  • do all auto watches have the feature of winding the crown in addition to the pendulum power?

  • wait

so if in the automatic one, the pendulum thing goes back and forth, can I accidentally unwind it by making it spin in the wrong direction?

  • can you convert one to another, say a manual wind to an automatic. If its just a case of an offset weight to turn the mainspring, surely it could be possible in theory?

  • WAit wait wait wait wait wait wait

it's called a manual wind because... you have to manually wind it?

    What in the hell.....

  • @LegendaryLvl1 are u stupid? that makes sense

  • Can somebody tell me what "fully automatic" means?

  • thanks ashton kutcher

  • i've got an old elgin watch that's an auto. however, when i move, i can actually hear the rotor winding. is that normal? or does it need to be looked at?

  • This one is 18000 beats p/h. I keep the 2671 at 28800 p/h. Modern Zenith is 36000 p/h.Quartz watch are accurate watch but the battery is the chief problem. Swiss made battery is not so nice as the Japanese. Even, modern China made battery is better than Swiss made. Trust my recommendation!

  • Manual winding is best because you can control the tightness yourself without breaking the main spring

  • Awesome!!!. I had trouble with my manual wind watch, cause I am new to this kind of watches, but the little shaking you did to that one, helped me to put in work my watch. THANKS!!!!! =D

  • so which 1 is best

  • @tylercorbett09 Depends yor taste

  • @izinzelda If you're dropping watches from 50 ft, you're doing it wrong. If it's attached to your wrist at said 50ft drop, you have more to worry about than your watch. I'll take a mechanical watch any day over a quartz movement. But my G shock is there for my running and workouts. Because I just don't care about it and it will never be an heirloom piece.

  • Thanks for the information

  • Wow.. Mechanical movement is simply old school!!!!

  • also, quartz watching are so boring to look at

  • mechanical=fucking awesome

    quartz=laaaame!

  • what do you think about tissot watches? more especifically the t-touch?

  • I love vintage watches, they're far more interesting that modern quartz watches. Much better looking too, especially the ladies models. Anyone wanting to collect should know that it's possible to buy older working watches at very reasonable prices. You don't have to collect Rolex or other expensive brand though nice if you can afford these. I've been collecting for several years now and still get a thrill from buying and wearing a watch that might be over 80 years old.

  • if you forget to wind the manual wind watch does the watch lose its correct time??

  • @0hBr0therProductions It just stops, and u will have to reset the time.

  • Just stumbled across this great video and the moment he said "Stay tuned for more videos like this", I favorited it, clicked on his profile account name and only saw 1 video in the past 3 years :(

Do make more videos for future Horologists like myself

  • @pokemonpokemen dude probanly passed away years ago. Wonder what watch he was wearing when he stopped ticking.

  • great vid!

  • he thanks fore the info

  • thats an omega speedmaster... not a seamaster...

  • Super video. Will you be doing videos that talk about materials used in making watches?

  • Awesome ! Now i know :D (Mine is Quartz tho, but once i get paid THAT AUTOMATIC WILL BE MINE ! !)

  • Informative :O)

  • thank you dude

  • thanks dude

  • You forgot one ,although not so common, mechanism; the Seiko Kinetic, a combination of quartz and automatic mechanisms. Basically a weight plate which charges a battery which in turn runs the time-keeping mechanisms. Great and informational video, though, thumbs up :D

  • ohhh Seamaster!! Love this watch

  • Very informative. Thanks for the overview of watches. I've always been 'afraid' to get an automatic because I thought I'd have to wear it all the time. From you I learned I can just wear for a few minutes and it's back working

  • I have 5 Armitron battery powered watches i take very good care of

  • What happens when you counter wind with an automatic watch? (To the spring)

I had a new one and i did it and i kinda felt it slipping (the spring)

  • This was a huge help! I just bought what I thought was an automatic watch, but I can see that it is a manual wind watch, because of the non-movement of the rotar on the other side. It even says automatic on the back bezel, even though the specs say manual for the movement.

  • First of all, the pallet fork makes the ticking noise, not the resonant balance wheel. Secondly, there is no way a human being can break a watch by winding. Over winding is an utter myth, even going back to 100 year old watches, that's what they are made for. Thirdly, you said automatic watches wind themselves, yet the movement of your hand is the winding. If they wind themselves, you wouldn't have to move them around.

  • When I get enough disposable income, I will get a proper watch, not the newer quartz watches. I love how little things work together to form a complex device.

