  • first time seeing this .. made me cry... the irony of nazi's watching a nude feminine man dance when they killed off all the so called homosexuals.. whether you were or not.. this is how i see it. very movig indeed.

  • terrific ballet dancer.

  • @LastTree faggot

  • @lonepantherkmt Why do you attack me? I'm a thirteen year old, I'm not a homo fag :(

  • @lonepantherkmt This is one of the most disgustings things I've ever read! Being homosexual is not wrong at all and it has nothing to do with the awful nazis!

  • OH YEAH ~ This had them running to the exits ..... fascinating we have garbage like "Schinder's List" - the movie - the real man was a littel el differente, HOWEVER - then this - FAR MORE "on the money" ..... but aren't we all just a little too queasy my little puppies???'

  • This is Godly.

  • Magic!

  • One of the most powerful scene I have ever seen !

  • @kolkron As usual you are always well informed! Is there not, in all of us, a measure of self-hatred?

  • @kolkron A self confessed genius is an oxymoron!

  • @kolkron Could you kindly expand upon that remark please - it is an over simplification in my opinion. Curiously enough in the original script there was a great deal of politics but Bogarde has the politics cut in order to concentrate upon the theme of love. Did that say more about Sir Dirk or the script? I am not sure that it is an easy question to answer!

  • @kolkron You are funny particularly that last remark - could an "unvoluptous conformist robot" actually jerk off? - sorry just my pedantic mind at work!

  • @kolkron That is an interesting and significant remark. The juxtaposing of two opposite themes and their contrast and how it can affect us. But I agree with you as to the effect - I am sure that Liliana Calvani, the director, would be delighted that you reacted in the way that you did!.

  • This has to be the best movie ever.

  • @Entsetzen1984 Tell me why you think that - I do agree that it is an interesting film and has stayed with me for a very long time. What makes it such a great movie for you - I look forward to your thoughts?

  • @Saffron1947 hmmm well perhaps I may come off as a sicko, but a really like the whole theme of dominace and power. I'm also a huge WWII history enthusiast and I'm especially interested in the Third Reich. Also, there is something about the colors of this film that I really like. Like some saturated blue tint, it feels cold. Lastly, I really like this scene in particular because it just feels so surreal and unusual.

  • @Entsetzen1984 I agree with your thoughts on the colour grading in the Night Porter - it is, in many ways, a very stylised film but what you would expect from Liliana Calvani. A dreamlike element. There is a strange thread running through the film despite or perhaps because of the dark nature of the subject. Your fascination with the Third Reich I am curious about . It is of course a very bibilcal theme and in some ways this film throws light upon the nature of evil.

  • @Entsetzen1984 The cinema is a very powerful medium and even Lenin, after watching reportage at the beginning of the last century, saw its potential in allowing his propoganda to spread through uneducated peasants if that is not an oxymoron. There is much food for thought there in my view. After all remember no century before had such potential power. Reportage was largely written and only still shots! The moving image had a power unknown until the beginning of the 20th century!

  • @Entsetzen1984 In some respects films should never be real only dreamlike, surreal and entirely impressionistic.. That is why so many hard hitting documentaries don't work in my opinion and reality television is nonsense and a contradiction in terms.. Actors aren't being real but good ones have the ability to make you believe it is real by displays at times of extraordinary technique. Think of a painting - it isn't real but the artist's technique draws you in to another kind of reality.

  • @Saffron1947 Wow. Thank you for such a nice and informative reply. My fascination with the Third Reich has to do with my frustration with modern politics and modern life in general. I think that's very true what you said about films needing to be impressionistic because some messages would just be to hard to convey efficiently in a realistic fashion. Haha and no I don't think uneducated peasants is and oxymoron considering how the average prole acts. Film is the best medium for propaganda.

  • @Entsetzen1984 There is much to say about the effects of the media - with all the information available how much more do we know in reality. I am very skeptical regarding media coverage - after the Weapons of Mass Destruction proved to be totally without foundation but as we know neither the British Govermment nor the United states were truthful about this. They used the media to manipulate people - well some people! I share much of your frustration with modern so-called democracy!!

