  • at 2:19, the video jumps ahead. Right before that, you say to go ahead and do the next "set." How many in that set? I'm a beginner so I have to know exactly. I can't infer LOL

  • do have a pattern using a single stitch and a double stitch in the same row of a pattern

  • it just seems really really fast and there is some hidden looping and, i guess crocheting behind the work out of the cameras view. is there anyway you can slow it down. because i can tell your really good and i would love to learn

  • @tommythedream I will send you a new version of this same video.

  • can someone give me a pattern for that round solid granny square bag plz??

  • I'm sorry but I can't get no farther than the first part where you say double crochet three because after I get so far I can't figure out how to make it come back around to make another corner then to go on to the next row? Am I missing something? You skip right into the other rows then you are finished. I'm confused.

  • @CrissyC2003 I will send you a different tutorial with more details.

  • wow this is very beautiful. i hope i can get to do this and learn as much as you do. great job!!

  • When you want to change color, cut the yarn and pull it through the stitch. That alone will secure it. I wait to do additional knot until completion just on the chance that I need to rip. Then I slip stitch the new color in the space or stitch.

  • no................. still dont get it and I do loads of crafts and knitting - ill just never get it!!!!

  • @creepmag62 yeah, me either, I find it cuts out just when I need it :-(

but it is beautiful, but Im a beginner... I can make the normal granny squares, really want to make some like this :-)

  • Wow, you've made this look so easy! I have just one question...how do you join this square with others to create an afghan? I would really like to try and make one with granny squares. Thanks

  • I will send you a link.

  • @Blakperlz6 can you make it slower pls

  • @qwert1234378 I just made a new version of the granny square and posted the other day. I will send you the video.

  • May I please add that this granny square is not your "basic" granny square. Your demo is more of a closed granny square which; I feel; is more beautiful and makes a warmer afghan. :)

  • This is a solid granny square. You must be talking about the traditional granny square.

  • Pardon me for the mistake. Seems I read the title as just "crochet granny square" when I viewed this. Please accept my apology. You've been crocheting for 26 years? You must have started young. :) I did as well. I've been crocheting for about 43 years. :)

  • how long have you been doing this? =o

  • I have been crocheting for 26 years.

  • Thank you so much for getting back to me. I have a new question now and it may sound stupid can you crochet a whole afghan from one granny square? I am new to this and want to learn new stitches to crochet afghans. The way you slow down and take your time to show the newcomers is so great! Thanks again

  • You are welcome. You would continue to make the granny square as large as you want make it. I recently posted the traditional granny square with 5 rounds. You keep making it larger the same way that you did with the previous rounds..

  • Hi, your videos have helped me so much. Thank you. I have one issue you may be able to help me with. Whenever I do any projects that start from the center (like a granny square, round dish cloth or doily) by about the 5 or 6th row the square starts buckling and doesn't lay flat and the more rows I crochet, the worse it gets. Is my tension too tight? Do you have any suggestions that might solve this issue for me? Thanks again

  • There are two things that I will suggest. You can add more chains to your corner or more stitches. The pulling is an indication that there are not enough stitches to go around. Even if it is a pattern that you purchased, you may need to improvise according to your unique crochet style.

  • I love your videos they are so detailed. But my question everytime i get to the beginning stitch corner do I have to do the slip stitch? To finish the square can't i just double crotchet chain two double chrochet in every corner. I am not getting that slip stitch good it starts looking really weird

  • The slip stitch is to join the square and make it even on each round. If you keep going, you will have a distortion of your square and it will not look right.

  • i love your videos! my Aunt Shelly taught me how to DOUBLE CROCHET but i never learned how to SINGLE CROCHET or to TRIPLE CROCHET but when i saw your tutorials, i caught on so easily! i love also how u did the solid heart! when i see the video, it look so easy i cant wait to get started! thanks so much for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • you make it look sooo easy. happy new year.

  • Thank you. Happy New Year to you too. :)

  • Thank you for taking the time to do these little videos. My mother-in-law (78 yrs old) just gave me a beautiful unfinished wool granny square quilt that she started 35+ years ago. I said I would love to finish it but I have never mastered the granny square! It looks so easy but for some reason I lose count every time I get to the 3rd or 4th round. (could it be my two little sons distracting me?!). These videos really help to make sense of the basic concept of how it works.