  • I'm thinking maybe magnets can one day replace the winding mechanism. In the automatic watch. So it doesn't need to be manually wined at all.

Bechause magnets are able to make things rotate, and moove things around. I saw a demonstration ábout it, but it wasn't linked to watches.

  • There are also ecodriven ones running on solarpower, that is transferred to electricity, which then charges a battery inside the watch.

  • Thank u ! 5*

  • Is the "mechanical hand wind" the same as the "manual hand wind" shown in this video?

  • @mib6667 Yes

  • @mib6667 Yes it is. Its the same thing.

  • i found a small mistake :P the omega is a speedmaster, not seamaster...

  • @djsintek the model shown in this video is indeed, as the author says, an Omega Seamaster, not Speedmaster.

    Google it!

  • Quick question,

With the Automatic watches, is it possible to "overwind" it by turning your hand TOO much?

  • @guitarMclassical NO. as i mentioned in a different comment, one cannot over wind a watch, it is impossible. unless the watch its self is previously defective, this is not possible.

  • @guitarMclassical no,there is a spring presser clutch, so once the spring gets a certain tension, the clutch engages until the certain spring presser is gone

  • @guitarMclassical no it is not possible mate!

  • @guitarMclassical

I own a Seiko kinetic and it is a self winding or "automatic" watch. This watch has a way to check how wound it is. Through normal wear (and I am on my feet walking quite often in my job) It gets up to about 60% charged. After sitting on the table during the night it drops down to low 20% again. Im not sure if you can over wind one to the point of damage but with mine, but it seems like you would have to purposefully try to wind it for several hours to do so.

  • @guitarMclassical

No, once the barrel spring is fully wound, any further rotor movement is just rotor movement, the unit will ratchet to prevent over winding. You can, however, over wind mechanical wind movements.

  • @guitarMclassical No, there is a clutch inside the watch that prevents you from overwinding an automatic. So technically, no, you can't overwind an automatic.

  • @guitarMclassical No.. I believe they use a clutch mechanism to prevent overwinding.

  • Nice job, good for a beginner! ;)

  • Thanks, I really actually learned a lot from this video. Now I know a little bit more about how each kind works, and now I can decide which I would like to buy.

  • cool video

  • that was good, needed info....

  • i have a self winding watch, why is it that it runs 5 mins from the time i set it?

  • That was very helpful I learned something thanks!

  • That's ok... The basics, but ok.

Maybe, you can now make a new video talking about diferent well known movements (ETA, Ronda, Myota, etc) as well Radio Frequence (Atomic) watches... And then, the solar watches (not solar powered;), water watches, kind experimental ones, and so on.

  • Very clear explanation. Good job.

  • Superb and informative video. Thanks for sharing it. There is now an increasing interest in automatic watches due to environmentally concerned people on the concerns of the discarded lithium batteries contributing to global pollution. Going back to mechanically wound watches that do away with battery use is becoming popular.

  • thanks now i know the difference

  • thanks man

  • thanks, finally i know the differences :)

  • ive learned something today

  • thank u !

  • Great video. You did a great job explaining things. Beautiful music at the beginning and at the end.

  • if you are going to have us looking at watch movements your video should be in HD. it is not hard to do.

  • Could you recommend a good "Automatic" style watch?

  • informative. and objective.

  • Thank you for the informative video.

  • thank you so much i have been trying to find out this infomation far quite a while know because i have just ofdered a Diamond Rolex daytona and that is a automatic and i wasnt so sure what is realy was so thanks for that video i will rat and subscribe.

  • good video

  • Speedmaster ;)

  • Thanks for this video

  • If you could go over the differences in automatic movements, from the asian movements to the best swiss movements and their pros and cons, etc, etc.

  • I have a SNX113K, ran a bit fast so I adjusted it myself. Gains only half a second per 24hrs now. That is super accurate for these watches, hope it stays that way!

  • Cool. I prefer manual wind, dunno why.. I just do lol

  • A nice video indeed, however, the idea of harming the mainspring by winding the watch is wrong, the reality is, any and all manual wind watches are built to be wound fully on a daily basis, so, just wind until the crown stops, then the mainspring is full, there is no way to overwind a watch.

Otherwise, a really nice video, well done.

  • hello . i have a watch made by the swiss company called quartz .... i dont know how to make it work please help mail me at my youtube account

  • nice video, thanks for the help

  • how does this not have more views? This is really awesome. Lemurs went back in time via bannana peels just to absorb this footage.

  • indeed

  • Favourited. That was very informational.