  • @Saffron1947 Of course they lied, there is so much profit invading countries with oil. The problem I see with democracy is that it's promise of freedom is just an illusion, the media and our politicians herd us in whatever direction is more convenient for the system. I believe democracy is built on this greed, sex and consumerism in genral, all distractions to keep us occupied and away from thinking.

  • @Entsetzen1984 You articulate the problem very well and I share your thoughts entirely - but how to make a difference my friend? Democracy is now unworkable for the reasons that you state! We need an alternative perspective - but does, I repeat, a totalitarian society produce fruit?

  • @Saffron1947 Yes it does produce fruit and it grows it fast. We just do not need to made the genocidal and war-mongering mistakes of fascist predecessors.

  • @Entsetzen1984 But how do we avoid the pitfalls of war mongers? History is littered with them. Is the search for power at the root of all social democrats? You mention the mistakes of fascit predecessors - but the Third Reich was built upon such ideas!

  • @Saffron1947 Not only those ideas, it was also built on honor, family and an overall unity as a single hard working force that brought their nation out of the ruin of WWI and Versailles. In the U.S. we are also in ruin, but people were just hoping that Obama could fix everything like he was the second coming of Christ. So my fellow Americans continue to loaf in their recliners, watch TV, abuse the legal system and buy on credit while hoping that because they placed a vote debt will all go away.

  • @Entsetzen1984 The administration of the USA is very much mistrusted here in Europe and elsewhere and too much is expected of Obama - no one could deliver what most people want - they are unrealistic

  • @Saffron1947 As for the pitfalls of war mongers, we know what they look like by now and how they act. We can be smart enough not to let those types in power.

  • @Entsetzen1984 Let me pose the question - are we smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of war mongers - history seems to dictate that we aren't! Are they as recognisable as you seem to suggest - after all when Hitler became chancellor - Germany moved into what they believed to be a new world. What happened to him once he finally got Germany back on its feet?

  • @Entsetzen1984 I stopped voting some years ago for a variety of reasons. Do politicians ever tell us the truth or are they, as I strongly suspect, constantly pulling the wool over our eyes. Consider the Fools in Shakespeare's plays often they are the only ones to tell the truth like modern satarists. You are right to be disillusioned by modern life - are we so enlightened as they often tell us?

  • @Saffron1947 No, of course I'm sure many politicians enter office with good intentions but all I see are clowns in suits putting on a play or show. Lies, propaganda and media clouding are vision. It is the worst in the U.S. I don't think truth is good for a democratic government.

  • @Entsetzen1984 Tell me where historically has a totalitarian regime worked? I agree with you regarding politicians and US are the prime culprits. Truth and politicians - there is a true oxymoron. Very few politicians remain idealistic!

  • @Saffron1947 Oops sorry, I forgot to say that right now I live in the CZ but that will change soon, it's only a very temporary location. As for where have these regimes worked? Nowhere! But I believe we are more knowledgeable now to modify these ways of totalitarian government to be functional and great.

I suppose things change when you are actually in office, with all the influence from outside forces it would be hard to remain idealistic.

  • @Entsetzen1984 At least clowns can be funny - politicians rarely are

  • @Saffron1947 Haha. Clowns seem to be terrifying to most people I know so they do have that in common with politicians. :)

  • @Entsetzen1984 Very interesting your thoughts on Clowns and for many people clowns are frightening because they are subversive and often they touch the root of a social problem - think of black comedy comedians. Again, I repeat, look at the clowns in Shakespeare - they often sit at the feet of Kings

  • @Saffron1947 Well those were royal fools and court jesters they're are a bit different in appearance to they type of Bozo like clowns that make people turn pale.

  • @Entsetzen1984 You seem to be impyling that society is too soft or lenient in present day crime or at least that is the impression you give me. Do you believe that the Third Reich was constructed for power only or to create a kind of synthetic society - I am interested again in your perception of the Thrid Reich?