  • You are welcome. :) Happy New Year!!

  • I cannot for the life of me do this. I have probably watched every how to video on granny squares on youtube. I always end up with some wreath looking thing. =-[

  • It sounds to me as though you may be missing the corner increases. With any type of square, there is going to be an increase at the corner that will include additional stitches and chains. I have this square and the standard granny square in the form of symbol instructions. It may help you to understand the stitch placement and recognize what you may be doing different.

  • First let me say I love your videos.

Ive got a really silly question.

to make a quote "standard sized " grannie square. How big would that be and what size

    hook would I use?

  • You can make the granny pattern any size that you want to. I have come across patterns for 6, 7 and 12 inches squares. I have used a size G, H, or I size hook for the squares. I will send you the link to the traditional granny pattern.

  • I have watched this video at least 10 times. Everytime it turns out round not square. I feel so stupid, I just can't get it. You had another video for part 1 and then you changed it. I think the first part 1 was easier to follow. I really appreciate you trying to help.

  • When you start the granny square it does have a little bit of a round shape in the very beginning. You should not feel stupid. You will get it as long as you keep practicing. I had to practice for a long time when I was first learning and I had crooked stitches and uneven edges.

I have several granny square videos. I will send you my crochet blog with granny squares. It will be easier to find the video's from the blog.

  • hi

i am a beginner for crochet..but can u pls tell me how to make some easy and nice pattern poncho thru some videos....

  • If that is a project that I am able to come up with then I will share it.

  • Thank you for all your help. You are really a sweet person to put this out there for us. I'm still trying to figure out where I'm supposed to put the dc-in the top under or in the middle of the the other dc's? thanks!

  • I'm sorry for taking so long. I thought I answered all of my questions. You put the the hook under the two loops at the top of the stitch. I do have a slow motion video tutorial focused on only the double crochet. It might be helpful.

  • Great video. Thanks for doing this! Looking forward to learning more about crocheting from you.

  • Thank you. I appreciate your comments and feedback.

  • Great video and easy to understand - thank you!

  • You are welcome. Feel free to ask questions any time.

  • This is a great vid - thanks for posting. But I am still having trouble starting the square off! My Grandma taught me how to do granny sqaure balnkets in the last 2 1/2 years and i can do the main bit and the edge but always have had trouble staring it off and before my grandma got really sick and died she would always do the starts for me and Ive tried many times but can not get it to work for me - are you able to help me at all?

    Thanks so much,

    Michelle

  • What do you need help with? I have the basic granny square posted in slow motion if that is what you are looking for. I also have a plain chain video tutorial if you need to learn how to do the chain.

  • i love the video but i did not get the sound i know u chain 5 slst through first hole but how many in the round? i was told 20 and shapeing like a square im @ a total lost

  • The written instructions are posted on my crochet blog if they would be helpful in following along. The link is to the right of the video.

  • AAAAHHHH confusing! so you put the hook through the center hole and pull the string through? (Just Learning)

  • That is what you do. It will seem confusing. Keep practicing and it will make sense. Ask questions anytime.

  • I think, it is great that you posted this video I always wanted to learn crochet you have made the beginning possible for me.

    THANKS AGAIN!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • It went kind of fast :( But otherwise, it was a really good viceo!

  • I do have a slow motion of this video. In addition there is a pause button and you can move the slider backwards.

  • HI, OK I am following the directions ,but my square is not square enough. It's like a round kinda square if you know qhat I mean. Can you tell me what I'm skipping?

  • Have you looked at the symbol tutorial that I have posted on my crochet blog for this square? It is hard for me to say what is happening without seeing an image of your square. You could be crocheting to tight in some places or missing increases.

  • I can't see how you did your first stitch you're finger is in the way ;; .

  • I have several more granny tutorials posted. You will even find two slow motion of the basic granny square and solid granny square.

  • yep I watched both... very helpful. thx^^

  • are you going to do a video for a traditional granny squeare? what is the differnce between traditional and solid?

