic Chinese being the majority ethnic group and there're definitely other ethnic groups present. 'Hong Konger' is an identity for different races, and certainly =/= Chinese.
Hong Kong was a British colony and was on the UN's list of non-self-governing territrories; it was the Chinese who asked for the deletion of HK from that list. The Chinese deprived Hong Kongers the right of self-determination which the latter. I respect Hong Kongers' choice - whether they're in favour of or against independence; but HKers should be allowed to have a referendum on this issue.
@douglastytam It was at first a British Crown colony then changed to depended terrority after UN passed a anti-colonies charter in the early 80's I should think so. When Deng met Mrs Thatcher in Beijing in 1982, she asked if Hk people could get a referendum but Deng said No!
As far as I know most of the Communist Party leadership are hardlines even President Hu too but Hu will leave post next year but maybe another hardline president as always voted by many hardline communist party leadership.
Most Hkers're migrants from China? Yes, you're right. They've been living in HK for decades and have already become culturally different from the people of China. These people have been away from China, have lived in a place where eastern and western cultures mix, and developed a new fusion culture which's the HK culture. I'm not trying to deny that they're ETHNIC Chinese, but they're certainly not Chinese in the sense that they're 'from China'.
I'm not against both ideas of HK becoming a British overseas territory again or becoming independent. I, same as others who support HK independence, am aware that Chinese hindrance is the greatest obstacle. But situation changes and probably someday there'll be an open-minded Chinese leadership which'll look at the issue differently.
@douglastytam That's right and it is likely if HK became independant, it will became a member of the Commonwealth but republic or monarchy under the Queen - let HK people decided - it is their choice.
I don't think at present there would be open minded Chinese leadership as there are many hardline members of the old guard - they are ones who pick president - Hu will leave post next year but likely to get a hardline president too.

