I think the main reason so many Americans don't learn other languages is because we can travel very far and still be in America, so we aren't reminded to learn a new language. But if you travel the same distance in Europe, you would encounter many languages. That's a much better incentive to learn. It would be hard to master a new language, too, because I'd never hear it used outside of movies I rent. The easiest language to learn here would be Spanish, which is not my favorite language.

Most Americans simply don't seem to be aware of the fact that there's a world beyond their state borders. Futhermore it's also a matter of cultural incitement, which also explains the fact that, in Europe, many non-native speakers master nuances of English unknown to the average American.
