@j0ofez The anthem is also "das Deutschlandlied" which is the current anthem of Germany. Before 1945 it had the words "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" (Germany first) which clearly included much of Austria and Poland in Germany and is internationally known as the anthem of Nazi Germany. I hadn't realised it had also been "God Save The Emperor" for the Austrians (Franz Josef was King of Hungary)...
@gurkenhamster I see you are German and I think you are not giving credit for a fantastic performance. He has of course to do a comedy accent to make it sound like a mindless British quiz show. You couldn't achieve that by just reading off a cue card!
@evilrobottolhurst Oh no, I do give credit. I fucking love Mitchell and Webb and almost all of their sketches (although I must admit that I like "Numberwang" the least) and I know the accent should sound funny. I just wanted to reply that I don't think they speak German
@gurkenhamster If you look at this classic Python episode in German, they all had to learn the words by sound IIRC except for John Cleese - and he doesn't have the world's best accent! v=xmWN9fwmOKM

@Gellis2009 it all makes sense and i don't think he makes any majour mistakes except he does use some english words but i think they are for continuity perposes. perhaps any germans on here can tell judge the quality of his german better than I can. My knowledge of german isn't perfect but it sounds pretty good to me. not sure whether he can speak german or not but he is a well educated man so I wouldn't be surprised if he spoke a foreign language or to.
@pancakesandducks the german actually makes sense....as long as you know what goes on in "normal" numberwang that is - because most of that is gibberish...
@Gellis2009 The German is mostly good, and he probably has taken some German, because it doesn't sound coached, it just sounds like a [strong] English accent. Also, that's probably why he did it instead of Robert. I bet Robert never learned any.

Good evening and welcome to Numberwang! With me today are Julie, who is from Hamburg and Simon, who is from Frankfurt! Julie, how goes it? No Simon? Yes And now, round 1. Let us play numberwang! Simon goes first 2 That's numberwang 8 That's numberwang 43 That's numberwang, round 2, numberhösen! Come here simon and julie! Ah very good! Julie, you have 12, 30 and 8, but Simon, you have 2,389,411. Ah, thank you thank you.
sein komisches, wie ich das verstehen kann, weil ich Englisch und Deutsch so sprechen kann, wenn Sie wollen, dass ich diesen Scheiß dann übersetze, ich aber ehrlich zu sein, hat es keinen Sinn.
Well, I'm German, and I think this is pretty funny - even though there are better Numberwang episodes ;-)
And yeah, it's chock-full of rather dumb stereotypes - The Hoff really isn't some kind of national icon here. Lederhosen are only worn in Bavaria, and Bavaria is practiacally Germany's Texas. So if alle German wear Lederhosen, all Americans run around like fucking cowboys all the time ;-)
By the way, the German here is relatively good, which is kinda astounding considering it's mostly gibberish on most other anglophone TV programs. As opposed to French, which they usually get right. To wit: The Simpsons.
I guess that's why Mitchell is the host in this sketch. Does he speak German for real? Anyone?
@Killersepp ahh but this is made by english comedians, i think i can speak for the whole country when i say that i dont mind americans being called cowboy fuckers :P
@Killersepp fair point, stereotypes are often seen as being facts about particular cultures though, being scottish, the kilt wearing ginger headed racist that i am, i understand your point completely

@fizzypopism but that's not actually quite right; because Bavaria holds the heart of German culture - Richard Strauss, much of Wagner's career, Nietzche... etc. and traditional elements of culture. @bobthelittlemonkey well the way it's said "Sie ist ein Humburger," literally translates to "She is a humburger" (as in the food). If he said "Sie ist Hamburger" (missing out the ein) then it literally translates to "She is a Hamburger," (as in a person from Hamburg). So then in this case, they are actually replicating the same mistake JFK made in saying "Ich bin ein Berliner." Which is quite funny :)

I never said it was good German, but it's German nonetheless. I understood a fair bit of it.
