This is bullshit. a solar array that size, at ABOSOLUTE MOST will generate 36 watts.. 24 watts would be a more realistic estimate. you can barely drive a radio controlled car at that energy level. Let alone a 15-20 KW electric motor to run a full sized vehicle. This array might trickle charge the battery, move the car about 1 mile after a month of charging, but an array that small has NO chance of running it at 42 mph. that array puts out about as much as 3 9v clock batteries. Could those do it?

My old Daihatsu had the same economy as a typical Prius and cost 70% less so I'm not convinced of the benefits of a $45,000 (NZ) Hybrid just yet.

I think my only real complaint with the Prius is that it could have been done better. Don't get me wrong, the IDEA is excellent, but the fact you can't choose to use electric all the time (for local driving) ties you to the gas pump.

Some groups have re-programmed several Prius' while adding more batteries and a power-plug to charge it at home, breaking it's tie to the gas pump. We just need Toyota to wake up & do the same. THEN the Prius will impress me!

@ LatteLiberal. Have you went? Prius' are extremely quiet compared to the large cars tailored for suburban moms rushing their kids everywhere. Most families have 3-5 people. A Prius has 5 seats. There's also enough luggage to haul an entire tv & a month's worth of groceries from CostCo. Do you really need such a huge car? Plus the prius is also reasonably quick with 0-60 of 9 which is enough for people who aren't bad drivers.

Cost prohibitive! Another unrealistic fix to the energy crisis. The cost to make a PHEV electric modification to a Prius is more than the original sticker price of the vehicle. That eliminates 99% of the general population and therefore is a "pie in the sky" fix to the high costs of energy. Unless the manufacturer comes onboard by mass producing these cars, the average person simply cannot afford one. The cost to add this solar option exceeds $25,000. Also totally unrealistic!!!
