Div. Eight, The New Jersey was Halsey was on as his Flag Ship when the typhoon sunk some of our smaller ships, the Jersey and Missouri wer the newest Gun Boat in the U.S. Navy at that time.
I like the nature of the work you have done, I will say that a voice over would really enhance this and provide a bit more insight into the man and the years on this ship. You don't need more than a couple of minutes instersperese through out. It deserves it.......but good job. Spent my first 13 years avoiding sea duty, only after crossing over to the Army did I learn the rewards of operating smal vessels (tugs)
Respect to your Grandpa. My late Father served as a Minesweeping officer in the British Royal Naval Patrol Service 1939-1947, helping to clear German (and sometimes British) sea mines around the coast of the UK. The ships were usually converted Trawlers.Conditions were hard, his worst experiences were sweeping mines on the Russian Convoys to Murmansk. The' little ships' carried out a task essential to the war effort.
My grandfather was a fireman aboard three minesweepers in the China Sea. He served on the USS Threat, USS Impeccable and the USS Sway. Thanks for the video.

I once knew man , he crafted the hulls and beams of MS with steam bending and shaping. the work crew found out how much contractor was getting they ask for more money, they were threatened with change in their draft status from essential to 1a
great video, great man, and lucky family. you and your kids are lucky to have been loved by such a stand up man. im sure his legacy will be carried on by the future generations of your family. my grandpa was a wwii veteran and is DEEPLY missed.
Wonderful tribute to your father in law. It was nice to see the pics of the YMS, my father was the XO on PCS-1426 in both Atlantic and Pacific theaters, which I think was the same type of ship that the YMS's were converted from.(PCS-Patrol Craft Sweeper). Small ships-110 feet long and did not ride well as I remember my father saying. Many thanks to your father in law for his service, keep the history alive.
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for making this video. My Dad was there at the same time and has told me how terrible the storm and the battle was. He was also on a Minesweeper so perhaps he knew your Dad. These are the first pictures I have ever seen as his were lost upon return to San Francisco. These men are heroes and it is important for all generations to remember what they did. You've done a GREAT job!!
my dad was in okinowa, the only thing he ever said was that coming into the orient was so beautiful. never spoke of the horrors of war. He met a friend of ours from pacific coast whom served on a ship that the nj had hit in the middle of the night. what a coincidence that was. Loved hearing them speak.
my dad was a plank owner on the ssnj at that time, he just passed three years ago, never spoke to us children about the war. before he got too ill, he was given his metals and got to board his ship with his children, never saw a man so proud. he couldnt go down but my brother got a picture for him of his only son, sitting on his bunk. Love you Dad, very proud of these men I am, all our soldiers
Was that typhoon the one Adm. Halsey got caught in? I believe his flagship was the New Jersey at the time and he kept his fleet on course through the storm. Nice work on your dedication to this sailor.
great tribute my grandfather served on HMS Penelope(HMS Pepperpot) and he was our whole families hero the Penelope ment the world to my granda he watched her being built and then was on her as she went down your grandad is a hero i can understand how much the grandkids kids miss him as i still miss my grandad and its been 17 years they all did there best also my cousin died on the 65th anniversary aged 3 of my grandads ship sinking i have total respect for your grandad RIP
Yes, your dad is a HERO and to have this much of him ina video is awesome. You are very lucky. I lost my dad coming up on one year this sept. So i know how damn hard it is. People like your dad are gone but not forgotten. I teared up watching this. I can imagine how hard this was to make. HEROS like him are few and far between now a days and he fought for us. Our freedom. its to bad that it so many have forgotten this.
Your Grandpa is a hero, and a great debt is owed to him and all the other men that fought, died, and did anything this country needed to stay free. God bless you Grandpa, you have a wonderful family, I am sure you must be proud of them.
Thanks for this . My late father was a Skipper Lieutenant in WW2 based at HMS Europa on the East coast of England. He was one of 'Harry Tates Navy' ex Fisherman but a Royal Navy reservist. He taught new recruits mine sweeping techniques.
i lived and worked in san diego [home port of 7th fleet]i met many of the navy personel who reffered to their ships as boats.from tincans to carriers,"boat" is just a pet name for their ships.
I just retired after spending the last 12 years in minewarfare. Nice video, the mine sweeping technology hasn't changed all that much. By the way I consider the YMS to be a ship not a boat.
Yes, you are correct, it is a SHIP, not a boat! My father-in-law always jokingly referred to it as his "boat", as it wasn't large enough to be a ship! He loved duty on that boat, his best stories are the ones from his Naval days. Their motto was "Wooden ships, Iron men", a pretty fitting motto I may say...Tim
Hello! YMS 291 is the boat featured in this video. My father-in-law is the man in the videos, he passed away in May of 2005. There are some great websites on the Internet about the YMS boats, you should check them out! It was not an easy duty, it was dangerous and many sailors on YMS boats lost their lives, your grandpa was one of the lucky ones.
Very moving and well done. It shows that ships of all sizes were engaged in WWII and all were important and served a purpose. If it were not for these men and women who served, but our not forgotten, the world would be a totally different place.
Thanks for the YMS video! I posted it to my blog at yms299.org about my grandfather who served in the Pacific.

Typhoon Cobra (which hit the 3rd Fleet) was earlier in the war. Three destroyers rolled over and sank with nearly all hands.
Typhoon Louise hit Okinawa, sank 12 ships and grounded 222.
