But this is not during Spanish times. This is video depicts the American Commonwealth era. Spanish times ended in 1898 when Spain ceded the islands to the US after it won the Spanish-American War. Interestingly enough, Spanish language and newspapers were thriving at that time. It was spoken by many educated filipinos and wasn't solely spoken by those with Spanish blood. Manila was a tri-lingual city.

  • imagine they used to call manila the queen city of the pacific. damn.

  • Habng Nanonood ako Ng Historys Ng Philippines Naiiyak Akoh..

  • I didn't know Philippines was influenced By AMERICANS And SPANISH

  • @mikeisorena So was Cuba and Porto Rico but Porto Rico is still an American Colony They have an option to be a state. And Guam as well its an Asian country as will

  • Damn I Dint KNOW THT PHILIPPINES WAs influenced By the Americans AND SPanish

Look like Ferrol in some times. Mi familia recuerda agradáblemente a Filipinas y a sus habitantes.

  • We should've let the Americans take over for good. Poverty in the PHilippines would've been a lot less prominent. Damn shame....

  • @marikitna YEA So That Filipino are considered AMERICANS

  • I don't know what's wrong w/ filipino politicians. Why can't they keep the country stable like what we have on the early centuries. Now I know why Jose Rizal doesn't completely agree w/ complete liberation of the country from the Spaniards. I guess the Philippines need more lesson to learn.

  • @ASIANBOYZPRODUCTION well at first he didn't, but he did when he saw how oppressive Spain was, remember what happened to Spain right after Philippine revolution, they were going downhill, a dictator showed up, but then they recovered fortunately. The Philippines has history of forming a great prosperous govt., perhaps not unified, but among it's several kingdoms showed this. Perhaps it's not our freedom, but more the bad influences that were given to us, from both westerners.

  • Its not shot on the spanish time.... its american era!

  • noon pa lang masikip na sa Manila. Sumobra n lng ngayon obviously because of the population growth.

  • Manila is still great and magnificent today

  • the philippines is more like latin america and the pacific islands then southeast asia.

  • I wonder how the Philippines and the Filipino would be like if they never got independence from Spain /:

  • @ccastillo2413 Worse

  • THE "GRINGOS" WASHING DE MEANT A FILIPINS PIPOL VS SPANISH CULTURE BECAUSE USA AND UNITED KINGDOM HERT THE IMPRESIONANT AND PERSISTENT THE SPANISH CULTURE. VIVA ESPAÑA, HISPANOAMERICA, FILIPINAS, GUAM, MICRONESIA, GUINEA ECUATORIAL, SAHARA OCCIDENTAL, IFNI Y EL RIF UNIDOS !!!!!!

  • THE "GRINGOS" WASHING DE MEANT A FILIPINS PIPOL VS SPANISH CULTURE BECAUSE USA AND UNITED KINGDOM HERT THE IMPRESIONANT AND PERSISTENT THE SPANISH CULTURE. VIVA ESPAÑA, HISPANOAMERICA, FILIPINAS, GUAM, MICRONESIA, GUINEA ECUATORIAL, SAHARA OCCIDENTAL, IFNI Y EL RIF UNIDOS !!!!!!

  • @gavoparo10000 DE ACUERDO! Filipinas belongs to the Hispanic World! Let us all now go back HOME to our real family, con nuestro hermanos verdaderos, los Ibero-Americanos, y con nuestra madre patria España!

  • @gavoparo10000 wherever the colonialists went, murder, poverty ensued, thats the truth of the matter

  • @lunafringe10 yes- compare Okinawa with the rest of Japan- a very clear example of a place that should be thriving, except for the military occupation of a colonial power.

  • may cable-cars pala dati ang manila! astiggg!

  • @07:38 The 1920s version of the modern day Jeepney

  • Peace time

  • amazing video... wrong title lang.. ^^

  • depota ang bobo spanish time daw bobo

  • spanish amp0ta may kotse na!?