  • I have three tutorials of the traditional granny square. The solid square is solid stitches across the square. The traditional granny is worked in groups of stitches with spaces between each group creating open spaces or holes in the square.

  • hi! First of all thanks for the great videos, i love watching them, and I've learned crocheting from it. I was wondering, I'm making a blanket with this pattern but I don't want a square, I want to make a rectangle shape, is that possible? And how do I do that?

  • I'm not using the solid pattern though, I'm just repeating the 3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet etc

  • You are welcome. Yes it is possible both the solid and the traditional granny. I will work up a tutorial.

  • thanks!

  • So is this the same as the "solid granny square"?

Thanks, I really appreciate this video!

  • It is the solid granny square. I have a couple different videos of the same square.

  • Great tutorial...trying to teach myself and texts/pictures can only go so far. Your videos are so helpful, especially because I can slow them down or pause to review a specific movement. You do such a wonderful job. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

  • Thank you for writing and watching my crochet channel. I am very happy that so many people are interested in crochet and learning from my tutorials. Write any time if you need help.

  • yeah! you taught me how to crochet!!!!!thank you!!!!

  • You are welcome.

  • can you keep gonig with this stitch to make a queen size blanket?

  • I have seen afghans made out of large squares.

  • ok thanks

  • I've actually made lots of nice baby blankets with this granny square..I just kind of keep on going with it, and they have turned out so nice, so thanks for your great videos! I wouldn't be nearly as advanced with my crochet if it weren't for you! Bless your heart... <3

  • Thank you. :)

  • What, from your perspective is wrong with it?

  • ok, i don't mean wrong i mean WAY WAY different from what i learned.

  • There is the basic granny square and a solid granny square. Then there are hundreds of variations. This is the solid square. I have the traditional granny square posted too.

  • ah so this is very similar to the crochet butterfly you were demonstrating in the other video. Very cool.

  • Yes it is similar. You can use this basic idea with the basic granny or solid square and keep adding corners on your starting foundation. Let's say you want a 7 sided motif. You just keep adding your sets of 3 with the chain inbetween, to the beginning foundation.

  • Aww!

That was a cute granny square!! Can you put a video on YouTube that shows how to crochet a bun thing that's yellow and orange?

  • I was wondering.. isn't there a different patterns to make a granny square? the basic and the solid granny squares are the same right? Do you have another demonstration video to make a different granny square pattern? thank you!

  • The basic granny square are solid are two different squares. The traditional granny square has the open meshy holes in it. The solid square is all filled in. I have about four different tutorials that stray away from the traditional square. "Loopy Granny", "Circle to Square", "Star Stitch" "Seed Stitch Flower Granny" Any of the pattern stitches deomonstrated can be turned in to squares too. If you want to private message me with an e-mail address, I can send you live links.

  • Im having trouble with making the very first cluster stitch. Do you pick up the stiches on the back of the loop or on the chain you just made

  • never mind i asked my mom what you were doing and i get it now thanx

  • Would it be possible for you to show the pattern instructions as you crochet (in slow motion) for those of us who are beginners? This would help us follow along and also understand what the pattern is asking for as we watch you do it. Your thoughts? Thanks again!!!

  • I have done that with some of the recent demonstrations.

  • I love watching your videos and do find them helpful, however I am finding it difficult to follow a pattern and know exactly what stitch to put the hook into, etc. I know how to crochet the stitch (I pretty much understand the abbreviations, sc, dc,ch) but my problem is knowing where to place it... for example one of my patterns indicates the following:

RND 1 (RS) Ch 4, (dc, ch1) 7 times in ring, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-8ch-1 sp. Does 1 sp mean to skip a space? or chain? Please help

  • You don't skip anything. In the end you will have 8-double crochet, chain 1, all together to form your ring.

  • i still cant make a granny square =[ im kinda a beginner, but i know how to make scarfs, so since i cant make a granny square what other easier project do you think i should start, im tried of making scarfs now lol

  • I have another video demonstration, that is a slow motion granny square just like this demonstration. You might like that one better. It is done in two parts.

