Many (almost half) of the families sent "back" to Mexico during the repatriation of the 1930's were actually Americans descended from families who originally lived out West before it ever was a part of the U.S. However, because they had brown skin and Spanish surnames, they were clumped together with newly arrived Mexicans who had entered the U.S. in search of work.