  • Makes me real happy to see this and also quite mad to think our government wasted all these grandeur so they can have a government run by people who were related to past leaders and are not even worth to be in their position. That's not democracy or a republic that's oligarchy or a shadow-monarchy.

  • this is the PreWar era

  • No offence guys but I prefer the look of Manila since 1940's than today. The clothing of the people, environment, antique buildings.

  • @iFlyFS I agree, i want to go back to that time or even further

  • @iFlyFS most of them are destroyed by the america japan war *WW2* time changes + coruption... GG end...

Look like Ferrol in some times. Mi familia recuerda agradáblemente a Filipinas y a sus habitantes.

  • @iFlyFS go back to fucking 40's!!

  • @iFlyFS

I like the old Manila too... but the antique buildings were gone...the Japanese destroyed many of them... :(

  • @coerdelion13

    No, America bombed it.

  • FAIL! spanish time daw.

  • This is the American period (or the Philippine commonwealth era).

Judging the cars, my guess is that this video is from around 1930s to 1941

  • This is like Europe in asia!!! I'm impressed!

  • this is during the commonwealth period... observe the cars... it's model is between the 1930's-1940's

  • Nice footage but I honestly don't like the way they dress themselves...before. Isn't Philippines a hot country?

  • @Myro11verity I take its because the spaciousness of the city makes it less warmer than it is today. A dense city actually generates a lot of heat.

  • @Myro11verity There were more trees then and much cooler climate a hundred of years ago. My grandfather who was an American missionary aide in the Mountain province told me were still snow falls in the summit of the highest mountains of the P.I. during those era. I still keep photos of my parents during the 50's and 60's wearing coats and ties and they told me the climate was not as hot as today.

  • Im more proud to be a Filipino. now!!

  • Philippines was amazing back then. but now it isn't

I really do love Pinas, but i't so different now

Pinas was so clean. now it isn't

and all these corrupt government happenings these days. =_=

*sigh, wish we could go back.

  • parang mas maganda ang Pilipinas dati LOL napakalinis and classy yung dating.

Very classy. <3

  • that river transport was so cute... why it wasn't preserved?? it can be compared to that of italy if i'm not mistaken.

  • @yoshlikescharice Because most, if not, all the water ways those river transports could go through have been land filled

  • Spanish, American and Japanese Conquerers failed to conquer

  • @MrDuduyski They were the most fail, spanish destroying our culture(assholes), Americans being liars and barbaric, Japanese for the most hideous warcrimes and failure to control their armies.

  • @MrDuduyski No they actually did succeed to conquer.

*sigh :l

  • 1898-1940 was under American Rule.!

  • thank you! ^_^

    God bless the Philippines.

  • thank you! ^_^

  • Maganda pa ang noon kaysa ngayon

  • The Battle of Manila Bay is stage play.

  • COOL !!!

  • @izzymafe thanks for sympathy.. :( hope the world should unified without greediness, discrimination and being selfish.. the world will be happy to live ..:)

  • we're being colonized because of my country's location :) you have access around the world through sky and land because it is open to the east and west :) good base for aiming power to rule the world(colonizers knew that).. as simple as that ,, my professor told me that :D

  • This video is great! I love it. It shows here that Filipinos act educated than the new breed we have now. I just wish that we continue to act educated and well-mannered (even if you went to school or not) in all that we do in this country particularly in solving problems and not raising voices and too much hatred when one idea is better than the others.

  • hey primo espanya i have a personnal question for you, did you're country really joined the NAZIs?

  • yes the americans came here to liberate the philippines, why because there are still american prisoners POWs are in prison camps.

  • king phillip: the sun never sets in my kingdom!

he is reffering o the philippines, when spain is night time, hilippines is daytime.

