You don't have to like Bono, you just have to like the music and the message. And this is quite a message don't you think? And a frickin ridiculous vocal on this song, RAW emotion at it's best...you have to give him that.
Con este disco me hice U2 maniaco... me acuerdo que llegó a mi por un intercambio con un amigo en la prepa, yo le di un cassette de Milli Vanilli... vaya cosas, el mundo a partir de ahi es otro
Now, I really don't like Bono, but this is one of the best songs I've ever heard. U2 was a great band back in the day, and the drums on the end of this are a spiritual experience for me. It's like the ground and the sky opening up, and the final battle between Heaven and Hell is coming... I'm not even religious, but damn!
Hi there, I just wanted to say hi, you commented on my main page a while back like 5 months ago and I just figured out that these comments didn’t post into my messages, lol. So I hope that all is well and if you are interested I have a few videos I posted with my testimony, be well and may Christ who is worthy of praise bless you beyond measure. Sincerely,
@psphaxs7 The boy on the cover is Peter Rowen (brother of Bono's friend, Guggi , and now a renowned Irish photographer). He's also in the cover of War and The best of 1980-1990. Hope I've helped you, I'm sorry for my poor english, I'm argentinean.
@Sjero99 Guggi is a 'renowned' Irish painter/artist -not a photographer, though I doubt he would be renowned if he wasn't a mate of Bono's because his art and his brains are shit in equal measure.
Very powerful song. This is my favorite by U2. I said "goodbye" to U2 after Joshua Tree. Just seems like the social commentary wasn't there anymore and I think the commentary was what made the band something great. The song "Lemon" was the turning point that made me believe that U2 was gone.
I've hello and goodbye and hello again to U2 throughout. But War was the album back in '84(which was when I first heard it) that made me a lifelong U2 fan.

just reading all the comments below, I totally agree that after Joshua Tree, they went too commercialised, and lost something. I haven't bought any of their albums post Joshua Tree, but I was their biggest fan before that, had near enough everything of theirs, love all of their early stuff. This has to be one of my favourite songs, with Surrender, Wire, An Cat Dubh, Into the Heart etc etc, I could go on and on, but you know what i mean lol. Brings back great memories of my teens xx
See alot of comments around here. The Band on a whole is timeless. @5oulPower Totally agree, some of their best material ever is on their last three albums, 'Original of the Species' is just jaw droppingly brilliant, 'Yahweh' - how many times can the same word be sang with so many different inflections and each time sound so inspiring.
Zooropa and Pop were however low points, they really lost their way with those two albums in my opinion.

I snuck into a U2 show at the LA Sports Arena (Joshua Tree tour) I somehow ended up backstage and asked Bono why they never played "Like a Song" live. He said they captured something they could never recreate live. To bad, one of my favorite U2 songs
WAR= my birth into recorded music appreciation. [My Dad already had me into 'live music']... truly STUNNING, this album; even more so NOW, almost 30 years later {++just got my vinyl back from durance vile[storage, with a friend], get what's the first piece of wax going on the turntable???}
Hi fans. been a fan since 1983. I've read the comments & I am glad I am not the only one who feels pre-achtung baby was their better stuff. the last 20 years U2 has put out albums but so few classics. I believe when Joshua Tree took off, U2 may have actually lost what they were looking for. I appreciate all the causes the band has supported but do you remember I will follow, pride, october, tomorrow, rejoice, surrender & unforgettable fire? oh I can forget 40 & bad. thanks guys.
@TheRayTV Personally I think Rattle and Hum sent them a bit crazy, some of the music was excellent, with BB King and Gospel choirs, maybe that was the flipping point that made them slightly eccentric and attempting to take a new style, and doing it very badly
@amrichter357 Oh R&H is a classic, but possibly the fame from it flipped them to produce the muck that was Achtung baby and almost everything else since.
I still have their old albums, vinyl cassette and cd! just nothing after R&H cos i threw away Achtung Baby!
yes I would have to agree. vh1 classic showed r&h the other night and though I appreciate their love for america, elvis, american soul & Jesus Christ, I would love for bono & co to catch their snap and make music that meant something. back in 1983/84, KSBJ, a houston Christian radio station used to play them on sat nights w/other Christian bands that were more rock and roll. mind you, U2 used to have a lot of songs w/Christian influences & references.

@TheRayTV They've always had a religious undertone, so to speak, not many rock stars get Audiences with the pope, in truth their ideals are almost Gandhi like, all religions pray to the same god, so discriminating or killing someone from a different religion, because of their belief is the biggest sin of all. However as they were all raised Catholic and Bono definitely still practices, they relate mainly to christians, which is not what they are about, it's just what they were born with.
@martilook I've been a fan since 1982. their new stuff is ok. I've seen them 5 times post joshua tree/80s and they play few song from that era. this new tour in nz/au, they are playing scarlet. heritage U2 fans should like that. classic edge guitar and a slight (no debate intended) return to their Spiritual upbrings (sans adam). welcome to U2, if it's only 3 years, think of the many years/songs you have to catch up.

