  • This is the kind of BS that keeps people from trying to make bread. Bread making is easy and don’t require any philosophical, spirituality or mystical understanding. Just follow some simple steeps and any one cam make good bread.

  • Wow...now that's a baker

  • The literal, the metaphorical, the political (or ethical) and the mystical (spiritual). Cool...time to do some thinking on that

  • Can appreciate his passion to a point... , though one might expect in his over the top passion to slice into the loaf, unzip his fly and defile that loaf. Now that's what I call the staff of life!

  • UNCLE DOUG, I LOVE YOUR NEW MILD SAUCE.

    RICK

  • you should have titled this video the science and art of baking bread. i find it very interesting because i see a lot of chemistry going on in bread making.

  • thats an ugly loaf of bread haha. But anyway i use one of his recipes for my whole wheat bread. its the most fantastic bread ive ever had.

  • I Love this video, Peter Reinart is a powerful man, love the explanations and simplification of explaining on how to bake bread. Very inspirational!!!

  • he is so passionate!!

  • @pachamamaRules: Exactly! It's such a joy to watch and hear someone speak who is passionate about their subject.

  • Much Love From New Orleans Mr. Pete ! U are a true artist ! -God Bless

  • omg I just want to rip into a plain loaf of bread...never thought I'd say that

  • A true artisan.

  • He can't help it. He's a former monk.

  • nogoodman! 12 to bakers>>> think about it, HELLO...hint... eggs, donuts.Pff fer crying out loud (or should I have said for Christ's sake), take your off-subject hoopla elsewhere. I'm going to break bread OOOHHHH NOOOO! It's everywhere. Oh yes, you forgot to mention the last word of this video. RISE, another Christian reference perhaps...LOL

  • It's not off-topic, but an on-topic opinion. I'm feeling very uneasy about religion and profession of baking being mixed.

    'Brother Juniper's Bread Book'

    'Peter Reinhart's Artisan Breads Fast'

'Bread Upon the Waters: A Pilgrimage Toward Self-Discovery and Spiritual Truth'

    are books of his.

  • Feeling uneasy...??? Hmm...about religion and profession of baking being mixed Hmmm. Why would this cause you to feel uneasy. If you are religious, enjoy the religious references. If you aren't religious, dismiss them. If PR's approach bothers you, and you want to watch videos about baking, tune into something else. There is plenty out there. Try to enjoy yourself it makes life easier and a lot more fun :O)

  • Your point of view is interesting and having your comment in mind while listening to his speech made me think about the way he speaks and his metafores.

I think every speaker reaches out in the best way they can. He is probably someone who is very interested in religion and has found a way to combine that with his passion for bread. It is also a way to catch your listeners attention by not just talking science.

His method might not be appeal to everyone. =)

  • i like bread :)

  • Fantastic idea, when can I try that bread

  • wow. i guess now i know why i cant make bread. i had no idea it was such an art.

  • BTW: clay is not "adam" in Hebrew.

Clay in Hebrew is CHIMAR. and adam in English is earth/land/soil/ground.

Nevertheless , the man can talk...

  • I can't believe he made bread sound SO interesting! I was surprised that i watched that whole thing h hahahha

  • This mans books are amazing, I actually read them for fun. I have no idea what that says about me.....

  • omG....im so hungry now....

  • Hmm....

    *slowly starts to get hungry*

    .. Damnit....

  • *runing down stairs * BREAD

  • This guy wrote a GREAT breadbaking book, The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread . Check it out. We've been using it for a year.

  • hes a Grass murderer MUAHA!

Hes making me hungry too :D

  • wow that's a lot of big talking. i wonder if the bread actually tastes good.

  • I love good bread, but half of this talk was totally pointless. The only interesting thing in the second half was connection with beer. Lagers are made only from barley though. Not from wheat.

  • There's wheat lagers. Sam Adams Winter Lager is a wheat lager. He did ramble though, somewhat interesting. I mean, who doesn't like bread.

  • I run a small family bakery The Master Baker in Winchester England.Iv been sourcing Whole grain bread from a local water mill built originally by the Saxons and am looking for something like this to make great wholegrain bread, thanks this vid has been an inspiration.

  • I can smell the bread through my monitor!

  • good speaker. next one:- about rice!

  • I was listening to him waiting to test he's bread ALMOST! then i realized that would not happen. Internet is almost great

  • taste? he does taste it at the end of the lecture

  • Me not him "I" I know he tested he's brea at the end

  • Me not him "I" I know he tested he's brea at the end

  • ah I see

  • This guy really knows his bread!!!!

  • TED never disappoints.

  • The spirituality of bread! Interesting!

  • Give us this day our daily Ted.

  • Lets see him talk like that about Gluten-Free bread.

  • Wow, I gained new insights into the origin of religion and enjoyed a exiting chemistry lesson. Thank you indeed.

  • I can't believe he can make bread sound like a chemistry lecture. Why did I watch this? I feel like crying.

  • Beautiful. And thanks for the Baker's blessing. :)

    Very good spread as well.

  • <3'd it

  • From high tech and marvels of science...to...bread from a portly baker...what is going on? Did TED run out of ideas?

In defense of the video though...that bread looked yummy... he seemed enthused. Who knows...maybe he will create an anti-cancer bread.

  • White bread gives you cancer! XDDD

  • There are plenty of design elements to his epoxy bread. And the yeast burps and sweat was funny, which is totally entertainment.

  • Oh well, this is the Taste3 conference, so I guess it's really more about food than anything else, heh...

Waiting for the palm springs videos to be uploaded!

  • this is pretty interesting, didn't know that their was so much to know about making bread, also i like the fact that he's so into what he's talking about :P

  • Lmao, you guys can't really take a joke can you? ._. I am well aware that it isn't hard to be the first to comment on a TED video, hense why I wrote a sentence instead of simply saying "FIRST" shesh. You're right Metroid, more people should watch and comment on these videos.

  • *yawn*

  • I miss interesting TED talks....

  • I just love the taste of wheat bread, white bread is just so plain and sugary somewhat like he describes at the beginning there. I really appreciate all kinds of flavors, and seldom do I go for white bread, it's just so plain.

  • also, after 15 tries of a new food, you'll develope a new sense of taste. and should you neglect eating another food, you'll lose your taste affinity for that food. taste can be learned and unlearned :3

  • SirBanon, Could you point me to more information about this? I've picked this up intuitively, but I would absolutely love information about the science behind the changing of taste preference. I have family members who could benefit.

  • keithguh, ya you can look up dr joel fuhrman. my favorite dietician :3 but i'm not too keen to the science of learning. i just know that your skin will grow thicker when you work with abrasive materials, you body can become addicted to dancing if you do it on a regular basis, your ears will learn to like/tolerate music after 15+ hearings and that all your body has a sort of intellegence where habbits are learned and unlearned. we are very impermanent and changing.

  • Could you really be a noob?

    YEP

    we don't care joeah

  • If no one cares why is his comment rated so low, why is yours rated so high, and why did you comment? It seems someone has a marked interest in his comment and is expressing their view in most any way at their disposal.

  • Nice english.

  • no.
