Best team of modern times was the Aussie one from the previous Ashes series, the current Indian one would get pasted by it there's no parallel between how good they actually were and todays teams India lacks enough quality pacemen if you combined England and India we'd be in with a shout but alone I wouldn't have though so.
@MrTom07 I think the best australian side i've seen is the 2001 ashes team with Steve Waugh captain they were awesome. Think about the bowling Mcgrath and Gillespie opening then Warne and Lee to come scary. As for the batting Gilchrist at 7 absolutley incredible. I think India are a very good side and on their own patch they are extremely hard to beat. That Australian side as an alround team is better than the current Indian team but like i say India in their own conditions are so hard to beat

As much as i support England, they will be going into the ashes 2nd favourites and in a complete and utter mess.
Australia seem to be doing well right now, the way they are playing against South Africa seems fantastic, especially with such an inexperiencced squad!
On the other hand, England can't even bowl out a team such as the West Indies, nor can they win (no disrespect to WI's fans).

When Aussie sides (in any sport) are cornered, they are like dangerous dogs and bite back. For example, they have just levelled the ODIs against NZ. Yeah, tight games that Aus of old would have put away, but they won. England have no coach right now, not the best Ashes preparation.

While Haydos holds 380* in test cricket, it was against Zimbabwe which had just been decimated by political problems. He achieved it during the Rugby World Cup 2003. Stephen Jones wrote a good book about the WRC2003, and how he met the Zimbabwe captain after Haydos had posted the score. It might as well have been a village cricket team playing Aus. Still, I guess you can only play what is in front of you.
However, the 181 in ODI and 50+ average speaks volumes in all fairness. Class.

I think Ponting has just snatched 3rd in ODIs following the 3rd ODI against the Kiwis. Still, both records are Aussies. I rate Ponting over Haydos any day.

That's OK. I didn't say Eng weren't great in 2005, just it was a false dawn. Eng were actually a great side in 2005, they had to be to beat Aus. They had been playing well for 2-3 years and had reached 2 in the world. Had they beaten Aus 5-0 they would have been top test dogs. However, 2005 was their pinnacle. English cricket has some great talent, but the structure and organisation is wrong. The game is run by old men who have their own interests, selecting their own county players.

close but yet so far. he was a substitute fielder, and he pulled off a magnificent catch,leaping backwards one-handed. he was about 1 foot off the ground as he did this. Commentators replayed it about 6 times that day as the best catch they had ever seen...and i agree...one of the best. I'm not a HAYDOS fan but i remember it.
But he failed again this last test match.he poked around for 39 runs, hit a few boundaries by finding the edge of his bat.laughable.Many people want him to retire.

I just saw the video where Sachin and Brett Lee had a similar incident but both handled it in an extremely courteous and gentlemanly fashion. Lee Possibly going for a low full toss loses control of the ball and it hits sachin near the shoulder...but the immediate apology and sachin's awesome grace just made the incident something of an oxymoron to watch as it was nasty and yet brought out a good side in two people....This however reflects on how Hayden really is...He's a mean spirited guy..