Feeling the same way dude, actung baby was a bit dodgy as well, pre joshua tree for me. I love thier shows but they lost the passion they had back in the day.
Pop was a disgrace, remember new years day and bloody sunday in the early 80's...wow, like a song is a personal fav and out of control
@madtnt ah wire from 1984 unforgettable fire. I think that is their best work ever! pride, elvis presley & america, 4th of july, promenade, indian summer sky & of course, bad. sad to say, they didn't or haven't played pride much on this current tour. I hope they come again to houston after the mexican shows but who knows!
@TheRayTV we must be round the same age bro...cuz thats about the time i was rockin my cons..trench coat..bandanas..fadora hat..ridin a skate board in nyc vill..rockin u2 in the big ol hvy walkman..lol and def. to me from beginings to the joshua tree..was their best. rattle and hum which alot of ppl forget about..was good too but i think it was a transition albumn for them...almost like an echo of JT that just didnt scream loud enough. JT from where the streets to mothers...they did not stop
@likyaright I'll be 42 on 10 jan but a U2 fan since 1983 when I first heard NYD. I'm partial to TUF which I think is their best. I like JT and those after but I am love edge's ringing guitar, larry's drumming & adam's bass. I'm just old school U2 I guess. forgive me but I measure them against the lads from liverpool. JT was a good album and R&H is too but some of the work after that well, commercialism and I wish U2 would get back to where they once belong.
@TheRayTV - TBH, ever since they got Wizard Eno on board in '84, their albums have been patchy. The last few tracks of TUF are mostly tedious (with the notable exception of Bad - but MLK?!). Joshua Tree has its duller moments (Red Hill Mining Town, for instance), Achtung Baby was brilliant in parts, but, again, there was too much filler. Zooropa was uniformly dreadful. Pop is actually underrated IMHO. The two after that were good but patchy, and the last one was just an embarrassment.
@TheRayTV Same here 1983 I found this album and it made me want to be a musician. I danced around my room for at least a year, my Brother was like what do you see in this band, I was like they are the most original band ever, they're awesome. When Joshea Tree came out he would play it everyday, I walked in his room and said "I told ya" and walked away laughing
@TheRayTV I think it's called nostalgia, you just haven't matured with the band to enjoy the more complex compositions they composed as they evolved, it's like stating you preferred all the early Beatles material, it was all very melodic, but it wasn't anywhere near as sophisticated and meaningful as their later work.
@KenfromDublin "matured w/the band" I think I have. since 1991 when they released AB, I have been to every U2 in houston & 1 in dallas. sometimes the first & second time they came texas. the only tour I missed was pop but I was in the hospital. if you have the read the previous posts on here, I am not the only one who misses their earlier work yet enjoys (if to be modest) their more recent work. let's keep it peaceful here but how long have you been a fan?
@TheRayTV I'm right there with ya. In the 8th grade our teacher brought in 'Boy' and I've been a fan since then. When this was released I hit the fucking roof and have not looked back.
@TheRayTV ...too true, the zenith was The Unforgettable Fire. Everything after that was a dip down hill. Admitably it was a very slow dip, with several flat bits, but downhill all the same.
the ultimate protest song!!!! i live in latinamerica and i go to an university in which there are people who still think that the way to fight for the rights of the poor is the violence... they can't see that the answer is in everyone of us, and that's what this song is about. I really would like everyone of them to listen to this piece and realize that TWO WRONGS WON'T MAKE IT RIGHT.
War will always be my fave U2 album but the first 5 albums are all just golden... after Joshua Tree, well... some good stuff but it pales compared to this era!!!
@delfin7461 I agree.....This is what I keep trying to tell people! Those who didn't live through that time don't seem to understand how truly unique and special they really were!
I prefer the early era too, but achtung babe and zooropa have some masterpieces too. They just left pure rock for new souds, technology...
Lyrics to changed. Instead of saying don t watch tv, they wnet to watch more tv... if you understand what i mean... A different approach, deeper lyrics.
@delfin7461 Why limit yourself? They said so much with "Boy," "War," "October." and of course "Pride (In the Name of Love)" that picking a "favorite," would be doing not only an injustice to yourself, but to U2 and the great history of music itself.
Tbh I love what Brian Eno did with U2, but there's just something about the work Steve Lillywhite did with them that marks it out as classic Rock and something that they have failed to reproduce since the heady days of the 1980's when we all wore peace flag badges on our jackets. Come back home U2, you've lost your way. Great song, brings back so many memories :)
@spaticus09 not even a few songs from AB, Zoo, Pop, ATYCLB, HTDAAB or NLOTH? the music isn't completely not worth listening to? I feel war & TUF are like part 1 & 2. war being europe & TUF - usa. thoughts & rebuttal?
@TheRayTV - NLOTH was a fucking embarrassment, and so was Zooropa. The rest were all good up to a point, some better than that. I think Pop is hugely underrated, actually.
@ivanko150585 Its actually not a rebel song, its an anti-rebel or at least anti-conflict song. Easy to think its a rebel song though cause the song (particularly larry's drums, which sound AWESOME in this song) captures the anger of the Irish youth at the time. Things were bad and people wanted change, U2 captures that frustration. But the lines like "Angry words won't stop a fight/Two wrongs don't make a right/A new heart is what I need/Oh God make it bleed" are anti-conflict
One of my favorites...

