Like a a meteor or large land slide. There are other factors that could vary the amount of water, like how for out at sea is the impact...ex

if you look at the CGI between this and armageddon and deep impact and godzilla (1997) you see a big difference, but when you look at cgi between this, matrix and LOTR, which is early 2000's and now, not really a big difference... only thing that improved was south park, but movies, not really, the difference is now (in 2012) this 2004 cgi they can afford to put into shows on basic cable