The Chinese stationed troops in HK because they're worried that HK'd become a base for overthrowing their régime. The Chinese wants stability and their interest protected; I believe that as long as the independent HK can maintain amity with the Chinese and their interest's not seriously damaged, than it shouldn't be hard for the Chinese to let Hong Kongers go.I do appreciate this frank exchange of views between me and you. This's thought-provoking and I'd like to thank you for that.
@douglastytam that's right they stationed troops in HK but they are not allowed to go outside their barracks or base unless moving to another barracks or base, even on leaves.
Whether Hong Kong's to become an independent or not should be a matter for referendum in Hong Kong, but not decided by you. Btw, if Hong Kongers're really 'happy to have the territory remain Chinese', you shouldn't worry about any Hong Kong independence movement at all; hang on, didn't someone show insecurity?
and one more thing, those that fled hong kong because they fear the communist would damage their wealth, they never deny they are chinese, unlike you u fucking traitor. I have relative and friend that come from hong kong, they never for a single moment forget who they are, so please don't represent the entire population of hong kong just because of how you feel.
There're Hong Kongers of different ethnic backgrounds, such as Chinese Hong Kongers, Indian Hong Kongers and Pakistani Hong Kongers; that's similar to Chinese Britons, Indian Britons and Pakistani Britons. I suppose your relatives and friends from Hong Kong are Chinese Hong Kongers; these people say they're Chinese because they're ETHNICALLY Chinese; they don't mean that they're from China and associated to it. I can guarantee you tht most Hong Kongers identify themselves as HKers
Not only Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan should be independent, but also Shanghai, because half of the Shanghai's tax is being collected to the central government, what's the fuck
@jerryxiachina We cannot demand so much immediately. Things need to worked out slowly. Hong Kong first, the international financial hub. Then the Nationalistic-Republican Taiwan, the great views and beautiful sightings of Macau, and lastly the great skyscrapers of Shanghai.
@HongKongIndependence if you hate communist then that's understandable. But when you said you not chinese which this video pretty sure all, you are a fucking traitor. When you said hong kong people are not han chinese you are peeing on the grave of all the chinese including your ancestor that fought and die against the british empire just for the sake of not splitting china apart. Traitor. Maybe british wealth make you forget who your ancestor are uhh? btw hong kong people are Han-chinese too.
Race is nothing more than fascist propaganda to enslave dumbasses such as yourself, even koreans and vietnamese don't consider themselves chinese despite the long history.Sure pick out 1 or 2 acestor who fits with your ideas but what about the ones that were cavemen or slaves?
Been watching too much CCTV on cable telling you that the CCP are leading the chinese master race into the new era?
@BAIYUE1 what you mean chinese don't speak cantonese. Do u even know the Hong Kong use to be part of GUangdong before the split? People in guangdong do speak cantonese. and if u ask most oversea chinese that speak cantonese most if not all will tell u that they are chinese. China have many dialects, u do know that right? I dont know why i even reply ur question b/c its so stupid but i guess i don't want u to make urself look like an fool so i must tell u all these.
@BAIYUE1 Lol, yeah cantonese is a dialect and at the same time it is recognise as a language in HONG KONG . what is your problem lol? u are so funny. doing research of all the dialects and stuff =.=' , MAN! i mean come on. What language are you speaking? Vietnamese?
One language as Cantonese was spoken in Guang Dong,Hongkong,Malay,Singapore,US,UK,....over the world. So funny to say Cantonese is dialect. It has enough factor to become language.
@BAIYUE1 HAN CHINESE LANGUAGES HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS BECAUSE EVER SINCE 4000 BC CHINESE HAS THEIR OWN CIVILIZATION ALREADY. OUR LANGUAGE IS SIMILAR. THE TONE and STUFF.
@BAIYUE1 OMG u are very stubborn. HAN LANGUAGES IS CONSIST OF ALL THOSE HAN LANGUAGES INCLUDING CANTO, FUJIANESE, SHANGHAINESE, MANDARIN AND SO ON. WTH MAN, CANT" THIS ANSWER SATISFY UR DUMB QUESTION?
With your theory, I can put Zhuangzu,Mongolia, manchu,Hui,. to Han chinese. So funny! One day Chinese can put Japanese,Korean or even USA to HAn chinese.(CHinese dream)
But actually,Every one know simply Han chinese is Mandarin or even chinese is Mandarin.cheer!
@BAIYUE1 What the heck, ZHUANGZU, MONGOL , MANCHU , HUI IS NOT HAN CHINESE. man how can i tell u that, u are have a hard head. =.=" try google han-Chinese or on Wikipedia . ur lack of knowledge man!HAN CHINESE IS A RACE, understand? HAN CHINESE IS THE LARGEST RACE IN ENTIRE EARTH AND IT DOES NOT INCLUDE MANCHU , MONGOL, OR WHAT EVER. GOOGLE HAN-CHINESE and ull understand what imm talkinga bout
@BAIYUE1 cause Chinese race expand, just like the hindi people.where u can get urdu, punjabi, hindi, but they speak similar languages, certain word and pronounciation is different, but same writing system. Han chinese use the same writing system ever since 4 thousand years ago. now look, Chinese kingdom expand because of conquer , and emperor's messenger constantly update them using the letter and stuff, because they are far away. and this is why their language evolve from old chinese language
We also use chinese writing in past, but we are still Yue people.Problem is Chinese can conquer Baiyue but Yue blood still more than chinese blood,Baiyue culture still has impact to chinese culture.
Many chinese language now has origin from Baiyue people.
@BAIYUE1 ZHAUNG , HMONG, YI , YAO AND HUI IS NOT HAN CHINESE, SHANGHAINESE, FUZHOUNESE , FUJIANESE , CANTONESE IS HAN CHINESE, KNOW? CHINESE LANGAUGE HAS EXPAND OVER MAY MANY YEARS FOR EXAMPLE , FUZHOU LANGUAGE IS MIN- DONG , FUJIANESE IS MIN-NAN HAINESE IS ALSO UNDER MIN-NAN , BOTH COME FROM MIN LAANGUAGE FAMILY IT SHOWS THAT MIN-NAN LANGUAGE HAS SEPERATED IN TO MANY TYPES OF HOKKIEN, AMOY HOKKIEN,QUAN ZHOU HOKKIEN, XIAMEN (PUTIAN) HOKKIEN. UNDERSTAND?!?!