  • ESPANA NEVER LEFT LAS ISLAS FILIPINAS,THE HISPANIC CULTURE IS ALIVE AND RUNS IN THE BLOOD OF PEOPLE,NAME.LAST NAME,CHURCHES,MONUMENTS,RIVERS,CITIES,SAINTS,CATOLICISMO,IN THE BEAUTY OF THE WEMANS,PORTS,POLITICIANS,IN THE SOULS OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE,IN THE FORM OF THE GOBIERNO,IN ITS HISTORY AS NATION.PEOPLE VERY PASIONATE,PROUD.PATRIOTICO,RELIGIOUS.BREVE,INTELECTUALES...ETC ETC..PEOPLE VERY PROUD TO BE HSIPANIC DECENDENT..AND ROOTS..VIVA ESPANA Y LAS FILIPINAS POR SIEMPRE.AMEN

  • @slickspic180 You are stupid. Eres un estupido. Los filipinos no son hispanos. okay? the only reason why they have spanish last names is because they were FORCED to pick out a spanish last names. filipinos are racially confused.

  • @lui920 but Spanish names sound 10x better than American last names ;))

  • Wow..pretty modern and advance for that time. Cars, Light rail, and working traffic lights? Most places here in the US now don't even have that. lol

  • what a beautiful Country...Calesas..vintage Cars..

  • all i know spanish colony and american time fucked us all up.... i mean erase our identity.. i mean what its been like if anish didnt colonize us?

  • if world war2 didn't happen, i wonder f it's still da same.

  • @keichii9 if the americans didnt came to the philippines and didnt defeat the japs, the japs would treat us as slaves

  • @LeoAlonzoHodgson if the Americans never colonized the Philippines the Japanese would not have tried to invade in the first place.

  • The title is misleading. This pre-war Manila to be precised,

    Manila during the Commonwealth era.

  • If the US didn't colonize the Phillippines, country would have been the first in Asia free from European colonization.

  • The spanish teach the filipino how to corrupt that is why the philippines is in top 5 corruption in the whole world.

  • @M4A108 the first one is my country ... indonesia , dutch give us the talent

Greetings from Mexico

  • @Supermelancolico I'm sorry i can't understand what are you talking about.

  • @M4A108 Sorry, but the most corrupt country in the world are the United States, who not only betrayed the independence to take over the country, but even sacrificed the people using it as cannon fodder during the Japanese invasion. If we add that away to the islands of their Hispanic roots by requiring the use of their horrible English ... well there you have the results. Greetings from Mexico

  • @amethyst032 Your just jealous because we supply the Philippines with weaponry, and they could take part in our military developments :P

  • This is when Philippines was an American colony that's why the American flag was above the Philippine one.

  • The glory that was manila

  • Tsssk... Dumami, Nagparami, nagKAMKAM at naging gahaman.

  • No wonder, it was easy for the Americans to carpet bomb ancient Manila, the heart of the Pearl of the Orient during the Second World War!!!!!!! God Bless America!!!! TO "FREEDOM" AND "DEMOCRACY"!!!!!!!!! :)

  • @mikhailthegrinch you are so wrong. The japanes who the first carpet bomb the philippines island. which is 95% of manila was destroyed by japanes.

  • Comment removed

  • Is this how Manila was transformed after the United States plundered the Philippines' reserve in gold and silver worth, over one hundred billion U.S. dollars (according to witness Soledad Vital de Luna, second wife of the famous painter Juan Luna in her 1952 letter) during the Philippine-American War which resulted to 1.5 million Filipino casualties as a direct result of the war (according to the historian James B. Goodno, author of the Philippines: Land of Broken Promises)?????????????????????

  • @mikhailthegrinch yeah that's the reality. That's the main reason the U.S.A. should pay us due to the plundering they made to our country. The Philippine government should consider those as payments, not aid.

  • Yeah i once live there And smell fumes from jeeps and creeks full of garbage from squatters

  • This is not te Spanish time?

This video was under American Time!

  • @bayyagg I agree, but everything filmed was made in the Spanish era.

