everyone who loves barbra should watch this video... type on a clear day timeless.. she's wearing a big dress... WOW .... that video shows the power of her voice live!
The first time I ever saw Streisand on stage at the Bon S in New York I said to myself OH GOD what an ugly woman. Then she opened her mouth and angels came out. I have been one of her biggest fans since she first started out and continue to be to this day. I love Barbra!
I can only imagine how magical it must've been to hear her songs on the radio in the 60's and 70's. She really stands out and not many people appreciate good vocalist anymore. But I know I do and if you're reading this then you must too.
she sounds great..that might as well have been her "funny girl" audition...by the way. jack paar was off that night, and orson bean was the host of the show.
Pace too slow, lapses between ballad and operatic tone, occasionally raucous, even a weird British diction creeps in now and then. Astonishing how mediocre she seems in retrospect.
@naizret This was her first television appearance. For her to be accepted by an audience at this stage of her career was crucial, and conformity was the best way to go about it. That's why her composure, diction, and even choice of song (whilst a Barbra classic) are so traditional. Her mediocrity is an imitation of the condition music was in. It was not until she achieved acceptance that her confidence would grow, and her style would deviate from the norm in a way that was so radical, so Barbra.
I love watching performances from old black-and-white TV shows. They're so interesting.
Barbra sang this song very well. I think it's even more intense than on her album. The melody is wonderful, too. I could listen to a song like this for hours and hours.
When I was a mere 20 years old and Barbra a mere 22, when I went to see Funny Girl at the Wintergarden Theater, in April of 1964, when she stepped onto the stage, I had tears running down my face.
Keeping on buzzing my darling Barbra. There is no one like you.
a beautiful recording of this song is on streisand's second album. i think it's called, "barbra streisand's second album", or something clever like that. but yes, an amazing song with music by harold arlen, lyrics by truman capote...really.
Truly amazing!! I wasn't expecting to find a video such as this, she's such a beautiful singer, I wish she had recorded the song in this matter!! Beautiful!!
This is VERY early Streisand...she's not the burnished performer she later became. Even her voice is not fully developed here...but it worked out all right.
Thanks for the pleasure of sleeping bee. It was recorded before funny girl. It shows what separates Barbra from the rest of the pack. She is a singer who acts. We feel the message and emotional background of the peice. Your video gave me the opportunity to see it live and share the passion. Thanks , Art in USA
Barbra should have recorded this with Bill Evans. His trio performed a great version of this at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in 1968. Great trio with Eddie Gomez on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums! Get the album on Verve records it's awesome!
her early recordings had excellent and strong jazz arrangements. Awesome how someone so young could have been so good. I like this early "raw' stuff. I feel it was better than the much of the later stuff. Impressive indeed! Maybe cause it was authentic and immediate.
I just love that note at 2.48

A one-of-a-kind national treasure. I hope she's found the kind of happiness she's given us all these many years. We love you, Barbra.

This was on the Jack Paar Show in early 1961 - which means Barbra was only 19 years old when she sang this song. Such breathetaking talent. Sublime !

What ever happened to her? Odd that her career never really took off...

Yeah, what a shame her career never really took off--she only sold 71 million albums, and only won 4 Emmy Awards, 9 Grammy Awards, and 2 Oscars.