@BAIYUE1 The Chinese language differe from region to region but whatever chinese speak as their regional dialect is still Chinese. You people argue that Hong Konger are not chinese, let me ask whoever think this is correct this. If you smart enough then you should know that Hong Kong use to be part of Guangdong. Guangdong is where the cantonese dialect came from and the people of Guangdong never deny that they are Chinese.
@BAIYUE1 Think about this. IF Hong Kong is not part of China then why does the British give back the Island to China, just use your fuc king brain and think for an moment. People Hong Kong fought and resist the British rule over the island after China loses the Opium War and was force to give up the island, but now you guy deny you are Chinese lol. I hope your ancestor grave doesnt flip upside down.
Hong Kong was built by the Hong Kong people and the British, not by Beijing...
Hk's only problem is that unfortunately it is too small to rely on its own, with china next door... wish Hong Kong will never lose its special characteristics, which make it a place utterly different from China... long live Hong Kong!
@ngai1842 We won't know that it is impossible, unless we try it. Unite under one, and march forth to salvation, freedom, and democracy of the new Hong Kong Republic.
True. If only Hong Kongers had the courage the Rhodesians had, we'd have long been independent and have proudly proclaimed to the rest of the world that we're Hong Kongers, NOT Chinese! The achievement of Hong Kong's due to the effort of those people in the 60s and 70s; now we've become richer, but we've lost the optimism and endeavour...
@HongKongIndependence Republic? According to comments in some You tube clips about British Hong Kong or HK independence - some want the Queen as head of state, some want the British back which may be unlikely, some want a republic, some want HK to go to ROC, not PROC and some want to stay with China.
I think we'll best leave to people of Hong Kong to make their choice. However it will be unlikely considering China's stubborn refusal to allow HK people to make their choice.
I am British lived in hong kong from the age of 6 to 20 left in 2006, I am amazed at how hong kong has grown I would hate to see this amazing city absorbed into Chinese dictatorship, hong kong should be totally independent, it's a shame Britain had to leave!!!
@gazCROSSHAIR00 Wrong, New Territories was leased to Britain for 99 years. Hong Kong, and Kowloon, was suppose to be permanently ceded to Britain under the Unequal Treaties, which the Communist Government did not recognize later on. The only reason they returned HK as a WHOLE was because of the lease. 99 years was up, and giving 1/4 of HK was not worth keeping it as a whole, because Britain was incapable of defending HK any longer, and supplying them with what they need.
Better you get under british rule, that's what most want, like in Macau they want to be portuguese again, most people in both places have both portuguese and british nationality, but first, Hong Kong and Macau must be liberated of China, and then, let Hongkongersdecide
want the british.Hong kong just want independece, however one must not forget that that we are also cantonese chinese. We will support china but we want democracy.Macau don't want the portugese either.
"Chinese" occupation or British occupation? Hong Kong was China until the British invaded. You folks lost your identity when Britain took over. The British weren't your forefathers just as they aren't the forefathers of the Native Americans. Is that the flag you want, with a British emblem on it? Seriously? At the very least try and become truly independent; what's this obsession with the British? Have more pride in your race. Gosh.
@PriestessLeah That is not the proposed Independent HK Flag. That is the flag of this movement. Red represents our culture of Canton, the Dragon represents Hong Kong's rise. British Flag represents Democracy that the British have seeded within all Hong Kongers that grew into what the flag represents. Hong Kong Independence.
@PriestessLeah I also did not seeing the british flag on this video. It caused too much fucking misunderstanding for hong kong people. We do not want the fucking british people.Seriously,I get what you're saying but please understand that all hong kong wants is independence.Hong kong people are cantonese.
@owardis397 During demonstrations in HK, people wave British HK flag, the most recent 1st July marches, a lot of people were waving British HK flag and ROC flag. The British Union Jack on the flag you see at the end of the video is a flag designed to represent this MOVEMENT, not the Independent HK. The Independent HK, will have a different flag. The representation is that the Union Jack reprepsents Democracy, red background for Chinese tradition of luck and Dragon for HK's rise into independence
@WatchingEngland We are proud that Hong Kong was able to make it onto the maps. If it were not liberated in 1842, who knows what Hong Kong would have been known as? Probably just another island that is under the name 'Shenzhen'. What shame would that bring us all...
That flag design is stupid o_o no really it's awful. Also, you don't need the union jack in the flag to be part of the commonwealth. Hong Kong should, for the moment being, just try to isolate itself from PRC, and try their best to avoid any PRC-appointed legislation from coming in.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN OF HONG KONG! A NEW COMMONWEALTH REALM IN THE FUTURE!
(Shame China would not allow that to happen!)
DavBlc7 8 months ago
@DavBlc7 The United Kingdom returned Hong Kong to their rightful owners. Britain stole Hong Kong from China in a war that Britain had a huge advantage over. It was unfair. Margret made a good decision. She knew that Hong Kong belonged to China. And what did the UK even did for Hong Kong. Nothing! except rule there. What is important is that Hong Kongers are happy. AND THEY ARE. Who cares if Hong Kong becomes a Commonwealth. Hong Kongers dont care. They just want to be rich and live well.
BookRocky24 8 months ago
@BookRocky24 I know that but most Hong Kongers would prefer Taiwan (ROC) to take over HK instead of the PRC cos Taiwan is still legally part of China, hence HK people thought ROC is their rightful owners or wants the British to come back just to keep out the communists, which is very unlikely.
Some would prefer HK to became independent which also very unlikely due to China's stubborn refusal to allow them freedom.

