Nice vid... But why not you just change the whole engine Head Cylinder to a AE92 Small port... plus you can do top overhaul while doing progress along the way. ;)
Well that's my point of view... anyway nice job there. Peace
@SequenceRRD Is simple actually Just get an AE92 Small port head with the Intake Manifold. Because 4A-GE engines parts are interchangeable meaning you can get an AE86, AE92 block and fit in an AE101 or AE111 20V without a sweat. but still with such mod you just need to change the Piston to AE111 20V piston just to give way for the 5 valve setup. That is only needed if you're going for 20V. But with just the 16V there's nothing to worry about. Just disassemble and reassemble. :)
mcm95403 would it be possablie for you to make a vid of your car and show us the difference with the 2 different manifolds? and document the results? thatd be awesome.
I don't think its a bad thing that the big manifold has a narrow middle .. it will cause the air to speed up, and cool off a bit, but it might lose a bit of pressure..
@00Mass00 Higher velocity does NOT cause cooling. If you cut one of those intake open, you'll see just how narrow it is inside. It's so narrow that the tip of my pinky finger barely fits in the middle of the port - and that's the widest spot in there.
@00Mass00 You can't polish away a design flaw this big, that's why they corrected it in the next generation with the better intake. Remember that the original intake was designed almost 30 years ago - a lot changed between then and 1990 when the revised engie came out.
@mcm95403 thats true,, sorry I didn't mean to polish to get a bigger diameter but I meant polishing for a better flow, some people say it significantly improves the gas response.
those flappers are designed to give you more torque at lower RPMs(closed) and that's why the skinny long runners. its called a variable length intake manifold by other companies for those that don't know . when the car is at full throttle it opens allowing more air inside the piston chambers giving more power. it opens progressively though(+1800 rpm IIRC). its not fully closed or fully open operated
BTW I'd do the mod if there was enough space to do it.
@coquivagabundo-- T-Vis is an open/close operation. The vacuum that controls the T-Vis is ran through a VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) that opens the plates at around 4250rpm. The VSV is Ecu controlled.
1. port match the 4 runners manifold(4RM) to the gasket.
2. attach the piece with the flappers to the 4RM (ported and matched) and let it operate stock. I can see its vacuum operated but Im sure that there is a variable solenoid controlling the vacuum somewhere.
3. install an A/F gauge or an Exhaust Gas Temp sensor.
IF the car runs lean
4. Try an adjustable fuel pressure regulator,
or I'd remap the ECU.
man this is making me want to get a Toyota my right foot is itching.. lol
I didn't have the time to do that, maybe one day in the future. Also, keep in mind that the TVIS runners are about 3 1/2" longer than the small port runners, so total volume alone doesn't mean that much. The shape is much more important.
Why not just waterjet cut the intake and TB plates in say 3/8" or 1/2" steel and make your own intake on a Jig with a tube bender?? - Scan and mic-out the gaskets.. Build the thing all in tubing then have it powdercoated..
in terms of performance are the differences very noticeable ? i have a 4age with tvis since it's stock and i was aiming just a litle bit for more performance and this could be a possible mod althought i have no idea where to get a intake manifold of the non-tvis version like you showed in your modified intake manifold !
The non-tvis small port intake was used on 90-91 Corolla GTS FWD cars, and also the 4AGE powered Geo Prizm GSI. also, see my reply to the previous post.
hey nice vid, i have a bluetop aw11. i was just wondering if u used the smallport intake on the bigport. and was is faster? and what do u need to do to the computer or tvis sensor?
Extremely helpful thank you!

Nice work mate you reassured me on this I intend to do this conversion soon, You also saved yourself 99 quid for a adapter plate Good stuf

@gtrskyline Can you give me information on doing the change to an AE92? If you have time, much obliged! Thanks.

@12345tou I sold the car and replaced it with a Corvette in July of 2010.

@mcm95403 ohh okay,, I don't understand why the designers didn't think of making it bigger .. maybe to increase sustainability.
does it help to polish the inside of the manifold?
you might have noticed I'm not an expert if it comes to engines but I sure am interested!

Good stuff Marc. After really reading up on it, I should have bought a small port head and intake when I did my engine build for my '86.

thanks for the video, very informative. I'm in the middle of a 4AGE rebuild.

@coquivagabundo On these cars it stays closed below 4250 RPM, then goes full open - not progressive at all.

I'd
1. port match the 4 runners manifold(4RM) to the gasket.
2. attach the piece with the flappers to the 4RM (ported and matched) and let it operate stock. I can see its vacuum operated but Im sure that there is a variable solenoid controlling the vacuum somewhere.

You should have CC the runner volume, instead of saying FINGER sized.