  • Thank you so much!!!! My Granny tried to teach me how to make granny squares, she showed me, I forgot how & then came across this video! Thank you again! I'll probably looking up your video how to connect them next...once I get a bunch done :0)

  • Watching this helped a lot! I will probably have to watch it about 10 more times though!

    Thank you so much!

  • Written instructions for this project are provided on my crochet blog in the video details to the right of this video.

There is another version of the square posted as a video response to this video. It is the one with the red yarn.

  • Never mind! Found it in the video response! Thanks again, you are a great teacher!

  • You are welcome.

  • Thanks so much for all your vids, I usually find them easy to follow (beginner here). Having trouble with this one, is there any where the whole pattern is written? Or could you add it to the info? Thanks!

  • I recently began crocheting again after a 20 year break, and could not remember how to do the granny square. Your video was very helpful and I saw right away what I was missing! Thanks!!

  • I'm just wondering, how long have you been crocheting?

  • For over 25 years. I did a little when I was a kid but didn't pick it up full speed until I was a young adult.

  • Very nice and easy instructions.. I will refer back to your videos if I need help! (I'm a beginner) Great video!

  • Great vid.

  • thank you ,,I was looking for such a video ,,it is very easy to follow and very well done :)

  • Thank you. I have several other granny square demonstrations along with many crochet tutorials.

  • thanks very much 4uploading. i luv to learn to crochet @home.

  • You are welcome.

  • how do you crochet so fast

  • I have had 25+ years of practice. In addition to that, I think it has to do with how I choose to hold my hook and work.

  • i think the guy below me means, when you finally sow the end in at 5:12, how did you get the wool onto the needle, with all the little strands and all, i was kinda wondering that too. And man really want some that wool u have it looks so easy to work with

  • Thanks, I changed my answer. I am just using 4-Ply acrylic.

  • how did u get the yarn on the needle

  • It just went through. Just squeeze it a bit. I use a big enough needle with a large eye.

  • It is a veruy good thing that you are doing. I really really like it you are awsome.

  • Thank you for watching.

  • I am just learning to crochet and I'm excited about trying this one! Thanks for the demo!

  • Thank you sooo much for this!! My Gramdma taught me to do this when i was about 6 and I stoped doing it. I forgot how to do it and wanted to teach my dd. Thank you again sooo much!!

  • You are welcome.

  • hi i have 1 question. 1 is do we have to do that double crochet stitch thing?

  • You can make a granny square out of what ever stitch you want to.

  • thank you this helped

  • Thanks for letting me know about this. I sought them out and now I understand now how to make that connection.

How very generous of you to take such care in assuring we understand. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent.

  • wow. magical fingers.

  • This is excellent; however, I am not sure what you did to join the clusters into a circle. The video stops and the picture twirls and suddenly it is done. I do not understand the terminology so I feel a little lost. If you do another, can you demonstrate this vital step all the way through? Your demonstration is outstanding otherwise. (*smile*)

  • I just started to crochet. Thanks for your videos!

  • when i do it, it looks nothing like yours; mine looks like crap. you must have a gift to make it look that awesome.

  • I have been doing it for 25+ years. You should have seen what some of my stuff looked like when I first started. I would rip it apart and start all over. I would reuse the yarn so many times it start to look crappy and not work right. I wound up throwing the yarn away and would get some new yarn to practice with.

  • hi i was wondering do you know how to make a baby hat or bonnet i have been trying to learn but no luck yet,I love your video i just finished my first granny square blanket. Please help if you can thanks

  • yay its back

  • The video started out very heipful then you were left to figure it out on your own, so I was very lost. I would Love to see all the steps. I Love your granny sqaure and would like to know how to complete it!

  • You make it look very easy. I hope it's that easy when I try it!

  • Thank you so much for the video. Will you be teaching how to crochet baby hat? I really want to make one for my baby. Thanks.

  • I posted a question to you on another video you did and already answered for me. Thank you so much for these videos. They are the best.

  • I have attempted this so many times, but each time it just turns into a big bunch of thread. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

  • Are you new to crocheting or do you have a basic understanding of how to crochet?