DavBlc7 11 months ago
@lungkk HK TV showed Chinese police and PLA put down uprisings in Tibet and Xinjang. It seemed to put HK people off uprising cos they want peace so though they want freedom for HK, they seems to have gave up plan for independence.
The PLA will stay strong for many years due to more money pouring into government fund that helps the PLA so the USA claims. British want trades with China so not likely to help HK people.
Independence seems a long way away withe the PLA in control.

If only we had the same courage, we could have defied the Chinese long long ago and would have been free from Chinese oppression. Long live independent Hong Kong! God save the Queen!
douglastytam 1 year ago
@douglastytam Well, the Chinese have a law passed some years ago when Taiwan threatened break away from China. it forbids any independences on any Chinese Sovereignty terrorities. The PLA and HK police have orders to put down any uprising should it occur. The law also allows suspensions of basic law and put up martial law until uprising is put down.
HK people don't want that so have no choice but to live peacefully under Chinese rule.
DavBlc7 10 months ago
@DavBlc7
Hong Kongers don't have choice but to live peacefully under Chinese rule? So you're suggesting that Hong Kongers'd rather have an unstable society full of violence? Please don't put words into Hong Kongers' mouths. I don't whether you're a Chinese or a pro-Chinese Hong Konger, but I've noticed that you've followed me all the way from another video to here and start arguments with me; whether you like it or not - Hong Kongers generally dislike China and the Chinese.
douglastytam 10 months ago
@douglastytam I am not a Chinese nor a pro-Chinese Hong Konger but I am a Brit living in UK but I was only following facts from inside the UK, HK and China. I know HKers don't like China but surely they're Chinese by hearts.
I also looked at history and for most of it before we took it over, it belonged to the Chinese and Mongol Empires and most HK settled in from China.
I would like HK to go back to Britain or gain independence but the problem is that the Chinese government won't let HK go.
DavBlc7 10 months ago
@DavBlc7
Hong Kong culture and Chinese culture are similar but different; that makes Hong Kongers distinct people from those in China; also, Hong Kong's a multiracial territory with ethnic Chinese being the majority ethnic group and there're definitely other ethnic groups present. 'Hong Konger' is an identity for different races, and certainly =/= Chinese.
douglastytam 9 months ago
@DavBlc7
Hong Kong was a British colony and was on the UN's list of non-self-governing territrories; it was the Chinese who asked for the deletion of HK from that list. The Chinese deprived Hong Kongers the right of self-determination which the latter. I respect Hong Kongers' choice - whether they're in favour of or against independence; but HKers should be allowed to have a referendum on this issue.
douglastytam 9 months ago
@douglastytam It was at first a British Crown colony then changed to depended terrority after UN passed a anti-colonies charter in the early 80's I should think so. When Deng met Mrs Thatcher in Beijing in 1982, she asked if Hk people could get a referendum but Deng said No!
As far as I know most of the Communist Party leadership are hardlines even President Hu too but Hu will leave post next year but maybe another hardline president as always voted by many hardline communist party leadership.
DavBlc7 9 months ago
@DavBlc7
Most Hkers're migrants from China? Yes, you're right. They've been living in HK for decades and have already become culturally different from the people of China. These people have been away from China, have lived in a place where eastern and western cultures mix, and developed a new fusion culture which's the HK culture. I'm not trying to deny that they're ETHNIC Chinese, but they're certainly not Chinese in the sense that they're 'from China'.
douglastytam 9 months ago
@DavBlc7
I'm not against both ideas of HK becoming a British overseas territory again or becoming independent. I, same as others who support HK independence, am aware that Chinese hindrance is the greatest obstacle. But situation changes and probably someday there'll be an open-minded Chinese leadership which'll look at the issue differently.
douglastytam 9 months ago
@douglastytam That's right and it is likely if HK became independant, it will became a member of the Commonwealth but republic or monarchy under the Queen - let HK people decided - it is their choice.
I don't think at present there would be open minded Chinese leadership as there are many hardline members of the old guard - they are ones who pick president - Hu will leave post next year but likely to get a hardline president too.
DavBlc7 9 months ago

The Chinese stationed troops in HK because they're worried that HK'd become a base for overthrowing their régime. The Chinese wants stability and their interest protected; I believe that as long as the independent HK can maintain amity with the Chinese and their interest's not seriously damaged, than it shouldn't be hard for the Chinese to let Hong Kongers go.I do appreciate this frank exchange of views between me and you. This's thought-provoking and I'd like to thank you for that.

Whether Hong Kong's to become an independent or not should be a matter for referendum in Hong Kong, but not decided by you. Btw, if Hong Kongers're really 'happy to have the territory remain Chinese', you shouldn't worry about any Hong Kong independence movement at all; hang on, didn't someone show insecurity?
douglastytam 10 months ago

I can guarantee you tht most Hong Kongers identify themselves as HKers

@gazCROSSHAIR00 Wrong, New Territories was leased to Britain for 99 years. Hong Kong, and Kowloon, was suppose to be permanently ceded to Britain under the Unequal Treaties, which the Communist Government did not recognize later on. The only reason they returned HK as a WHOLE was because of the lease. 99 years was up, and giving 1/4 of HK was not worth keeping it as a whole, because Britain was incapable of defending HK any longer, and supplying them with what they need.