  • @Saffron1947 Yes that is exactly what I believe, you got it absolutely right. I believe in order, zeal and discipline.

  • @Entsetzen1984 To me the concept of a Third Reich is based upon and has a flavour of fundamentalist political thought. That recipe leads, in my opinion, to a totalitarian society. Would you advocate that point of view?

  • @Saffron1947 Yes I would advocate that point of view and I would advocate a totalitarian society. :)

  • @Saffron1947 Yes I would advocate that point of view and I would advocate a totalitarian society. I see the world today as being identicle to Huxley's "Brave New World" and I can see a superiority to that in Orwell's "1984" and totalitarianism as a concept in general. :)

  • @Entsetzen1984 We are at a dangerous turning point in this century but consider the outcome of previous and existing totalitarian societies - have they worked anywhere and if so at what price? - also where in Central europe do you live - I am interested very much?

  • @Saffron1947 Yes previous totalitarian societies have ended in disaster and horror but initially improvements to the country they were under were rapid and great. I believe the key is not to become so arrogant as a country like Mussolini's Italy and Adolf's Germany to cloud judgement, scape goat false enemies and to engage in unnecessary wars. Taking heed to the words of Sun Tzu would make a totalitarian society work.

  • @Entsetzen1984 You make an important point my friend - but what happens when the fruit of a totalitarian society goes bad as it always does. The initial movement works in some cases but then it goes wrong - dictators are often good in the beginning but even those leaders seek power and oppress and repress others - how to avoid this?

  • @Entsetzen1984 I am curious - what part of the world do you live - if I may ask?

  • @Saffron1947 Haha, right now I'm lost in central Europe but before I was in the U.S. as well as Italy.

  • filth !

  • @sprucepantherpdx Now has this short conclusion of yours been arrived at quickly - or simply a reactionary response. Of course the subject matter is dark - the Nazis were of course and extreme set of elitist goons of that there is no doubt. But what do you mean by filth? The film in many ways has surrealist and impressionistic images. Of course such images spring from the imagination. I can think of many films shown in cinemas today that will be forgotten very quickly forgotten!

  • @sprucepantherpdx While many current films will have a very short life - I doubt that the "Night Porter" will be forgotten in the same manner. I believe that by saying "filth" you have missed the stylistic nature of the film! I wonder if the principal elements in this film are what drew Sir Dirk Bogarde into this project?

  • Thanks Pediatrapaola for sharing this video. Je trouve que c'est relativement dommage que Amadio ait quitté l'opéra à l'âge de 22 ans. Mais une très belle carrière de chorégraphe et danseur était devant lui. Excellent !!!

  • he was really a very strong dancer often partner of carla fracci

  • @pediatrapaola Thank you very much for sharing. This is really very impressive!!!

  • Mais uma obra-prima de LIliana Cavani. MARAVILHOSO !!!! HEIL HITLER FROM BRASIL !!!

  • Love the film.

Does any one know the name of the hotel in Vienna? Please help.

  • Who is the composer of music that sounds after music by Gluck ? What do you call this a piece of music, please?

  • The name of this dance is "I LOST MY TIE-CLIP"

  • @goback3spaces How illuminating you are - no doubt many will want to share their graititude with you!!!!

  • @Saffron1947 I'm available to receive it. Wonder if he ever found that bloody clip.

  • Wondeful movie ! Dirk Bogarde is mesmerizing. Love and hate are intimately mingled in this film.

    R.I.P. Dirk Bogarde

    Regards from France

  • is this wayne sleep?

  • @fabios66 no is AMEDEO AMODIO from italy la scala rome opera great carachter dancer.now teacher and director

  • An excellent movie!!

  • lol! so right kolkron!

  • kolkron is a genius.

  • @lonepantherAK Beware using that word "genius"as it has lost most of its currency nowadays - I am sure that you mean he simply said something that you can totally identify with!

