Everyone in his village now reviles him for this, and he starts losing his mind because he's left with no way to cope with the loss of his wife. It seems that at the end, he tries to turn back to Christianity, but he either can't re-believe in the God that abandoned him, or will not be accepted back into the church by the judgmental villagers.
