Man, you missed the main part of the story in your parallels with hesse being a non enlightened man writing about an enlightened individual. The whole point of the book is that everything is connected so enlightened or not enlightened we are all the same in the end of the beginning. You have to be an empty glass to read philosophical books and i can tell by the way you speak and talk about the book your glass is already full my man
@Siddhartha810 It's weird, because I get a small vibe of condescension in your answer there. Like you "get it" and I don't. And I don't take it personal, I don't even think you mean it. But I'd we wary of believing you know the "right" way to read philosophical books, and other people, like myself, are at a disadvantage because we didn't take the same experience out of it as you. If there's no difference between the enlightened and the unenlightened, then it really doesn't matter what it says!
I’ve read this - you have my full sympathy! It’s awful, awful, awful!
Like a battered wife, I inexplicably went back to Hesse two more times for 'Narcissus and Goldmund' (even worse) and 'Steppenwolf'.
I saw on Twitter you quoted Sartre. Got a feeling it comes from 'Nausea'. Now that’s a wonderful book for anyone looking for a good dose of philosophy. Like you mentioned in another review, I’ll never forget the silence in the room when I finished it.
@niigatablue Haha I'll keep that in mind with Hesse, I wasn't sure what his other works would be like. What's your handle on twitter, the same as this one? It's tough keeping all that straight, but yep, it was from Nausea, I just started reading it last night. Glad to hear it has the same general effect as Camus' The Stranger, I really loved that book.
And thanks for watching and everything, seriously!
@gnites88 Yeah, niigatablue on twitter too. Looking forward to your Nausea review. Will it be delivered in the style of a Parisian existentialist – sitting outside a café, espresso in hand, smoking furiously?? Steppenwolf is worth a go, by the way. Cheers.
@niigatablue Ridiculous to compare Hesse and Sartre. Awful.
Hesse is the greater novelist, and the wiser of the two. Perhaps you just have no interest in spiritual literature at all. There is no flaw in his characters because they have been lived. There is a flaw in Roquentin which I mention here: watch?v=V3SiGBImMR4
@gnites88 I attempted to. It kind of dragged on towards the middle, didn't really appeal to me at the time. Someday I will probably give it another chance.
Thanks for the review enjoyed it :) I agree it didn't blow the waters. In fairness, he described the teacher who made things seem clear, he didn't call himself the teacher. At the endish he was describing just realization and peace w/ life in Samsara. Kind of a weird Philosophical stance, but enjoyable. Personally I feel soul contact, intelligible, intellectual, brain to soul channel can be done. If done or awakened you can surf the field of knowledge or truth. Feels from the third eye
@thazzchair haha no way dude, I'm taking a break from reading all together! I've been reading a book a week since May, I'm just taking a breather. I appreciate your diligence, though. I don't know the next time I'll be taking up a "big book" challenge again like Gravity's Rainbow, but Middlesex will certainly be one of the first I turn to.
@skippingboy123 haha dude what are you talking about? I totally gave you credit for the pick in last week's video when I announced that I'd be reading it.
enlightenment is easy to find but difficult to live...

I agree. Sartre is so over the top, especially with his philosophy. Camus is a much better "existentialist." Hesse is a genius writer.

I just finished reading Demian for my fiction class and that was better than Siddhartha to me.

@FreedieFreeloader hmm I'll have to look into it. Hadn't heard of it til now.

I'm not sure why this is considered Hesse's best work honestly, I found Steppenwolf a lot more relevant, could just be my trip though.
