Back in those days there was an incredible taboo on homosexuality, and a lot of people were afraid to admit they were gay and therefor hid it by getting engaged and married. That happens even these days and that's what this movie is about: the struggle with homosexuality.
i have watched it a couple of times and i still dont get the ending message.when Ennis says something like "i swear...", then he closes the closet door with the bloodied shirt that "jake" cherished . what does he mean? i totally get the love story and enjoyed the movie,just not the ending comment. is it that he finally recognizes that he should have excepted the love that he felt for this man, regrets that he will never get that chance and now he misses the greatest love of his life?
He say's "Jack, I swear . . . " I think it's also symbolic that Jack's shirt is now incased in Ennis', instead of the other way around. In the screenplay for BBM, it said this: "Jack, I swear --" He said though Jack had never asked him to swear anything and was himself the swearing kind. Hope that can give some clarity, this is a beautiful vid set to an equally beautiful movie, thank you so much theartifact!

I totally agree. I always read the punching scene in the same way as you. Ennis is upset, inside him their feelings are wrestling against everything he knew before meeting Jack. And I think this opposition is well represented in the song by the opposition between two verses: "ever felt away with me" vs. "ever felt away without me"...

He say's "Jack, I swear . . . " I think it's also symbolic that Jack's shirt is now incased in Ennis', instead of the other way around. In the screenplay for BBM, it said this: "Jack, I swear --" He said though Jack had never asked him to swear anything and was himself the swearing kind. ermmm sorry this will be a repeated statement for any one who has looked at other brokeback vids but im spreading my message. i used to think that this film was only for gays and women but im neither and i thouroughly enjoyed this film although it was really sad andfull of tragerdie :( but any straight guys out ther give it ago u might like it i did

To me it was very strange to hear about his death. I don't know why...Is it because it's so soon in age? Or because he was a great actor? I think both... I loved him in Brokeback mountain he put his role so strongly that people started to share opinions about homosexuality.

Because Ennis is upset, he does not know how to react. He has fallen in love with a man, and gets upset because it is against everything his parents has taught him. And now he and Jake are going their separate ways, and he may never se Jake again.

I totally agree. I always read the punching scene in the same way as you. Ennis is upset, inside him their feelings are wrestling against everything he knew before meeting Jack. And I think this opposition is well represented in the song by the opposition between two verses: "ever felt away with me" vs. "ever felt away without me"...

Brokeback Mountain was a great flick, showed both the decency of good people and the rigid intolerance of others...How could the latter mock the New Testament so?