  • Kolkron you obviosly have learning disabilties and a self esteem problem and before you start insulting people just be aware, that it's better to keep your mouth shut and be thought of as a fool then open your mouth and be proved one !

  • @psychodamned What a keen observer you are of people here on You Tube - but always keep in mind that being here means rubbing shoulders with people you would rather avoid in normal life. Their are more fools here than Shakespeare every wrote about and most of his fools had the best lines!

  • In a very abusive captor sort of way. His motivation is power, he ain't Casanova he's a Nazi !

He hates to see her with a new husband and want's control again. His control is all she knows, and fears, and thats why she leaves her husband. She's sado-masochistic,

That's why the film is controversial on many levels !

  • @psychodamned I suppose that the Nazis were, in reality, fundamentalist national socialists! Curious the effect that evil regimes have and their longevity! Will they ever be forgotten historically or otherwise?

  • 1:39 is one of my favorite shots in all of cinema.

  • Yes, but it's Hollywood that's hard to resist. Those uniforms were fucking beautiful.

  • The film was about sado amsochistic relationships and how the abused will always return to their abuser, because of fear of disapointment.

  • @psychodamned "Abuse and disappointment" That is an interesting analysis of this film. Although I found many of the sexual scenes didn't quite ring true! They should have been more stylised and I like very much the films of Liliana Calvani

  • When I first saw this movie, I was very much impressed by the playing of Dirk Bogarde : the scene of the opera is amazing. This film seems to float in a fantomatic atmosphere. Miss Rampling is simply amazing in that role. And the ballet scene, extract from Orphée et Eurydice is magnificent.

    great Movie, great actors

    Regards from France

    R.I.P. Dirk Bogarde

  • I absolutely agree with Mr. Wank..ers? statement, no doubt.

Bogarde and Rampling, are playing those two roles as good as possible, and that scene is just fabulous, I must admit Ive never seen anything like it.

RIP? Is Mr Bogarde dead? RIP Herefrom also then.

    -V

  • Yes Dirk Bogarde died a few years ago, just after his last movie : Daddy Nostalgy, (B. Tavernier), which was shooted in Sanary, France, just near my town on the french Riviera.

  • italian dancer now coreographer amedeo amodio

  • @pediatrapaola yes he was very strong dancer, and his devotion to this eros/tanatos combined choreo is amazing!

    Such a haunting movie!!!!!

  • Very erotic male dancer throught the point of view of a female director!

  • amedeo amodio former danseur etoile opera of rome now coreographer great demicaracter dancer

  • Thank you :)

  • Amedeo Amodio's dancing is breathtaking

  • @wolland75 saw him many times at his time, powerful caracter dancer, great tecnique too

  • i saw this in the early 70's and am reminded of Blue Velvet, scenes borrowed,u might say.

  • I always remembered this scene from this movie.

    So great.

Did you guys know Bogarde, had an affair with the actress Capucine, and seriously considered marriage with her. She eventually, threw herself off a building because of him.

    Has anyone else heard this?

  • Can anyone tell me what music this is?

  • It's "Dance of the Furies", from the second act of Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice.

  • Thanks!

  • Actually, it's two pieces by Gluck - Dance of the Furies is preceded by a piece from another opera of his, Don Juan. It's the third "track" of the first act (Andante).

  • Well, Don Juan is a ballet.

  • And The dance of furies was originally from that ballet, later he reused it in his Orphée et Eurydice.

  • Ah, thanks for making that clear.

  • as this song is called???

  • nuns and nazis; a lot of these movies came out in the 70s, with plenty of nudity.

  • Amazing work of art. this film is a masterpiece.

speaking of that, does anyone know where I can get it for under 30 dollars? everywhere I look they want my arms for it.

  • Right now you can get it for about 22 $ at Amazon, and quite possibly cheaper somewhere else.

  • I remember first seeing this film during 1974 I believe - it depressed me and gave me nightmares - now many years on - it is a startling film full of atmosphere and strange - still leaves a residue of something that I carry around with me - even after this short clip. Can never make up my mind about the late Sir Dirk Bogarde - something totally ambivalent about him even in his books! But he often leaves me with a feeling of sadness!

