Oh, Ms. Marilyn...why do ppl want to box you in ONE category. Don't they know you were ALWAYS more than just a POP singer. Your versatile vocals cannot contain you in one genre. You can SANG it all!
You know, I was ready to rip into her, but I must say...it's not nearly as terrible as I wished it to be. She did a good job. It's a great song, so that helps alot. I like it though. Love the gold llame. (sp)
I am not convinced that women is any better than a wedding singer. She isn't even singing the chorus herself. Hot yes....exceptional no. American Idol is no hot shit, but I dont think she would make it past second cut. And yes Steve Perry still owns this song!
She is a beauty and has an impressive voice. I distinctly remember her singing Journey's "Who's Crying Now" on Solid Gold, and her performance on that was fantastic as well.
I'm just happy Rex Smith didn't cover this one -- I still have nightmares from seeing his version of Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger." Did she ever do any Pat Benatar songs? I think her rock vocal is pretty damn solid -- and you're right, the end, where she holds "though we touched and went our separate waaaaaaaaaays," does Perry's finish justice.
Damn, I was hoping this didn't really happen and it was all a bad memory(like the entire 1980's). Oh well, here's hoping the last 10 years of music didn't actually happen..
i don't think she does a bad job at least she keeps it close to the original not like someone who totally murdered open arms(MC) 10 years ago and put it out in the charts
Really? The ending kicks! And considering she's more pop star, ballad-oriented, Marilyn does this song some justice... or, did you care to explain your comment further?
From 1981-84, I was a huge fan of SG. I just LOVED hearing Marilyn "coo" (pun intented) out songs from the Top 10. This, I think, is her best such performance. (Also featured on the "Countdown '83" special.)
By the way, did you notice that she mis-sang the second line?
Marilyn Rocks. Her performance reminds us all that Steve Perry must have been surgically altered downstairs. How the fuck did he sing higher than a chick? Both great singers. How cool it would be to have them do this song together?
Steve Perry mixes his chest voice with his falsetto, which is what makes it sound high but powerful.
Also when a person sings or plays a note on an instrument it is not just one note that is sounding but several on the harmonic series. What gives an voice or instrument a unique sound is the structure of the instrument because while all the notes in the series are sounded the actual physical build of the instrument allows some notes in the series to be more prominent.
@cyberella Hi...there is a video with Marilyn singing "If I Could Reach You" from the SRO concert she did in the late 80s/early 90s posted on YT...just search her name and the title of the song. It is a WONDERFUL rendition...even better than the original version she did with the 5th Dimension in 1972.
I remember her performance of "Who's Crying Now", too, and as much as I love Journey's high octane version I remember being very impressed by McCoo's breezy, truncated version on the show. She's really a much better singer than she gets credit for. She has a lovely pure pop sound not unlike Karen Carpenter or Dionne Warwick. I'd love to hear 'Who's Crying Now" again.
She could sing the phone book!

Nice but Rex Smith did it better on this very show with Laura Branigan who was a much better singer.

Thanks for this... it shows that Journey can write great disco songs for beyond gifted singers while being a mediocre act. Best version ever.

She tackled this really well, it's not an easy song to sing, but she nailed it and put her own style on it.

I'm convinced that Marilyn can sing almost anything. Her voice is so versatile.
I saw her 'live in concert' in Vegas (before Solid Gold) in the mid 80's. She was wonderful.

Outstanding job by Marilyn on a GREAT Journey song. I wonder what it would sound like if Steve Perry jumped in for a duet?

Holy Crap! I never heard anyone but Steve Perry or Steve Augerri sing this. I admit I am very impressed with Marilyn's versatility.

at least she sang it live with a real band backing her and not tracks.

Steve's voice emphasizes the tonic and the octave above, which is what makes his voice good for being a front man.
