yep, after 8 hours he rang for help saying he was about to hit the ocean, but couldn't tell authorities where he was... cause the dumbass couldnt work his GPS. How do you not know how to use the instrument you specifically possess for saving your own life? Sailors found his body 3 months later. Im suprised it lasted that long in the ocean O_o

He achieved the record but he's dead (found at the coast of Brazil). And i'm not sad for him. What were the chances of him surviving with such minimal uhh... Everything? Sure he had a GPS and parachute, but put a GPS on a old gags hands and see if it'll work. And a parachute, wtf is a parachute for in the middle of the sea?!?! Obviously it wouldn't work. Actually, the released some of the talk between him and the rescuers. And he was like "Jesus, hos do I use this? (the GPS)

Had him parachuted as soon as he noticed he was going to the sea direction...

Had him learned how to use the gps and given his location to the rescuers...

And if he had a functioning brain at all... He would be still alive.

It was just overconfidence. He never thought on going eastwards because he intended to go to approximately 2,700 meters and at that altitude the wind was westwards. But the balloon went up to 5,000 meters and too fast for him to correct by freeing some balloons. At 5,000 meters the wind is southeastward and then he probably started to go down too fast (because he had freeing too much balloon in the hurry to correct) and was lost in a huge area witch is hard to find.

He didn't know how to operate the GPS receiver. Again overconfidence. He thought he wouldn't really need it. He probably thought it was more like a toy and that it would sound good in the media.

He made contact by radio with the rescue team and, if he knew to operate the GPS, he would be dry and warm now and planing his next attempt.

I admire him. His dream, his courage and his initiative. But the Murphy's law can't be forgotten, specially when doing something so out of routine.

Why did he go up so much more than he should? Because he wanted to break the record (19 hours). In his last trip he had used 500 balloons and now he had 1,000. I think that he probably hesitated to start freeing balloons in the hope that he would go westwards anyway. It enlarged the possible area that he could be found.