  • Hello, what you said about Bogarde is true. I've been reading his final volume of autobiography, I believe is called "A walk from Harrods". It's saddening the way his happy life in France ended and moved back to London due to his illness.

  • @Saffron1947 Do you think it is alright to watch by yourself? or would you advise seeing this with someone...i.e is it very graphic? I want to watch it but want to be aware of graphic scenes

  • @Saffron1947 It is very moving. I first saw it in the 90's and it failed to be dated. Love your name by the way

  • @SaffronSugar I adore the name Saffron - thank you for appreciating it. It is the name of one of my three dogs - Saffron is a German Braque. Curious you should comment on the Night Porter - I watched it again last week - it has a strange power and when it was first released many countries attempted to ban it. You should read some of Sir Dirk Bogarde's autobiographies and also his novels - many dark themes are contained in them. Are there any films now that people would like to ban?

  • @SaffronSugar Saffron Sugar - I hope that you have a pleasant weekend!

  • Thank you for posting this! Very powerful scene from a powerful movie, especially if you go in not knowing a thing about the plot. The Ballet captures the latent S&M subtext of the SS. Gluck's opera is beautiful.

  • And I thought the Nazi's wanted to destroy all homosexuals..?

  • Comment removed

  • why would 'gayness' prevent you from loving the movie? dont get the 'although'. the whole film's steeped in s&m anyway whatever your views

  • Sublime.

  • When I first saw this scene, I thought it was a Jewish prisoner who was forced to dance for his captors.

  • thanks!

  • does anybody knows what is that music? who is the auther? thank you

  • Haunting scene: Dance du macabre in a Nazi abattoir.

  • Absolutely brilliant. Bought recently the movie on dvd. A film ahead of its time. Grasps brilliantly the psychology and decadence of Nazi culture.

  • Hmm, as someone who has studied the Nazis a bit, I would have to disagree. This film has nothing to do with Nazi psychology. It does have a lot to say about sadomasochism and fetishism, though, and it says it quite well.

  • As a historian I also studies Nazism. Indeed, the film has a lot to say about sm and fetishism. But Nazism itself of course was burded with these themes (and also with homo-eroticism). See for instance the brilliant psychoanalytic study (in German) of Klaus Theweleit, Männerphantasien. 2. Männerkörper. Zur Psychoanalyse des weissen Terrors (Frankfurt 1978) or recently Paula Diehl, Macht-Mythos-Utopie. Die Körperbilder der SS-Männer (Berlin 2005).

  • Interesting.

I'm a film studies major, not a historian, but I do think that Night Porter reflects a contemporary perspective on Nazism. See Sontag's article, "Fascinating Fascism." It moves into a discussion of how the SS uniform is fetishized in contemporary BDSM play. In Night Porter, the SS uniform is fetishized -- even the fact that Max is an SS officer points to this fact; why not a fellow prisoner? The cabaret scene is a very good example of this phenomenon.

  • An even better idea is to not waste time on Susan Sontag and never use words like "Fetishize" that are completely meaningless substitues for thought.

  • I posted the wonderful "Wenn Ich etwas wunschen dürfte" song sequence (with Charlotte Rampling) from this movie some time ago, but due to the hypocritical censorship in here, it was banned and taken off the site within half an hour. Too bad, their loss, but I encourage everyone to buy the excellent DVD version of it instead. It is great!

  • like hey, this is strangely right up my street.

  • My favourite film! Sorta little perverse. Liliana Cavani rulezz.

  • I <3 charlotte ramplings little boobies. This movie is perverted and scary but ultimately, gratifying for the rare viewer who can make it over the initial hurdle of it's contorversial subject matter and disturbing, transgressive premise. Yay Boobies!

  • this is my favorite of all Dirk Bogardes movies:)

  • thanks for posting!! post some Charlotte Rampling scenes too!