WAR= my birth into recorded music appreciation. [My Dad already had me into 'live music']... truly STUNNING, this album; even more so NOW, almost 30 years later {++just got my vinyl back from durance vile[storage, with a friend], get what's the first piece of wax going on the turntable???}

Hi fans. been a fan since 1983.

30Ciaran 1 year ago
@30Ciaran Give Rattle and Hum another shot. "Angel of Harlem" and "All I Want Is You" are two of the best tracks they ever recorded.
amrichter357 1 year ago
@amrichter357 Oh R&H is a classic, but possibly the fame from it flipped them to produce the muck that was Achtung baby and almost everything else since.
I still have their old albums, vinyl cassette and cd! just nothing after R&H cos i threw away Achtung Baby!
Peace

@30Ciaran
yes I would have to agree. vh1 classic showed r&h the other night and though I appreciate their love for america, elvis, american soul & Jesus Christ, I would love for bono & co to catch their snap and make music that meant something. back in 1983/84, KSBJ, a houston Christian radio station used to play them on sat nights w/other Christian bands that were more rock and roll. mind you, U2 used to have a lot of songs w/Christian influences & references.

@TheRayTV I think new stuff is as good as the old one. But I fell in love only 3 years ago.
martilook 1 year ago

Pop was a disgrace, remember new years day and bloody sunday in the early 80's...wow, like a song is a personal fav and out of control

madtnt 1 year ago

JT from where the streets to mothers...they did not stop
likyaright 1 year ago
@likyaright I'll be 42 on 10 jan but a U2 fan since 1983 when I first heard NYD. I'm partial to TUF which I think is their best. I like JT and those after but I am love edge's ringing guitar, larry's drumming & adam's bass. I'm just old school U2 I guess. forgive me but I measure them against the lads from liverpool. JT was a good album and R&H is too but some of the work after that well, commercialism and I wish U2 would get back to where they once belong.
TheRayTV 1 year ago
@TheRayTV - TBH, ever since they got Wizard Eno on board in '84, their albums have been patchy. The last few tracks of TUF are mostly tedious (with the notable exception of Bad - but MLK?!). Joshua Tree has its duller moments (Red Hill Mining Town, for instance), Achtung Baby was brilliant in parts, but, again, there was too much filler. Zooropa was uniformly dreadful. Pop is actually underrated IMHO. The two after that were good but patchy, and the last one was just an embarrassment.
EccentricRichard 1 year ago
@TheRayTV Same here 1983 I found this album and it made me want to be a musician. I danced around my room for at least a year, my Brother was like what do you see in this band, I was like they are the most original band ever, they're awesome. When Joshea Tree came out he would play it everyday, I walked in his room and said "I told ya" and walked away laughing
CRASHMAGNET2011 1 year ago
@TheRayTV I think it's called nostalgia, you just haven't matured with the band to enjoy the more complex compositions they composed as they evolved, it's like stating you preferred all the early Beatles material, it was all very melodic, but it wasn't anywhere near as sophisticated and meaningful as their later work.
KenfromDublin 1 year ago
@KenfromDublin "matured w/the band" I think I have. since 1991 when they released AB, I have been to every U2 in houston & 1 in dallas. sometimes the first & second time they came texas. the only tour I missed was pop but I was in the hospital. if you have the read the previous posts on here, I am not the only one who misses their earlier work yet enjoys (if to be modest) their more recent work. let's keep it peaceful here but how long have you been a fan?
TheRayTV 1 year ago

@delfin7461
TheMotogavlas84 1 year ago
@delfin7461 what about Achtung Baby? All That You Can't Leave Behind? Zooropa (the song mostly) those are all masterpieces too.
njasut 1 year ago

What a musical masterpiece this album "War" was...
Maybe that's because in that time Bono, Edge and cia actually cared about making good music, that's was the most important thing for them...
Nowadays when will Bono compose another song like this? We know the answer: never more.

njasut 1 year ago
@spaticus09 not even a few songs from AB, Zoo, Pop, ATYCLB, HTDAAB or NLOTH? the music isn't completely not worth listening to? I feel war & TUF are like part 1 & 2. war being europe & TUF - usa. thoughts & rebuttal?
TheRayTV 1 year ago
@TheRayTV - NLOTH was a fucking embarrassment, and so was Zooropa. The rest were all good up to a point, some better than that. I think Pop is hugely underrated, actually.

Big rebel song!
ivanko150585 2 years ago 2
But U2 were too big and nice to be 'rebels' by 'respected' standards.
HarmonicsExplorer 1 year ago
@ivanko150585 Its actually not a rebel song, its an anti-rebel or at least anti-conflict song. Easy to think its a rebel song though cause the song (particularly larry's drums, which sound AWESOME in this song) captures the anger of the Irish youth at the time. Things were bad and people wanted change, U2 captures that frustration. But the lines like "Angry words won't stop a fight/Two wrongs don't make a right/A new heart is what I need/Oh God make it bleed" are anti-conflict
