Mrs. Williams - Thank you very much for the great tutorial. I am a 37 year old man that has been working as a finish Carpenter for 20 years now. During this time I have never felt "in touch" with any of my projects. I decided to give carving a shot and I found your video here. I believe I have found a great headstart within your directions and I'm looking forward to a new, life long, hobby. Thanks again and enjoy all of your future projects.
I'm so pleased that Spirit's videos are so inspirational! We've been talking about doing a followup. Any suggestions? Spirit's clips are the most popular that I've shot. I'd like to shoot another video that creates such interest.
I bought the tools a year ago, never picked them up since because I have Arthritis and Osteoporosis in the Vertebrae, but after watching this I might just get myself motivated. Thanks for letting the world see the beauty of wood carving. We and of course yourselves in the States, have 18th Century homes that have fantastic carvings all over, Staircases and wall carvings, that is where I original got the urge to pick up some tools.
you have a good sense on the grain... very good basics... look at for some good chisels... like swiss made... and onerule is from professionals, and from artists... (it's not me) a good carver use very rare ""hammer""...
but what is important you works with the grain... what many people don't realize...
Instead of traditional C clamps, I use a method I that the NW indians used, its a single rope that is looped through my work table, two holes drilled, and tied together under the table, so U place your carving under 2 ropes, that can be moved any way U want them, then U just step on the loop below and it holds the piece in place. It works great and beats any clamp.
anyone know of an site that sells chisels? I would really like to get started carving but i have no idea where to get them, all the stores with chisels have chepos, like menards and stuff.
do a little research about chisels and which kind you would need for the task and then you would have a better idea of what ones to get. I'm waiting on a set that i've just bought on ebay. they have a selection from the cheap - to the not so cheap! lol but as i said you need to know what your looking for first.
Great video. I'm a beginner wood carver and like to do relief carvings. I often don't which tool is the right one to use. I live in Asia and Camphor wood is in abundance here. Any suggestions or comments about Camphor wood? Could you do just a video on what situation is right for the chisel, gouge, veiner etc? Thanks.

what is the wood telling you now? what are its feelings?
shadowsofnineveh 4 years ago
Anyone who works on pieces of art needs to have imagination. Otherwise all they'll ever see is a piece of wood.
Now go toss your lumber in your fireplace, you clearly have no other use for it caveman.
Qloos 4 years ago
Very well done -- that is explanation and the art! When I carve I talk to the wood -- ask her what I want and mostly I get what I wanted :)

do you ever find that while working on living and breathing wood, you come across examples of the wood in pain as you cut it?
