I've read some discussions on this topic of why Filipinos in America deny being Asian. One Filipino said is it's because Filipinos would rather be Polynesians than to be Filipino. Is that right? Every Filipino party I have been to have Polynesian dancers but never do they have a traditional Filipino dance.

Filipinos are Asian NOT Pacific Islander because the Pacific Islands consist of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia and the Philippines does NOT fall under any of those categories. Taiwan, the South China Sea Islands, most of the islands of Indonesia, and Japan are ALL by the Pacific Ocean but are obviously not considered Pacific Islanders. Therefore, Filipinos are Asian. The United States Bureau even considers the Philippines as Asian.

It's usually the certain number of Fil-Ams who think it's cool to be associated with "HAWAIINS" so they call Filipinos as Pacific Islanders.
The U.S. and the Philippines does not even classify Filipinos as Pacific Islanders. These particular Fil-Ams don't really know about Filipino history, let alone Asians.

yea thats true i read that and also 50% of filipino people have chinese blood from b4 cuz if u dotn no yet.. around the 13th century chinese trade relations encouraged a LOT of chinese people to migrate there adn they did so like at that time the whole north part was a large about of chinese so when the spanish ruled they saw china asa threat for trade and cut them from migrating into the phils then it was either that they move back to china or they wud change their names to spanish lastnames

they call them PACIFIC and ISLANDER is b/c they live in ISLAND w/ the boarder of PACIFIC OCEAN. I hope this one help if not maybe it's time for you to study the PHILIPPINE History and Geography.

I'm filipino and chinese and I'm ASIAN. 1st Phil. is in SOUTH EAST ASIA, 2nd PACIFIC OCEAN IS JUST A body of H2O, 3rd Phil. is made up of DIFF. Island take note DIFF. it means a LOT. filipinos are p.islanders in terms of culture. yeah, i do see a difference between polys like samoan,tongans,and hawaiians and filipinos but do you realize there are many samoans and other polys with an asian look? i've seen samoan pics on photobucket, and some of the faces remind me of cambodians and filipinos...you know that dark southeast pug nosed,chubby face,big lips type of asian look...
cambos are still asian though but filos have both a physical and cultural connection with islanders

That is just like saying that the Filipinos are Asians because of their geography.
I do not agree with this statement at all, Because the Native Australians and the Philippine (as well as Malaysians, Indonesians, and other SE Asians) have the same root Polynesian ethnicity.
By this reasoning the Filipinos who live in America--or anywhere outside of the continent of Asia for that matter--are not Asian.

Technically speaking. No they are not. Ethnically they are about as asian as the native americans and the native australians on their respective regions.
However, if were are looking at the geography then I suppose you could say they are Asians in that respect.