  • @benjioben

    Yep!

But the sight says "Manila During spanish time", it should have been Manila in the '20's or Spain Legacy!

  • @bayyagg of course not it is an american film and as such totally wrong

  • good time maybe

  • anyone notice how windy manila used to be? Now its like walking inside an oven...sigh...this is the Manila I wish I lived in.

  • i wonder what the philippines been like if spanish japanese american didnt fuck it all up,.. probably were successful.. too bad our country is iressistable they all want it..haha

  • @franzken you can't really include the Spanish in it, because this is a lot of what made the Philippines and its culture. The Japanese and Americans were the ones we could question "what if?" because their invasion and destruction were much recent and in the more modern era. The Japanese and Americans were basically interrupting the Philippines.

  • @lookscudkill it was like 60 years ago. it has nothing to do with the philippines nowadays. take note during the 1950s we are an Asian power rivaling to Japan.

  • @pcekeep, wrong. What the situation is now, is a result of the past, especially the more difficult times and crucial moments in history.

  • @lookscudkill result of the past? how come? Philippines become one of the top nations in Asia and in South East Asia. The situation now is only influenced by the crisis that happened during Marcos dictatorship and during Aquino's term. Our Nation had only started to recover during Ramos term but again fell during Erap's term. History may have influenced our culture but not what is happening to us now. Will you dreamers wake up!? Its your fault in just dreaming and not doing anything why this

  • @lookscudkill nation has turned into mess. why not look yourselves a better job. or a business that could provide jobs for people rather than criticizing the government for its ill deeds or its bad images? no nation has no bad image. keep that in mind!

  • @pcekeep

Ur right abut that! My granfather told me that there are lots of Jap illegal imigrant in Manila during that time, mostly those Japs works as dishwasher in restaurants! My Lolo told me about it!

  • @bayyagg LOL! During the occupation, many of those Japanese dishwashers suddenly appeared as military officers. It turned out they were advance parties of the Japanese Imperial Army.

  • @zofronio

Hope those jap geisha prostitute from that time wouldn't dare to wear those uniforms!

    Hahahhahaa!

  • American Occupation or the Commonwealth years of the Philippines not "Spanish Time". Know your history.

  • QUE BONITA!!!!!

  • Something made the philippines so wrong , its so sad. But i'm still so proud of my country.

  • arrabal, casco, intramuros, extramuros..are words used in panama for location where poor people were located..arabal , casco was the casco antiguo or the new city of panama founded by spaniards after morgan pirate destroyed the old city of panama, intramuros was the location into of casco or spanish city where rich people lived..extramuros is the zone populated by medium class people..i beleieve that i have listened these words in your interesting documental..congratulations

  • can you put subtitles in english or in spanish for this interesting documental film?

  • There were many, Secreto de Confesión, Las Dulces Mestizas, El Milagro del Nazareno de Quiapo, etc. all in Spanish and all box office top hits, specially in the US and South America.

Most of them gone after the bombing of Manila during WWII

  • @RafaelMinuesa I meant contemporary films done within, say, the last decade.

  • Try "Lola" from Philippine director Brillante Mendoza, who got awarded best director at the Cannes Film Festival last year.

It tells the stories of 2 grandparents whose grandchildren are on opposite sides of one crime — a mobile phone robbery-turned-murder. One tries to raise money to bail the perpetrator; the other seeks funds to bury the victim.

  • @RafaelMinuesa I suppose I should be even more clear. A period film set in the first half of the twentieth century somewhere in the Philippines but made within the past decade.

  • Oh I see, the Dark Period ...

I don't know of any. And if you find any it is bound to be full of inexact historical references. It's taboo here.

I know that Bigfoot Entertainment is about to start the shooting of a film based on the Filipino-American War, during the beginning of the century

  • 2010 Philippines is a shit country..bad smell ,rat infested, many people hungry, many street children begging for food and money...