  • I have been crocheting just very simple stuff for almost a month now I guess. I really like it. I wanted to move on to something new and I heard that Granny Squares were good for beginners. I have watched and it really looks like I am doing everything right, but I end up with a very different result than you.

  • ok, so when I make this as a big huge blanket, the corners kind of scrunch together so that there is a wave in each corner starting from the middle and going to the outside... make sense? if so... how would i go about correcting that in the next blanket like this that i make?

  • Do you mean there is to much fullness in the corners so it bunches up?

  • yes!! exactly.

  • How can you prevent this?

  • By not increasing in the corners at much. Don't do the shell of 3DC ch2 3DC in every round. You will have to improvise and experiment. When you have instructions that tell you one thing and that doesn't work, improvise.

  • thanx! =]

  • What kind of yarn do you use mostly and on this square?

  • 4-ply

  • Acrylic or wool or what fiber do you use?

  • I have a lot of 100% Acrylic by Red Heart right now but I use a lot of scraps and balls that have been given to me. I like the firmer acrylic yarn for granny squares. I believe the green is acrylic. It was something my mom gave me in a bunch of balls with no labels on it.

  • Yeah... about the only yarn I use is Red Heart acrylic... I use some Caron... but not the simply soft though, it's too flimsy for me. Have you had a chance to use those crochet hooks by Clover that have the weird handle on them? They are kind of nice. =]

  • Are you talking about the ones with the wooden handle? I have not used anything new other than big plastic hooks for my hats. Most of my crochet hooks are probably 15 years or older. Unless I loose a hook, I don't change them.

  • No, the ones that have the nice plastic/rubber handle made by Clover.

  • I have not seen those. I find that I do adapt to differnt hooks if I have to. I would have to see what the crochet hook end looks like. My favorite hook end is by Boye. It is rounder. Some hooks have a flatter hook that I am not fond of.

  • You would like these... they are rounded just like the Boye hooks and the thread slides over them very easily... =]

  • Have you ever made a giant square afghan out of this?

  • I have some 12" squares which are the largest that I have done. I have seen afgans made giant like you are talking, about so it is possible to do. The only thing would be it being square so you might need to improvise a bit if you want it longer and continue the pattern stitch on two ends to make it rectangle.

  • These videos are fabulous and I want to say thank you for this website. They make it so easy to do granny squares.

  • You are welcome. I enjoy making the video's and crocheting.

  • What website? Do you have one!?!

  • The website here on youtube. Click on the tjw1963 and you will see all the video's that I have made.

  • Oh! :)

  • I liked this pattern... but I added a row or 2 so it would come out 8 inches rather than 7 inches. All of the squares I am crocheting are 8 inches. Thanx for this post... and all of your posts actually!

  • You are welcome. The fun with granny squares is that you can improvise and do anything with them and make them any size. Some of the squares that I have made, are one time squares since I didn't have a pattern and didn't write down what I was doing. I don't like to write patterns.

  • Thank you sooo much. My aunt taught me how to do this, but I couldn't catch on. But, since I can watch this over and over, I can make sure I do it right! Thanx again sooo much!

  • I'm trying to make an afgan out of dat.

  • Crocheting-Granny Square

  • Thank You! I love watching people work. :)

  • Thank you so much for making these crochet videos. You have really cleared things up for me( I just started learning to crochet after knitting for 2+ years) I hope that you keep making the videos!

  • Thank you so much for posting these videos. I've known single and double crochet for a while, but never learnt granny squares -- but I always wanted to. I'm housebound so can't go out to ask for help, and allergic to books so can't use those. Online drawing are confusing. Thank you for your help. I've now made 2 granny squares.

  • very helpful granny square demos. Am a crochet newbie. Hoping you continue the series and show how to attach them all to one another.

  • This granny square is kicking my butt, even with the video right in front of me.

  • This was very informative. I've been crocheting for awhile but need to work on finishing techniques and am a visual person. Do you think you might do a video that shows doing a granny square but with multiple colors and showing how to add the new yarn so it looks like it was one continuous piece of yarn? Thanks.

  • thank you for making this video! i hope you make a tutorial on crocheting hats next time =)

  • thank u so much for this still havnt d hang of it but live in hope!tanx again.
