@tommiatkins almost correct in everything you said. the english never had an empire (apart from a bit of france and ireland, and bits of Scotland). Said empire was the British empire. Thankfully now all gone. And, yes, they must have been poor soldiers, or poorly led, as they outnumbered the Scots 3 - 1 and had many more heavy horses. Oh, and it was worse at Bannockburn. But never mind: we're with you in your wars now (for how long?). :-)

@tammas2000 We certainly did have an empire. Just not at that particular point in time. This is supposed to be Stirling Bridge isnt it? A battle lost by the English because they should have never tried crossing when opposed. Pfft. Opposed crossings in medieval times was suicide whoever the opponent was. So yep, badly led indeed but the battle is poorly portrayed in this blatently Anglophobic film. Glad the Scots are in the Union now. We started winning wars only when you joined :)

He acknowledges the actual battle took place on a bridge, but wouldn't really have been that exciting seeing English soliders just get picked off coming across a bridge. No, seeing both sides charge full force is much more exciting. And though people complain this movie isn't historically accurate, this film is what made me want to research what really happened. And Braveheart has turned me into a medieval history buff. So thanks Mel Gibson!
