I AGREE WITH U ON THE TOPSY ONES U BUY,MINE DID THE SAME THING,IT RIPPED UP SO BAD,I ONLY GOT TO USE IT ONE SEASON,I HAD MINE GAVE TO ME,THANK GOODNESS I DIDNT BUY IT,IM GOING TO MAKE MY OWN FROM NOW ON,LOVE YOUR IDEA,THINK ILL DO THIS FROM NOW ON!
My opinion only - I think you can still put most any veggie in, as long as they go in this week. Figure that most of them have a 75 day growing period. And if you pick up a few pre-started plants from Lowes or Home Depot you can speed up the process. I'm not sure what the first average frost date is where you're at - but most stuff can still go in on June 1st for a mid to late August harvest.
I'm gardening for the first time on my own this year. I'm 23, and I live in Colorado, so I've been a bit unsure as to what grows well here, and what I should or should not be planting. I know generally after Memorial day we're good for no frosts, but the problem in Colorado is the short growing season.
I refuse to use any other tomatoes but Early Girl because of the August/September frosts we have. Any other tips?
Actually, let me give you a full run down. I'm doing Blue Lake Pole beans, one Jalepeno, a bunch of Early girl tomatoes, and some yellow squash. All of them are growing pretty well.
In addition, I've got Spearmint, Dill, Cilantro/Coriander, Basil, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme. The Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme I started from plants, and they're growing really well.
The other herbs are also growing extremely well. I used to have a Sage plant in my yard when I was younger, and it was great year after year until my sister sprayed it with weed killer because she didn't know it was an herb. :(
I recognize it's the first week of June, but are there any other veggies I could plant and still get a decent harvest at this point in Colorado?
What a great idea, the golf ball baskets! I would have never thought of those. We used 4 gallon white buckets that we got from Dunkin Donuts. That was my idea. Free is good and they don't look that bad. My husband also hung a long rod along our fence to hang them from so they were hung about 6 feet off the ground. You can see it in my vids. Thanks for the info, keep up the good work. Noreen
Thank You Noreen ... Love the buckets from Dunkin Donuts (tell 'em to give you a dozen free for the publicity). Be sure to check out my second video that we just posted this last weekend.
Hey wanted to see when the next video is coming along. I see your comments said you planted some things last week. I'm definitely looking forward to it.
Hi Tads ... Yep. We're actually (finally) putting plants int this weekend, so I hope to have one up here on the channel on Sunday or Monday. Thanks for asking !!!
We've got ours in rightside up pots now until after Memorial day. Doing a week long camping trip and I want to be able to move all plants into the garage. There is no where to hang them! But I'm going to invert a coke bottle for a weeks worth of water! I hope that works.
Looks nice, your wife can be proud, but just a question. You spent $16 each for the baskets and a shepherds hook can run from 10 to 20. I guess its a good long term investment but for the first year or two isn't that awfully expensive? I use two and three liter coke bottles and hang them from my porch, Of course I'm not real concerned about looks. I just want to grow food.
True. I'm not saying its a bad idea, if you have the money. But I don't, and I consider coke bottles free, because we drank the coke, or sprite or whatever, and they don't biodegrade, so they will last years too. And we are keeping them out of landfills by using them. Hey, I'm sorry he wasted his money on the Topsey-Turvey last year. And, I'm glad he made the video. No one else that I've seen has posted a video showing how the TT deteriorates.
Bookhound ... You're absolutely right. I'm lucky, I've got the cash available to outlay this year. Not everyone has that. I'm hoping (???) that these will last for many years to come. I've heard of using the two and three liter bottles, but never seen it done. Would love to see a video or pictures, if you get a chance. We're actually working on posting a new video this weekend that shows the garden and planters actually getting plants put in and started.
I made a "how to" video on planting a pepper plant in a two liter bottle. Its on my channel. There is also an update that I did this week, with some tips and hints.
Y u might want to put some plastic on the sides of the container to keep the soil from drying out to much during the day. I have used the 5gal buckets and my wife feels the sameway about the looks of them. Great Vid show us more!!
Let the challenge begin!!! Haha :). Thanks for posting the video. Looks like you guys put a lot of thought into this. You have a great setup. The golf ball baskets are a cool idea. I'm looking forward to seeing how your veggies grow. Sucks you have to wait a few more weeks to plant. I'm jealous of all the FL folks who can almost grow year round. I'll definitely be keeping up with your series. Catch you later.
Thanks. Let the "Garden Off" begin. You folks down south have an advantage, in that you can start stuff so much earlier. It's suppose to get down near freezing here tonight. Keep us all posted on how your garden is going. I'll post my next video in a couple of weeks. Good Luck !!!
Nice garden. Very resourceful.

I lead to believe tomatoes like French marigolds in with them to kill white fly and aparently it increases yield too.

His investment is long term, as you say.
Those baskets, unlike plastic hanging pots, will last for YEARS! As will the shepherds hooks. Mine were 4.00 from Flower Factory.

I got the five gallon buckets for 4.00 at home depot. I picked up contact paper for 2.00. They don't look bad.
But I LOVE your idea. they are great.
I did right side up strawberries yesterday and will do the tomatoes today. Can I do Basil or chives on the top.
