Jason, great review. I have yet to try this beast, but hopefully some day.
Around the 2 minute mark, you said "you just can't rush a great wheated whiskey." I thought that comment was interesting in consideration of Maker's 46. I know that you rate this Pappy much higher than the 46, but I'm just curious if you think there are any similarities. Is Maker's, in a sense, "rushing" the aging process with the seared oak staves, or are they achieving something entirely different?
@alextheyoutubulator Great question. I think in this case they are adding something to their standard entry product that just isn't there normally - more spice, more character. It really enhances Maker's flavor profile. So because it works, it is hard for me to say they rushed it, but I suppose to some they might certainly believe that to be true. Either way - it's good stuff. Cheers!
This is one that that has been elusive to me. 3 years running, and still have not been able to get a bottle. I did see a bottle of 23 yr old once, but for 300 plus, I wasnt ready to take that plunge. Thanks for the best insight, yet, on it.
New to this so curious if you are a distiller? How would recommend tasting bourbons? Straight or on rocks or mixed? Does it matter what kind of glass you have it in?
@kryptos7799 I am not a distiller, just a passionate enthusiast. I recommend tasting all bourbons and whiskeys neat without any ice. I recommend not adding water at first so you can get a sense for the whiskey as it's offered by the distillery. Then feel free to reduce the proof to a more manageble level for you to better appreciate the finer flavors and aroma. Typically you want a glass with a "tulip" shape so it concentrates the nose. I use a Glencairn glass. A white wine glass works too.
I am gonna buy it soon for my father's christmas. And I'll take a CABIN STILL for me, cause its not expensive and I heard it is a very very very good young bourbon. It will be great to make a Cabin Still review by the way ;) your opinion on it is expected.
The way you review bourbons is compelling and engaging and helpful....I've never tied this bourbon (rare as hens teeth here in Australia), but I'm trying to source one and from your review, I know it's going to be something else.
Yesterday I came home to two bottles of this on my front porch. I could not wait for my local store to call so like many, I paid more than I should! I was too tired and exhausted to enjoy this last night so I watch this review again this morning and cannot wait to crack open one of the bottles and have my Friday afternoon spiritual bourbon experience. It should be a wonderful pour!
@JWellingtonWimpy Congrats man! That's a hell of a welcome home for sure. Enjoy it, take your time with Pappy, and let it all unfold. I look forward to your thoughts.
After a few months with this I am really starting to see the value of time/age with wheated bourbons. I wondered why the Pappy tasted so spicy compared to the 7 year WL Weller's I have. I have some Weller 12 year coming this week. It will be very interesting to compare with the 7 year versions.
I will agree the Pappy is an epic bourbon and I am very thankful that I have another bottle to savor!
Excellent presentation! Just picked up a local store's last bottle of the VW Family Reserve Rye last night and hope it's every bit as good as you make their bourbon sound.
I finally acquired a bottle, but had to pay 3 times the normal price. I wish I could say I was disappointed by that fact. It was worth it. So smooth, so flavorful. It should be labeled as rare. One of the few Bourbons that actually tastes the way it smells. The complexity is beyond belief. I bought the William Larue Weller because it is said that it compares to Pappy 15. As rich and creamy as the Weller was, Pappy blew it away....then sat in a rocking chair and fired up a cigar :)
@falcon048 Enjoy! Glad you got a bottle. It's hard to really describe to people just what level this stuff is on. W.L. Weller is a fantastic product but for me it's just not Pappy 15. It's great, but just not Pappy. Thanks for the comment and congrats on nabbing one.
I'd say you're lucky yo have a bottle. Where I am from only a select few liquor stores will receive this product...and of those few, they only get a few bottles. The employees tend to take them home. In fact it released here about a week and a half ago and everyone is sold out,. :(
I'm about to open a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year later tonight for the every first time, I can hardly wait after I heard this review. I've watched your other reviews and I have to say you are always spot on.
@justinromine Man I hope you enjoy it. Great night to open a bottle of Pappy 15 - Friday after Thanksgiving and all. Thanks for the comments. I am glad you might have found them useful. Enjoy!
@jmpyle1 Wow! Dangerously good bourbon. I will definitely try the 20 year old to bring in the new year. I admit that the first sip was a little hot, but not as hot as Wild Turkey Rare Breed (one of my favorites). The only comparison to be made to Rare Breed though is the alcohol proof. But after my tastebuds adjusted it was candy! No need to add water. This whiskey is in a league of it's own.

"Mmm mmm mmm...." That's the same sound I make when I drink my Pappy 23yr.

I was nervous you were going to knock the bottle over waving your hands around. That would have been a tragedy.

@miket163 I actually acquired a bottle of this and I have to agree. Whereas it's not Bourbon, it would be interesting if Jason could review it :)
